Produits nettoyantsIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The effective removal of hardened manure/mud balls from cattle hides remains a challenge for the livestock industry. Hardened manure/mud balls must be removed to minimize the risk of microbial meat contamination and hide quality deterioration. To overcome this challenge, we developed thioglycolic acid and its sodium, potassium and ammonium salts containing formulations. In this study, the developed four formulations were compared based on their efficacy in removing adobe type mud/manure balls from the hides in short time. Hide pieces containing hardened manure/mud balls were soaked in the formulations for 5 minutes followed by gentle brushing to remove the debris. The firmly attached mud/manure balls were removed completely from the hide pieces soaked in sodium, potassium and ammonium thioglycolate containing formulations. However, thioglycolic acid containing formulation did not show that much efficacy and the debris remained attached in the hide pieces soaked in water which was used as a control. Moreover, naturally onboard aerobic bacteria count was significantly reduced along with the mud/manure balls removal from hide pieces. After treatment, the hide pieces were processed into crust shoe leather for quality check analysis including mechanical properties, leather surface analysis and general appearance. The crust leathers made from hide pieces treated with the formulation exhibited similar quality to that made from the control. The implementation of this inventive formulations in slaughterhouses or leather industry will drastically reduce the time consuming and labor-intensive operations currently employed to remove firmly attached debris from cattle hide surface.

Tannage végétalIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Adobe-type (hardened) manure attached to bovine hair is a major source of meat contamination, hide quality deterioration, and devalued leather products. Therefore, it is important to develop cleaning solutions that can rapidly remove adobe-type manure to improve the quality of hides delivered to tanners for leather processing. Oxidative chemicals such as sodium percarbonate (SPC) have been used as an environmentally friendly alternative to dehair bovine hides in 1-4 hours. In this study, we do not aim to dehair the hide with SPC, but to weaken and shorten the hair enough to remove the adobe-type manure from the hide in under 30 minutes. Our formula substantially removed adobe-type manure in less than 30 minutes using a combination of SPC and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) as a soaking solution in a tumbling drum. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy showed the oxidation of cystine disulfide bridges in keratin, the structural protein of hair, indicating that our formula weakened the hair after treatment. A decrease in hair diameter, or hair shortening, was also observed with Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis after treatment of the hides with our formula. Our environmentally friendly formula for oxidatively removing adobe-type manure is a viable option to enhance both meat and hide quality.

Spectroscopie infrarouge procheIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : New efficient eco-friendly soaking methods are urgently needed to clean manure from raw hides for storage and shipment abroad of the ~35M bovine hides annually produced in USA. High concentrations of surfactant (~0.15% (w/w)) and biocide (~0.10%(w/w)) in commonly used presoaking solution are functional for eliminating microbial contamination, but these are quite unfriendly to the environment and are also inefficient in removing the damaging adobe-type manure. We found that a much lower concentration of surfactant (~0.0375% (w/w) and biocide (~0.025% (w/w) are sufficiently effective when crude glycerol and sodium carbonate are incorporated in the presoaking formulation. Using lower concentrations, the efficiency in removing hardened manure improved and ~70% microbial growth inhibition was still observed. Furthermore, significant manure smell reduction and additional microbial inhibition are observed when chlorine dioxide is also added. No chemical and structural alterations on finished leather samples made from the presoaked hides were observed based on non-denaturing Near Infrared (NIR) spectroscopy analysis. The leather products made from hides that were presoaked in newly developed formulations showed comparable or even better mechanical properties than the control leather products obtained from traditionally treated hides. Considering the low cost in the procurement and the presence of other ingredients in it that have enhanced the efficiency in softening and removing of adobe type manure, crude glycerol is quite desirable as an ingredient in the new eco-friendly presoaking formulation. StatistiqueIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : In this study, a formulation and technique are developed to be used for cattle carcass decontamination prior to removal of hide in a commercially preferred time-frame to ensure meat safety and byproduct quality. This formulation offers deep cleaning on carcass surface by removing debris including manure/mud balls which are firmly attached to the hair of animal hide harboring pathogens like Salmonella and Escherichia coli. Survival of such pathogens can facilitate cross-contamination of the underlying meat and meat-processing equipment in the packing plant posing a challenge to the meat industry as well as public-health. Also, the attached adobe type mud/manure balls have potential to create holes on the hide during leather processing which degrades byproduct’s quality. Formulation was sprayed on cattle’s hide and the attached debris were brushed off from the surface. The formulation was found very efficient in cleaning the hide surface both at 5 and 8 min treatments. The highest of aerobic, Escherichia coli and Salmonella populations were reduced by 8.71, 3.63 and 3.19 Log CFU/50 in 2 , respectively when compared to water-wash. The efficacy of formulation can be optimized by adjusting its concentration and treatment time. Post-leather analysis showed no detrimental impact on byproduct caused by the formulation. SophorolipidesIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Previously developed new soaking formulations have been shown to soften and eventually remove adobe type manure and its damaging effects on bovine hides. The mechanical stress due to the weight and pressure of hard-to-remove adobe-type manure on bovine hides can cause unwanted holes in the finished leather. The incorporation of crude glycerol and sodium carbonate with or without sophorolipid (a biodegradable surfactant) in the soaking solution was found to be effective in the softening and subsequent removal of the adobe-type manure. The leather industry is interested in the potential effects of these newly developed soaking formulations on leather quality. The standard soaking solution that the hide industry is generally utilizing is composed of a high concentration (0.10-0.15%) of biocide and surfactant. In this study, we report that by utilizing crude glycerol and sodium carbonate, the inclusion of only ~10-25% of the standard soaking solution has the potential to soften and facilitate the removal of adobe-type manure. The mechanical properties of the leather products made from the hides soaked in these newly developed formulations are superior thus improving the overall quality of the finished leather.
