SurfactantsIndex. décimale : 668.1 Agents tensioactifs : savons, détergents Résumé : The surface activity of newly nonionic hydroxyl mixed ether surfactants HMEn at air/water and solid/water interfaces was studied as a function of ethoxylation degree (n-value). The characteristics of this series of nonionic surfactant, including surface tension, critical micelle concentration cmc, adsorption onto hydrophilic saponite clay and hydrophobic Teflon are reported. The surface tension results indicate that cmc, surface tension after gamma-cmc, and the minimum surface area per adsorbed HME-surfactant molecule Amin are all increased with n-value. Results of static light scattering are in agreements with those obtained using surface tension method. For HME-surfactants, strong adsorption measured by surface tension onto the hydrophilic synthetic clay mineral saponite. This result was also observed by atomic force microscopy AFM for HME9.7 onto hydrophilic mica surface. On the other hand, the adsorption of HME-surfactant onto hydrophobic polytetraflouroethylene PTFE (Teflon) is less than that measured onto saponite. However, the adsorption at both surfaces has the same dependency on n-value. Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=3047

Surfactants -- ToxicologieIndex. décimale : 668.1 Agents tensioactifs : savons, détergents Résumé : There is a general paucity of literature data dealing with surfactants monitoring in sediments using specific methodologies. The only surfactants for which a consistent data set already exists are Linear Alkylbenzene Sulphonate (LAS) and Nonyl Phenol Ethoxylate (NPE). Concentrations of LAS and NPE, have in fact been monitored in both fresh water and marine sediments and were generally found to range from 0 to 5.0 mg/kg. Higher levels were reported only for some sediments collected close to untreated or inadequately treated sewage effluent discharges. This paper reviews the existing monitoring data for these surfactants in sediments and also reports the preliminary results of a recent monitoring programme carried out on the bottom sediments of the main watercourse in Italy, the river Po, using HPLC methodologies. For the first time, attention has been focused not only on LAS but also on Alcohol Ethoxylate (AE). To our knowledge this is the first example of a concentration-specific estimate of AE in sediments. These results will be discussed and compared with the limited toxicity information which is available on benthic organisms. At constant 0.25 latex particle volume fraction, increasing HEUR caused stable, followed by phase separated (syneresis), and stable mixtures as HEUR concentration increased from 0% to 2.0% (by weight) in the latex-thickener aqueous mixture. The mixtures that underwent syneresis were flocculated. The relationship between the flocculation behavior and the composition of the latex-HEUR mixtures is consistent with previous work reported by other investigators. However, detailed rheological data on systems like these that have undergone syneresis have not been reported. This paper presents detailed viscosity vs shear rate data and correlates viscosity trends with the both flocculation and syneresis behavior. The stable latex-HEUR mixtures at low HEUR levels show Newtonian or shear-thinning viscosity with well-defined low-shear Newtonian plateaus. As HEUR level is increased to levels at which syneresis is observed, erratic rheological profiles with shear thinning as well as thickening are observed. This type of shear thickening has been attributed to bridging flocculation by other investigators. When HEUR level is further increased to levels at which no syneresis is observed, low-shear Newtonian plateaus re-appeared, albeit at higher viscosities. Detailed analysis of syneresis and shear-thickening behavior of a latex-HEUR mixture containing 0.5% (by weight) HEUR showed two shear-thickening regions, one between 0.1 and 0.5 s−1 shear rate range and another between 30 and 100 s−1 shear rate range. Molecular weight distribution (MWD) of the HEUR thickener indicates that the two shear-thickening regions are related to the bi-modal nature of the thickener’s MWD. The surface tension at cmc (Ycmc) and critical micelle concentration (cmc) of the surfactants in aqueous solutions have been investigated. C20 values (surfactant concentration in the solution phase that will reduce the surface tension of the solvent by 20 mNm–1) were also obtained. The critical micellar concentration (cmc) and the minimum average area per surfactant molecule (Amin) at the air-water interface of Gemini surfactant decrease with increasing number of methylene moieties in the spacer and, consequently, with the enhanced hydrophilic character of the molecule. The results were discussed with particular emphasis on the effect of the length spacer on the hydrophilic character of the spacer group. The surface studies of the molecules confirm that the exothermic values of the differential enthalpy of micellization (DmicH°) decrease as the methylene moieties are lengthened. Moreover, the values of the free energy (DmicG°) and entropy (DmicS°) of micellization indicate an entropy driven phenomenon for all surfactants. The effect of length spacer on surfactant adsorption for Gemini surfactants was utilized to calculate such thermodynamic parameters as the free energy of adsorption (DadsG°) and the heat of adsorption (DadsH°). The low value of DadsH° is an evidence for the physical adsorption of anionic surfactants. The relatively large value of entropic contribution (TDadsS°) indicates that the adsorption of anionic surfactants is entropically governed. TriéthanolamineIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In this study, size-tunable magnetite (Fe3O4) nanocrystal spheres were promptly synthesized by a facile one-pot solvothermal process with the presence of triethanolamine as an additive. The as-synthesized Fe3O4 nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and vibrating sample magnetometer. The results showed that the synthesized nanoparticles were in the size range of 30–350 nm, had well-defined Fe3O4 crystal phase, and had favorable saturation magnetization. The effects of various important parameters, such as initial Cr(VI) concentration, temperature, and pH, on the adsorption properties of the as-obtained Fe3O4 particles for the removal of Cr(VI) in aqueous solution were deeply analyzed and studied. The results confirmed that the adsorption efficiency was highly pH dependent, decreased with the increasing of initial concentration of Cr(VI), and increased with increasing temperature. The adsorption data were well fitted with the Langmuir isotherm. The maximum adsorption capacity calculated from the Langmuir isotherm was 56.625 mg g−1 at temperature of 35°C and pH of 2.0.
