TaninsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Resins were prepared from phenol formaldehyde and Uncaria gambier tannin by copolymerization at 100°C. Tannin was used to substitute phenol upto 50% using 5, 8 and 11% alkali concentrations. Adhesive formulations and gluing conditions were examined by preparing laboratory 3-ply sal (Shorea robusta) boards (53.34cm x 53.34cm). In order to study the effect of alkali concentration and molar ratio of phenol with tannin, the gluing results obtained were analyzed and it was revealed that the glue shear strength of the plywood can meet the requirements of the Indian Standards IS: 303-1989, for exterior grade plywood. Hence Uncaria gambier tannin would be a desirable substitute for phenol as a low cost material and the studied tannin based adhesive is suitable for industrial application. UréeIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : The treatment and utilisation of chromium containing tannery waste has been of increasing concern because of the environmental pressure for safe disposal. The aim of this work is a development of the intermediate acids of the syntan to hydrolyse chrome shavings, then the hydrolysed mixtures were condensed with formaldehyde and urea to obtain a composite condensation retanning agent by the one-pot method. The effects of hydrolysis temperature, hydrolysis duration and the amount of chrome shavings were investigated. The molecular weight of the hydrolysate was controlled. The prepared composite condensations were applied for retanning bovine upper leather. The results showed that the prepared composite condensates have an excellent thickening [substance increase], filling and good level-dyeing effect on bovine upper leather. Furthermore, two benefits exist in this development, one is that no extra acid need to be added in the hydrolysis step and the other is that the chromium present does not need to be separated since the final composite product contains Cr(III).

SulfonationIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The present work involves the preparation of a retanning agent from the organics present in the black liquor generated by paper and pulp industry. Black liquor organics was extracted by using solvent extraction method and subsequently separated as acidic, non-acidic and organic compounds that were not degraded. Acidic and non acidic organics were sulfonated and further condensed with formaldehyde to obtain a product ideal for application. Sulfonation – condensation reactions were modulated to achieve particle size on par with that of commercial syntans. Condensed products from both acidic and non-acidic components were used in lieu of synthetic tanning agents in retanning. The final leathers exhibit offwhite color with good mechanical strength as compared to leathers from commercial phenolic syntan. This work reveals that the black liquor, which is a by-product of paper and pulp industry could through an innovative process, be turned into a retanning agent for leather processing. The product has the advantage of being able to replace phenol – a product with high market fluctuation.

ViscositéIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Sulfonated amino resins like urea and melamine formaldehyde resins are widely used in retanning of leather. Both urea and melamine formaldehyde resins show free formaldehyde contents in the retanned leather greater than permissible limits Oppm). In this research sulfonated isophthalic dihydrazide formaldehyde condensates have been prepared through controlled reaction of isophthalic dihydrazide with formaldehyde and sodium metabisulfite under different reactant conditions to optimize the free formaldehyde content in retanned leather within permissible limits. The retanning behaviours of these resin have been investigated. Tear strength, tensile strength, elongation at break and morphology of grain and cross section of fibre through scanning electron microscopy of the retanned leather has been studied. TGA was performed to evaluate the thermal stability of the resin. Structural elucidation of the optimized resin was characterized by FTIR.
