The objective of this work is to analyse homemade cosmetics based on a study of blogs and their authors. We made a study of 150 blogs advocating homemade cosmetics. With only one exception, the blog authors were women, mostly in their thirties, with no specific qualifications or knowledge in the fields of cosmetic formulation or chemistry. The most highly qualified of them (with at least a Master's degree) had studied marketing and management. So, the situation is an illustration of the Dunning-Kruger effect, with authors believing themselves to be qualified in a field wholly outside their own. This leads to scientific falsehoods about, for example, preservatives like parabens and phenoxyethanol. On the contrary, the relevance of the ecological motivation frequently mentioned in these blogs is undeniable. Note de contenu : Blog author profiles

Tests de toxicitéIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : - Objective : To evaluate the safety and the synergistic effects of tea tree, lavender, eucalyptus and tangerine essential oils in combination on the skin using in vitro, ex vivo and clinical studies.
- Methods : The phototoxicity was predicted using 3T3 neutral red uptake phototoxicity test (OECD TG 432). Skin penetration was evaluated by confocal Raman microspectroscopy using direct application of essential oils to pig ears. For the clinical studies, 40 participants were enrolled and randomized in three groups: (1) lavender, eucalyptus and tangerine, (2) the same essential oils plus melaleuca and (3) placebo group. The skin was evaluated by noninvasive techniques before and after a 90-day period of topical use.
- Results : The essential oils were non-phototoxic, but the tangerine oil showed dose-dependent cytotoxicity (IC50: 33.1 µg/ml), presenting 35% of penetration in the viable epidermis. On the contrary, 17.7 µg/ml in combination was applied per day in the clinical study and the penetration rate for the combinations (10%, 1.77 µg/ml achieving the viable epidermis) guaranteed the safety, since in the clinical study, the application of the four essential oils improved skin barrier and morphologic skin characteristics, as well as increased skin hydration and decreased sebum levels, with no unwanted effects reported.
- Conclusions : All essential oils studied were considered non-cytotoxic or non-phototoxic separately except tangerine, which present a dose-dependent cytotoxicity. Finally, the essential oils in combination in an appropriate amount were safe and effective in the improvement of the hydrolipidic balance and morphological properties of the skin.Note de contenu : - MATERIAL AND METHODS : Developed formulations - Photoxicity evaluation - Confocal raman microspectroscopy - Clinical study - Stratum corneum water content - Transepidermal water loss - Sebum content of the skin surface - Amount of sebum in the infundibulum - Reflectance confocal microscopy - Statistical analysis

Tension superficielleIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : Aroma molecules (fragrances) are indispensable components of many cosmetic and wellness products. This work demonstrates the possibility of quantitative determination of aroma molecules in carrier salts (flavored salts for bath-wellness and as components of detergent compositions) based on the surface activity of aroma molecules. The aqueous solutions of three differently coloured carrier salts with different loaded fragrance composition have been studied using dynamic tensiometry (maximum bubble pressure). The fraction of the carrier (coarse/fine) and the amount of the dissolved flavoured salts have been varied. Also, the effect of the artificial aging on the amount of the loaded aroma molecules has been revealed. The demonstrated approach can be used for the optimizations of compositions and of the manufacturing
processes of fragrances-containing products, as well as for the assessment of the release/evaporation of fragrances from
the products.
Further development of the proposed approach will make it possible to evaluate the molecular interactions of aroma substances with other components of detergents and of cosmetic formulations, such as surfactants, polymers, salts and pigments.Note de contenu : - Table 1 : Physicochemical properties of studied aroma molecules En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Q9GTXkZ0ijV_zu5Zw6SoDgFbcEMb--bZ/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=34226

Tests cutanésIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : The potential for cosmetic formulations ton induce skin irritation is an important consideration for cosmetics producers. Irritation potential may be predicted by in vitro systems, provided they are sufficiently complex to mimic the skin barrier in vivo. The objective of this work was to evaluate the dermal irritation potential of different cosmetic formulations using the human epidermis model, EpiDerm. Our study showed that in vitro tests, as an alternative to animal testing, allow for preliminary assessment of a cosmetic formulation's irritation potential. However, further studies are required to evaluate the usefulness of in vitro epidermis models to predict in vivo skin irritation.
