Revêtements -- Additifs:Peinture -- AdditifsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Each latex paint formulator, both experienced and novice, has encountered various kaolins in start point formulations, which are usually an additional filler, as a titanium dioxide substitution, sheen and gloss modifier of paints in the middle range of pigment volume concentration, or simply as an additional filler present in a formulation without indicating its special property to be added to it. For the latter reason, usually formulators of latex paints, not having sufficiently presented benefits of using a specific kaolin in the formulation, decide to replace it with other types of kaolin. Often, such a substitution is dictated by economic decisions, as the kaolin present in the stripe formulation may be more expensive than the one currently available for the production of current latex paints or requires an order as it has not been used in a given paint factory so far. Often, the lack of appropriate case studies showing the benefits of using this particular kaolin result in modification of the starting recipe in the direction of deteriorating the properties of the coatings, e.g. in terms of opacity, sheen and gloss, etc. Of course, such modifications are carried out mostly unconsciously, because the formulator intends to replace it with a different kaolin, which is assumed to be a similar kaolin that is currently used in production recipes. ViscositéIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Cellulose thickeners are the basic group of rheological modifiers ensuring the viscosity of dispersion paints in the low-shear (Brookfield) and mid-shear forces (Stormer) area. They provide resting viscosity and allow the paint structure to be rebuilt after application to the substrate at higher shear rates (e.g. roller), preventing sagging. Standard grades of hydroxyethyl cellulose as paint thickeners are common and used in both high and low PVC (pigment volume concentration) latex paint formulations. In low-cost contractor's dispersion paints with very high PVC (e.g. ceiling paints), HEC also acts as a binder supporting the binding of pigments and fillers. Unfortunately, typical HEC thickeners do not allow for non-spattering properties when painting with a roller, and such a feature is extremely desirable for the paint market, especially where interior painting is performed by non-professional painters. The solution to this problem cornes with hydrophobically-modified HEC thickeners, the effectiveness of which will be discussed in this article. Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In recent years, the industry has succeeded in achieving adequate performance of coatings for automotive, industrial, and decorative applications, both in terms of mechanical and aesthetical properties. Nevertheless, there is an increasing demand for novel light stabilizers which can meet even today's higher performance and quality requirements as well as cost pressures. It is well known, for example in the automotive industry, that UV-absorbers (UVA) based on hydroxyphenyl-s-triazines (HPT) are capable of fulfilling these requirements where 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-benzotriazoles (BTZ) tend to fail or show inferior properties. Besides the well-known HPT for automotive applications, other high-performance products have been developed for an even broader range of applications comprising, for example, thin- or reduced-film applications, powder coatings, and extremely durable wood coatings. New encapsulation techniques make it even possible to convert most of these hydrophobic products into highly compatible and stable water-based product forms. This opens the door for the advanced HPT UVA for a broad range of possible waterborne and solventborne DOI : 10.1007/s11998-007-9025-0 En ligne : https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007%2Fs11998-007-9025-0.pdf Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=3611

ThixotropieIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Flow behavior is one of the most important methodological properties of a coating system, it determines to a great extent the usability and accessibility of the coating material. Rheology is the science of flow and deformation of matter and rheological additives are used to control and modify this flow behavior. When a coating system is stored pigments and fillers tend to settle and form sediments, which can be quite hard at times and hence difficult to re-disperse. Application of a coating at higher film thickness on a vertical or inclined substrate can show sagging or runs down. Higher viscosities in the lower shear range and vice versa substantially reduce both sedimentation and sagging. This results in a longer shelf life and less setting. However, the rheological properties described above may also have undesirable effects on deaeration / defoaming and surface flow of the coating : air bubbles rise to the coating surface more slowly and the leveling of the surface is impaired. Clearly, the "right' flow behavior is always a compromise determined by the application parameters for each application. To achieve proper leveling and antisagging as well as antisettling property, the rheological agents play an important role in system.
