MahiIndex. décimale : 667.4 Encres Résumé : Mahi, a unique herbal ink used in medieval Assam in India for writing and illustrating manuscripts, is known for its intense colour and durability for centuries, and its non‐corrosive nature. Mahi is distinctly different from the other contemporary inks used elsewhere in the world, including other parts of India. The interesting features of Mahi are due to its special recipe involving several herbal ingredients in addition to iron sourced from fish blood or the rust of iron tools, with cow urine as an extractant and solvent. The objective of the current study is an in-depth understanding of the traditional method of the preparation of Mahi, and its characterisation through analysis of the physicochemical properties using spectroscopic and imaging techniques as well as biochemical analysis. A series of model Mahi samples are prepared following the traditional method with varying ingredients, and their compositions and physicochemical properties are evaluated with respect to the ingredients using standard methods and analytical tools including atomic absorption spectroscopy, tensiometry, ultraviolet (UV)-visible, Fourier Transform-infrared (FT-IR), Raman, steady-state fluorescence, UV fluorescence and emission microscopy. The colour of the ink has been attributed to various polyphenols, gallic acid, epigallocatechin gallate, epicatechin, quercetin, kaempferol and tannic acid, and their iron complexes. UV fluorescence and emission microscopy confirmed an autofluorescence indicative of the presence of phenolic and chlorophyll pigments. Solubilisation by glycosidic biosurfactant contributes to stabilisation of Mahi. The non-corrosive nature of Mahi has been attributed to its neutral pH and absence of free iron and copper ions. Taille des particulesIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : DBSA (Dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid)/PSS (Polystyrene sulfonic acid) doped polypyrrole composites were synthesized by in-situ chemical oxidative polymerization method with 0 to 5°C reaction temperature for 24 h. The particle size distribution of DBSA and PSS doped polypyrrole composites were found at 78 nm, 66 nm, 85 nm, 120 nm and 173 nm for different weight ratios of PSS. The presence of sulfur and higher doping level was confirmed by energy dispersive X-ray analysis. The mass percentages of sulfur were found in 17.94%, 34.41%, 40.87%, 44.9% and 48.16% for various weight ratios of PSS. The SEM study shows the granular morphology and aggregation of polypyrrole composites. Thermal stability improves with higher concentration of PSS. FTIR study confirms the presence of dopants in the composite structure. The UV-study reveals the ???* transition in benzenoid rings of DBSA and presence of PSS. The conductivity of polypyrrole composite increases maximum upto 2.5 wt% of PSS and then decreases with increasing PSS content. Tannage Résumé : Phenolic syntans possessing methylene linkages between phenolic nuclei are susceptible to auto-oxidation producing coloured quinonoid compounds. In this respect, syntans having bridging groups like dimethylcarbamide. sulphomethyl, sulphone. sulphonamide and propylene are known to exhibit better resistance to auto-oxidation. In the present investigation, studies have been carried out to synthesise and characterise a syntan in which phenolic nuclei are linked together by a dimethyl carbamide group. Phenol was condensed with dimethylolurea and the resulting resin was subsequently sulphonated with concentrated sulphuric acid. Both phenol-dimethylolurea resin and its sulphonated product were characterised by chromatographic and spectral methods. The syntan was prepared by mutual neutralization of sulphonated and sulphomethylated phenol dimethylolurea resin to a desired pH. The syntan was subjected to chemical analysis and assessed for light fastness characteristics.
