Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Polyurethanes have extensive structure/property diversity. They can be synthesized with a number of materials to modify and tailor their performance. There is interest in broadening the performance profile of Thermoplastic Polyurethanes (TPUs) with increased thermal stability and greater hydrophobicity. PPE telechelic macromonomers (PPE-M) are unique hydrophobic polyols which have an impressive track record in broadly enhancing the performance of epoxy resins, cyanate esters, and thermoplastics. Seeking to meet this demand for enhanced TPU performance, PPE-M were used to synthesize amphiphilic polyurethane block copolymers. In this paper, the performance properties of TPUs produced using these novel hydrophobic polyols are presented and their properties compared against reference TPUs. It was found that TPUs derived from these novel polyols maintain exceptional physical and mechanical performance while also exhibiting improved resistance to moisture and thermo-oxidative degradation. In addition, abrasion, tear, electric insulating properties, and chemical resistance were improved.

A wide array of solvent-free technologies of this type can be formulated to have a plethora of chemical physical properties by carefully selecting the amines, polyols, or a combination thereof. This is particularly true for the polyurethanes and polyurethane hybrids.
Solvent-free polyurethanes, polyureas, and polyurethane/polyurea hybrid technologies can be used in either a pure form or when slightly modified to customize required performance properties.Note de contenu : - LINING SELECTION : THE INFLUENCE OF CHEMISTRY IN POLYURETHANE, POLYUREA AND HYBRIDS

Transparence (optique)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A series of polyester polyols were synthesized using 1,6-hexanediol (HDO), 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol (1,4-CHDM) and trimethylol propane (TMP), alone or in combination with 1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid and adipic acid. The polyester polyols were reacted with isocyanate trimers to form polyurethane (PU) coatings. Physical properties of the polyesters such as hydroxyl value, acid value, molecular weight, viscosity, and glass transition temperature (T g) had been determined, and the IR spectroscopic analyses of polyesters/PU were reported. The properties (impact resistance, film flexibility, hardness, optical transmittance, chemical resistance, water absorption, thermostability, and phase separation) of the PU coatings so prepared were characterized. The viscosities of polyester polyols were dependent on the structure of the alcohols. Polyester polyol containing only linear aliphatic diol (HDO) was a transparent liquid at room temperature. The viscosity was increased by raising the molar ratio of 1,4-CHDM and/or TMP. All PU coatings had excellent flexibility, impact resistance, and hardness. The coatings derived from diol CHDM had the highest hardness, and the PU derived from diol HDO had the lowest hardness. The chemical resistance and water absorption improved with greater molar ratios of 1,4-CHDM or TMP. Results of differential scanning calorimetry and wide-angle X-ray diffraction indicated that there was no obvious crystallinity in the PU networks. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) results revealed that both CHDM and TMP can increase the T g of PU, and the crosslinking density improved with increased molar ratio of TMP. Atomic force microscope (AFM) and DMA analysis revealed that the PU coatings had no obvious microphase separation, which enabled them to have excellent properties, and the different composition in polyols did not have significant influence on transmittance in the visible region. Results of thermogravimetric measurements indicated that all the PU coatings had good thermal stability. UrethanesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Soybean oil based polyols-soybean oil phosphate ester polyols (SOPEPs)-having varying hydroxyl content and viscosity were prepared as low cost and low-VOC polyols for coatings applications. These SOPEPs were used as the hydroxyl component of "two-component polyurethane (2K-PU)" coating compositions and their film properties were studied. Blends of commercial polyester polyol and SOPEP in varying proportions were also used to formulate PU coatings. Their film properties were studied and compared. We found that SOPEP can be used as the sole hydroxyl component or as the reactive diluent for polyester polyols in 2K-PU coating systems. SOPEP is derived from a relatively inexpensive and renewable resource and the use of SOPEP can substantially reduce VOC and cost ofPU coating formulations.
