StatistiqueIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : Hexavalent chromium (Cr)E causes dermatitis and cancer, and is often quantified from chrome-tanned leather. Analysis for Cr6+ is generally carried out after extraction into 0.1 M potassium phosphate buffer (P-buffer pH8.0) according to the method of ISO 17075. However, since the pH value of chrome-tanned leather and sweat due to wear are on the acidic side, the abovea method for Cr6+ should be validated using acidic extracts. In the present study, acidic extracts from chrome-tanned leather were analyzed for Cr6+ comparing the results with those using alkaline extracts.
A sample of commercial chrome-tanned leather was used to investigate the influence of pH an the extractability of Cr6+. Chromium was extracted from the leather with P-buffer (pH3.0-11.0), acidic artificiel perspiration (pH5.5) or 0.2% sodium sulfate (pH5.5). The contents of total chromium (Cr) and Cr6+ in each extract were respectively measured by inductive coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy and colorimetry with diphenylcarbazide. Less Cr was extracted in the range of pH5.5-8.0, whereas more Cr was extracted in the more acidic and alkaline regions. By contrast, the amount of Cr6+ extracted increased moderately with increasing pH. When the P-buffer extract (pH8.0) was adjusted to pH3.0-11.0, the amount of Cr6+ increased with increasing pH, suggesting occurrence of a reversible conversion between Cr6+ and Cr3+. The extraction with P-buffer (pH8.0) may thus pravide a falsely high value due to this conversion. P-buffer (pH5.5) showed a significantly higher extraction of than tests with artificiel perspiration (pH5.5) and 0.2% sodium sulfate (pH5.5). The residue remaining after each extraction was re-extracted with a fresh aliquot of the appropriate extractant. The amount of Cr6+ in the second extract with P-buffer (pH5.5) exhibited a Iow extractability (about 9% of the amount of the first), whereas artificiel perspiration (pH5.5), 0.2% sodium sulfate (pH5.5), and P-buffer (pH 8.0) showed a high extractability (about 41-67% of the amount of the first). lt is thus concluded that extracting with P-buffer (pH5.5) is most efficient of the tested extractants for analyzing Cr6+ from chrome-tanned leather.Note de contenu : - Materials

Tannage Résumé : A non-pickling combination tanning based on reactive benzenesulphonate (rBS) and Tannic acid (TA) has been developed for the chrome-free leather manufacturing. By optimizing the tanning process, the two-bath combination tanning with 4% rBS and 10% TA at the final pH 3.0-3.5 can raise the shrinkage temperature (Ts) of goatskins to -86°C. Morphological analysis results reveal that the chrome-free leather exhibits a clear even grain surface and isolated collagen fiber network structure. The novel combination tanning approach not only improves light fastness, but also confers high physical and mechanical properties to the chrome-free leather which can meet the Chinese standard requirements for furniture leather and shoe upper leather. The non-pickling tanning without use of salt or acid is also benefit to clean leather-making production. Température de retraitIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : In a traditional method of chrome tanning, the particle size (PS) of tanning agent is critical for its penetration and the performance of resultant leather. The temperature, pH value and concentration of chrome solution are the important parameters to influence the size scale of the chromium complex. In present study, the PS evolution of chrome tanning agent (CTA) with pH value and temperature changes was investigated firstly, then the influence of the evolution of PS on the tanning process and hydrothermal stability of crust leather was also investigated. The results indicated that with the temperature varied from 25°C to 30°C and 35°C, the pH of the chrome solution increased from 2.5 to 3.8, the PS of CTA increased from 982 nm to 2899 nm, 1265 nm to 3384 nm and 1289 nm to 3630 nm, respectively, showing a rapid increasing tendency. Correspondingly, due to the PS of CTA increased, the chromium absorption rate increased from 31.0% to 53.6% at 25°C, 33.8% to 55.9% at 30°C and 34.5% to 56.4% at 35°C, whilst the uniformity of the chromium distribution in crust leather was gradually reduced. At the same initial tanning temperature, the shrinkage temperature (Ts) of wet blue tend to increase first and then decrease with the increase of the CTA’s PS, and reached above 100°C when the PS was in a range from 2000 nm-2700 nm. As the PS continues to increase, the inner layer was insufficient tanned due to excessive tanning of surface, leading to a decrease in hydrothermal stability of crust leather. This investigation was performed for four formulations consisting of collagen-stabilizing agents (oxazolidine E, resorcinol, nano alumina, and nano silica) and an antioxidant agent (Songnox 1010) in the acidic environment. The compounds were applied to 19th-century leathers with a brush. The properties of the leathers before and after treatment and accelerated aging were determined by measuring pH, shrinkage temperature, and color and conducting ATR-FTIR and FORS. For accelerated aging, the samples were exposed to an atmosphere with 95ppm SO2, 40°C, and 51% relative humidity for 14 days. The results showed that all of the tested formulations slowed down the acid degradation process. The combined use of collagen stabilizing agents provided good treatment properties and adding Songnox 1010 antioxidant agent to this combination further enhanced the effect of treatment. Among the tested formulations, the one containing oxazolidine+resorcinol+nano alumina+S1010 provided the best properties for controlling acid degradation.
