ViscositéIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : Wax esters, like most lipidic materials, have a long history of use in personal care and cosmetics. For example, in 2nd century BCE China, it was common practice to apply naturally occurring animal fats and vegetable oils onto human skin to soothe or heal wounds.
Although there was no formal knowledge about the composition of these natural fats, early users reasoned they must be similar to the composition of human skin, thus making them key ingredients in early ointments, liniments and salves. Aside from being efficient, these early formulations were relatively resistant to microbiological contamination and stable over time. Their shortcomings, like oxidation and rancidity, were eventually overcome with the introduction of antioxidants and replacement with synthetic ingredients.
Today's chemists are evolving with the global demand for functional, sustainable and renewable plant derived materials. In this paper, we study three alkyl esters that meet these current needs.Note de contenu : - Functionality & sustainability

Pigments
Silicones -- Emploi en cosmétologieIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : Colour cosmetics are a ubiquitous element of personal care products, owing to the diversity of applications in which colour can be used. End-use applications include liquid and powder foundations, BB creams, concealer, blush, eye eye shadow, lipstick, mascara, skin care and sunscreens. The colouring material in a particular formulation depends on the desired colour effect. For example, in the case of a shimmering eye shadow, a one-hundred micron interference flake type material could be used, whereas in the case of a foundation, pigments less than one micron are used for a skin tone match. To formulate with pigments in powdered form requires proper handling and processing prior to and during formulation. Using colour dispersions alleviates these types of intermediate steps and offers benefits of colour development with consistency of batches. Dispersions of metal oxides and organic pigments in multiple carriers are typically available. Only homogenisation may be required to have a successful, final product based on a colour dispersion. Spectroscopie de la résonance magnétique nucléaireIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The crosslinking of alkyd resins has been studied using ethyl linoleate and methyl ricinoate as model compounds. With quantitative 13C NMR it was established that ether- and peroxy-crosslinks were formed in roughly equal amounts. Double bonds reacted to give epoxides, endoperoxides, and β-scission into aldehydes. Using SIMS it was established that dimers through pentamers were formed having included several oxygen atoms. After reduction of peroxide (crosslinks) with stannous chloride, the higher oxygen homologues decreased. In the NMR spectrum of the reduced material, peroxide and epoxide signals completely disappeared. High resolution electrospray ionization mass spectra (ESI-MS) yielded evidence regarding the crosslink mechanism. The non-conjugated linoleic acid was found to crosslink by combination of radicals: dimers were having masses 2(M-1). The conjugated linoleic acid crosslinked by addition of radicals to the double bond and disproportionation, yielding masses 2M as well. (M = mass of ethyl linoleate or methyl ricinoate, respectively, including several oxygen atoms.) EIS-MS of oligomers after isotopic exchange enabled estimation of OH and OOH groups. shampooingsIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : This research explores the hair care benefits of hydrolyzed jojoba esters ; an ingredient most commonly used in skin care formulations for its film-forming attributes and ability to fix small, active molecules (e.g. glycerin, titanium dioxide, and dihydroxyacetone) on the skin surface for long-lasting effects. It is difficult to find natural ingredient options that function similarly to silicones and quaternary nitrogen compounds, which are often used in hair care products to provide color and heat protection, reductions in wet and dry comb force, or frizz control and shine. A series of ex vivo, vehicle-controlled, double-blind studies were performed to characterize the performance benefits of incorporating hydrolyzed jojoba esters into rince-off shampoo and conditioner products. The results indicate that hydrolyzed jojoba esters indeed have a beneficial effect within rince-off hair care applications. They remained deposited on the hair after rinsing, and were able to provide the following statistically significant benefits : reductions in wet comb force and frizz, less hair dye fading, and increased consumer perception of healthy appearance of hair, volume, smoothness/sleekness, overall product performance, frizz management, shine, softness, and hair hydration. Hydrolyzed jojoba esters offer formulators an effective natural alternative to provide functions and benefits traditionally produced by synthetic compounds.
