Oxidized maltodextrin : A novel ligand for aluminum-zirconium complex tanning / Xueru Guo in JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN LEATHER CHEMISTS ASSOCIATION (JALCA), Vol. CXVI, N° 5 (05/2021)
[article]

ZirconiumIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) oxidized maltodextrin was prepared as the ligand for aluminum–zirconium complex tanning. The effects of catalyst dosage, initiation temperature, and H2O2 dosage on maltodextrin oxidation were investigated. FT-IR analysis demonstrated that carboxyl groups were successfully introduced into oxidized maltodextrin. The carboxyl content and degradation degree of oxidized maltodextrin increased with the increase of H2O2 dosage. Maltodextrin oxidized by 40% H2O2 and 0.015% Cu–Fe catalyst at an initiation temperature of 70°C (OD-40) with moderate carboxyl group (6.75 mmol/g) and molecular weight (Mw 450) promoted the penetration and fixation of aluminum–zirconium salts in leather and showed better tanning performance, such as hydrothermal stability and porosity of leather, than traditional citric acid ligand. Tannage Résumé : Perval 20 and Perval 30 are oxidized degraded products of valonia extract prepared using 20 % and 30 % H2O2 (w/w). Single-bath combination tannages of Perval 20 with Cr(III) or Al(III) and tanning using Perval 30 Cr(III) complex were studied. The combination of 1.5-3.0 % Perval 20 and 1.0-1.5 % Cr2O3 produced leathers with shrinkage temperatures above 110 C, so did the Perval 30 — Cr(III) complex in similar offers. The combination tannage of 1.8% Perval 20 and 1.5 Al(III) in a single bath produced leather of Ts = 96°C, 26°C higher than aluminium tanning. The more remarkable synergistic effects of these two products with Cr(III) and Al(III) are due to their increasing carboxyl contents, as shown in the paper. It could be seen that the reduced chrome and chrome-free tannages established here would be more practical because of simplified processes alike to chrome tanning and elimination of the vegetable tanned character of leathers. Wet-blue (tannage)Peau tannée au chrome (le chrome donne une couleur bleue)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Five flame retardants obtained as commercial products or prepared by the laboratory, including amino sulfonic ammonium [sulphamic acid], borax, ammonium polyphosphate, pentaerythritol-dihydrogenphosphate bisestermelamine and phosphated amino resin, were selected to treat wet blue pig. A unified treatment process was used with type and dosage of flame retardant as the two running parameters. The flammability of the leather was tested by two methods - vertical flame test (ALCA Method E 50) and oxygen index test method (ASTM D 2863-74). Besides the fire-safety characteristics, other physical and mechanical properties of leather samples, such as tensile strength, tear strength, breaking stretch [elongation], thickness, Ts, etc. were also evaluated. The results indicate that all of the above flame retardants can enhance the flame resistance of leather.
According to the oxygen index (OI) value of the leather samples treated with different flame retardants (12%), the performance of flame retardants on leather can be ranked as : ammonium polyphosphate > borax > phosphated amino resin > pentaerythritol-dihydrogenphosphate bisester-melamine > amino sulfonic ammonium [sulphamic acid]. The results of vertical flammability test indicate that all the tested flame-retardant chemicals can improve the fire resistance of leather and that, ammonium polyphosphate is the best flame retardant at the dosage of 12%. The results of the mechanical properties tests show that all these chemicals, except pentaerythritoldihydrogenphosphate bisester-melamine, have an influence on the leather’s thickness, handle and grain condition and reduce the strength of the leather to a greater or lesser extent.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE : Materials - Preparation of leather samples - Oxygen Index Test - Vertical Flame Test - Determination of other Properties

Tannage Résumé : A new tetrakis hydroxymethyl phosphonium sulphate (THPS)-zirconium combination tanning system has been developed. The optimum dosage of THPS, pickling pH and basifying pH were 2.0%, 3.5 and 5.0, respectively. The amount of THPS and zirconium sulphate were optimized at 2.0% and 2.5% (based on the pelt weight). The influence of ligands on the shrinkage temperature (Ts) of leathers has also been studied and the Ts of THPS alone and THPS-zirconium combination tanned leathers was much better than the relevant colour fastness to dry/wet rub of THPS alone tanned leathers.
Scanning electron microscopic studies show that the fibre weave of THPS-zirconium combination tanned leather was much closer than for THPS only tanned leather and the fibre weave of THPS-zirconium combination tanned leather was closer with an increase of amount of zirconium sulphate. Hence, this proves that the softness was reduced with an increase of the amount of zirconium sulphate and that the reactivity of zirconium sulphate with collagen fibre was very strong. The bulk trial carried out in Haining Shangyuan Leather Co., Ltd., proved that all indexes of the leather reached Chinese standard requirements.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE : Materials - Determination of Ts - Optimization of the dosage of THPS - Optimizing pH - THPS-zirconium combination tanning - Physical testing and handle of leather - Test of Cr2O3, Cr6+ and formaldehyde content - Analysis with scanning electron microscopic (SEM)

Tannage au chromeIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Leather dyeing is an essential process in the leather industry, where synthetic dyes are predominantly used. However, the environmental concerns associated with synthetic dyes have led to rising interest in natural dyes as sustainable alternatives. The use of biomordants is however, gaining attention due to their eco-friendly nature and potential to enhance dye fixation and colour fastness. This study aimed at determining the physical and fastness properties of leather dyed using natural dye extract from beetroot peels with the assistance of a biomordant derived from Acacia nilotica barks and banana pseudo stem sap. The dyeing process involved the use of the biomordant in both a pre and post-mordanting technique. Various fastness properties of dyed leather were investigated to assess the quality and durability of the dyeing process including water spotting fastness according to ISO 15700, mild washing fastness according to ISO 15703, and rub fastness (dry and wet rub fastness) according to ISO 11640. To determine the effect of the biomordant on the strength properties of the leather, the physical properties of the dyed leather were also evaluated. The tensile and tear strength of the dyed leather were measured on an Instron using IUP 6. The dye bath exhaustion was measured using spectrophotometric analysis. The dyed leatherʼs fastness properties were discovered to be good to excellent on a grey scale of 5. All of the samples exceeded the minimum recommended values (UNIDO 1996) for tensile strength (>20N/mm2), percentage elongation at break (>40%), and tear strength (>30N/mm). The samples dyed with Acacia nilotica bark as a biomordant had the highest dye bath exhaustion, followed by banana pseudo stem sap, and leather dyed without any mordant had the lowest dye bath exhaustion. According to the results obtained in this study, the use of biomordant in the dyeing of leather with natural dye from beetroot peels improved the fastness properties of the dyed leather as well as the strength of the resulting leather. Furthermore, the biomordant promoted dye uptake. Note de contenu : - MATERIALS AND METHODS : Materials - Methods - Physical properties of the dyed leather
