Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Antimicrobial coatings on a wide variety of hard and soft substrates were prepared by exposing surfaces treated with novel N-halamine siloxane precursor monomers and macro-monomers to oxidative halogen solutions. Suspensions of a range of bacterial, viral, fungal and yeast micro-organisms were applied to the halogen-charged coatings for defined intervals, before recovery and quantification of surviving microbes using appropriate neutralisation and culture techniques. The biocidal surfaces exhibited powerful, broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties, inactivating most challenge microbes in contact times measured in minutes to hours, rather than the extended contact incubation periods usually associated with substrate-bound antimicrobial agents. Antimicrobial effects were also demonstrated to prevent odour caused by bacterial generation of ammonia in an experimental simulation of a urine-soaked nappy pad. Contact times for efficacy were related to bound halogen concentrations per unit of surface area. Potential benefits of these novel rechargeable biocidal surfaces cover a range, from limiting contamination of environmental surfaces with disease agents in healthcare or food service facilities, to controlling odour and mildew in bathrooms, and preventing odour formation in incontinence pads. They also confer antimicrobial protective functions on textiles and non-woven filter media for air and water. Note de contenu : - N-halamine siloxane preparations and coating compositions

SurfactantsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Phosphate ester surfactants have been widely used as primary anionic emulsifiers for emulsion polymerisation for many years. We are unaware of any published data related to phosphate ester product to effectiveness in latex syntheses. The introduction of this type of surfactant into paint formulation as a wetting and dispersing agent significantly enhance the overhall paint performance on gloss, colour acceptance and stain removal performance. Certain phosphate esters in low VOC formulations can replace glycols and other volatile reagents to improve open time, freeze-thaw and heat stability. The work described in this paper was undertaken to provide a framework for the use of this type of surfactant in pure-acrylic, styrene-acrylic latex synthesis. The overhall performance of phosphate ester surfactant in paint formulation is presented. The APE free Rhodafac employed in this study are complex phosphate ester of polyoxyethylene nonionic surfactants. They are mixtures of both mono- and diesters of the following generic structures. Phosphates ester surfactants are produced acid derivatives. Tipically, the commercial phosphate ester surfactant products are a mixture of monoester, diester and unreacted alcohols and phosphorics acids. Unreacted phosphoric acids are normally present as impurities. Typîcal levels of residual acids are given in. Rhodia's phosphation technology could produce products with superior mono / di alkyl phosphate (MAP/DAP) ratios and lower phosphoric acid content.

RhéologieIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : End customers' decisions are ultimately determined by quality and high demand for excellent visual appearance. The new surface additives improve processing and visuel appearance significantly. In solvent-based can and coil coatings, such specially developed polyacrylates provide excellent appearance. The products' composition and their far-reaching listings and registration leads to universal application. Recoatability is excellent, due to the fact that they do not impair the surface energy of cured films. Both new additives fulfill 21 CFR FDA regulations 175.300 and all components are listed in Annex 6 in the lists for evaluated (A) or not evaluated (B) substances according to Swiss Ordinance (SR 817.023.21).
- The new flow additive shows a broad compatibility with all binders and high optical transparency.
- The new flow additive provides flow improvement as well as an additional deaerating effect.
- Both products are free of hazardous ingredients like BPA, aromatics and halogens.

These challenges may inhibit the efficacy of selected additives, which are particularly important in low-VOC formulations to address foam control, water sensitivity, and general surface properties. Silicone additives in particular are disproportionately influential in impacting film properties at low use levels given the materials distinct chemistry. High throughput methodologies have been developed to screen and identify top performing additives candidates to address desired performance targets. The use of slip/mar additives has been a recent area of focus, with high throughput methods aiding in the exploration of additive impact on properties that include friction coefficients, mar and abrasion resistance, hardness, surface defects, and clarity. This work addresses the development of these methods and identifies top classes of silicone chemistries to balance desired film performance in wood coatings formulations.
