One fatliquor is made from pure canola oil, the second one from castor oil and the third one is made from a mixture of different oils, which is termed here as ‘Blended oil’. Canola oil is used for fat-liquoring purpose and has been compared with other natural oil based fat-liquors and a commercially available sulfated fat-liquor. Different chemical and physical studies were carried out to find out the fat-liquor producing the best results. Chemical studies of fat-liquor such as pH, fat content, solid content, moisture and organically combined sulfuric anhydride were determined before its application on leather. The physical studies such as tear strength, tensile strength, elongation, burst load, softness and distention were carried out on crust leather. The fat content test was carried out to check the uptake of fat-liquors by leather samples. On the basis of chemical and physical analysis the blended oil based fat liquor was found to be better than the castor & canola oil based fatliquors and commercially available sulfated fat-liquor. Wet-white (tannage)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : In view of the environmental pollution caused by chrome tanning in current tanning processes, the development of chrome-free ecological leather manufacturing technology is an important direction for the development of the leather industry. However, the strong negative charge of chrome-free tanned leather leads to the reduction of binding sites of most anionic dyeing and finishing materials, resulting in colour fading and poor handle of the finished leather. Therefore, this paper mainly uses Nvinylimidazole, bromodecan and dimethylaminoethyl acrylate as raw materials to synthesise a ionic liquid-based amphiphilic polymer surfactant through free radical polymerisation and quaternisation and then, uses it in the fatliquoring process of a chrome-free non-metallic tanned green leather. The structure and morphology of the fatliquored wet-white leather were studied by SEM and the ultra depth of a field microscope, and the softness and physical and mechanical properties of the fatliquored leather were tested. The results showed that the collagen fibres were loosely distributed and the gap between the collagen fibres was larger after fatliquoring, and the softness and physical and mechanical properties of the fatliquored leather were improved. Then, the ET was applied to the tanning process and the ET tanning approach optimized and evaluated. The result indicated that after tanning with 8% ET at pH 6 for 6 h, the shrinkage temperature of leather was 83.9°C and the thickness change rate was 97.5%. The XRD, DSC, TG, SEM and Zeta potential analyses demonstrated that ET could couple with the amino groups of the collagen side chains and breaking partial hydrogen bonds between fibers, brought significant improvement to the softness of leather without obvious damage to the high-level structure of collagen. Residual Cl- concentration in the wastewater
decreased 42.1% in the tanning process compared to the conventional chrome tanning method. The emissions of COD and TDS in the tanning process reduced by 40.5% and 27.2%, respectively. It is conceivable that the ET tanning approach provides an improved approach to promote leather industry to develop sustainably.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Materials and equipment - Preparation of polyether amine triazine derivatives (ET) - Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) - Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR) - Leather tanning processing - Determination of the shrinkage temperature - Determination of the exhaustion rate of tanning agent - Determination of the percent thickness increase - Thermal analysis - Zeta potential analyses - Morphological analyses - Whiteness analysis - X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurement - Determination of physical and mechanical properties - Environmental impact assessment

Tannage Résumé : Recently, the application of waterborne melamine resin (WMR) is greatly increasing in the leather industry because of its convenient operation, but it often suffers from poor storage stability. Here, two waterborne melamine resin retanning agents (WMRs) with high storage stability were prepared using melamine, glutaraldehyde and collagen hydrolysates (CHs) as raw materials at different mole ratios. FTIR, 13C-NMR and XPS were used to characterize the chemical structure of synthesized resins, and their retanning behaviors for wet blue and wet white leather were fully investigated. The particle sizes of WMR1 and WMR2 were 28.73 nm and 8.78 nm, and their zeta potentials were 4.0 and 4.5, respectively. The introduction of CHs provided not only good water solubility but also amphoteric properties to synthesized resins, thereby resulting in high absorption of retanning and fatliquoring agents. Moreover, the retanning application investigation of WMRs manifested good storage stability and excellent overall performance, which are comparable with commercial retanning agents. This work showed that glutaraldehyde and CH could be used as starting materials in the synthesis of environmentally friendly WMR. TannageIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The fish production chain presents losses of up to 35%, generating a large amount of waste. Using these residues to produce valueadded materials boost fish production towards a sustainable path. The use of fish skin to obtain leather is increasingly attracting the market for fashion and luxury products. Besides considered an exotic material with a unique design, fish leather also has good mechanical properties. Due to the morphology of fish skin, different mechanical responses can be observed, depending on the leather cutting direction. However, there are no specific technical standards for sampling this material. In this scenario, 45 Tambaqui skins were tanned with chromium associated with oxazolidine, and the mechanical properties of the leather were evaluated in four cutting directions: parallel, perpendicular, dorsal-ventral and ventral-dorsal, all concerning the cephalocaudal line of the fish. Skin and leather micrographs revealed layers of parallel collagen fiber bundles distributed in superimposed layers oriented obliquely to the preceding one. Insertions of collagen fibers perpendicular to the leather surface were also observed, joining the deeper layers to the superficial layers. Tensile strength (TS) and elongation (E) results indicated statistical differences, with higher TS results for the perpendicular cut and greater elongation for the parallel cut. The tear strength was higher for the ventral-dorsal cut, statistically differing from the parallel cut. The data indicate that the cutting direction of the specimen can influence the physical-mechanical behavior of the leather, reinforcing the importance of standardization for the qualitative evaluation of fish leather.
