Tension superficielleIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : Over the years Dr Rosen has examined, characterised, and evaluated many different types of surfactants and their ability to function to very specialised applications. His studies helped provide structure / function insights into how surfactants act iin aqueous systems. Building off his work with traditional fatty surfactants in water, the chemistry world was expanded into the realm of non-traditional systems. Such systems include silicone / hydrocarbon surfactants in oil based systems. A silicone / hydrocarbon system can be easily studied and characterised by following the blueprint set forth by Dr Rosen. Just like the systems that Dr Rosen studied, these systems take advantage of the fact that hydrocarbon and silicone are immiscible in each other and have surface activity. As it turns out, when studying the silicone systems, they behave much like fatty surfactants do in aqueous systems. It is perfectly legitimate to ask what is the 'CMC' of cetyl dimethicone in mineral oil or in olive oil. This paper will discuss the properties of silicone surfactants used in oil based anhydrous systems and compare them to standard surfactants in aqueous systems. Note de contenu : - Surfactants

Taille des particulesIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : Because emulsions are metastable, predicting their stability and phase bahavior is a crucial topic of research. Indeed, emulsions are widely used in the chemical industry and formulators must be able to asses their stability e.g. life-cycle or shelves-life. Although several devices, avaible on the market, are claiming to be able to asses emulsions' stability, they often use laser or ultrasound diffraction techniques which offer limited capabilities for studying opaque emulsions. This study is decribing how the usage of a simple light microscope, already present as a standard equipment in lots of laboratories, can lead to the precise assessment of the particle-size distribution of various cosmetic o/w emulsions. The light microscope was equipped with an objective (40x) having a negative phase-contrast ring. The particle-size characterization by means of phase-contrast microscopy enabled to draw conclusion about the stability over time of two o/w emulsions and to observe the influence of additives on their phase behavior. This novel image analysis method delivered relevant information about the particle-size distribution i.e. stability, of the emulsions at an earlier stage than classical stability tests mathods. ViscositéIndex. décimale : 667.6 Peintures Résumé : The European VOC directive will dramatically change the coatings market over the next two years. Solventborne alkyd resins as know today will largely disappear. The challenge for the resin producer and paint formulator is to develop alkyd based coatings with minimal solvent levels. With selected and properly formulated surfactants, water can be incorporated in solventborne alkyd based coatings as a dispersed phase to partially replace hydrocarbons. The use of "non-migratory surfactants' as external emulsion stabilisers allows development of low VOC alkyd based coatings with excellent shelf life and film quality.
Note de contenu : - 1.
