The review begins with a brief overview of natural alizarin and its occurrence in Rubiaceae family plants, followed by a discussion of alizarin acquisition from its botanical sources through conventional and advanced extraction methods. A special emphasis of this study is on the identification of natural alizarin colourants in archaeological and cultural textiles by using analytical methods based on reflectance, Raman spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and chromatographic profiles. In addition, the functional properties of natural alizarin, including its antimicrobial activity, anti-oxidant activity, insect repellence and ultraviolet protection, are analysed. This paper summarises the methods for obtaining alizarin for coloration, as well as advanced techniques for detecting alizarin in historical textiles, and potential applications of natural alizarin as a functional textile dye. Two results are reported that provide new insights into ancient polychromy. Firstly, high-performance liquid chromatography results, in combination with historical information, indicate that insect species of cochineal, most probably Porphyrophora hamelii Brandt, was used in Hellenistic objects. Secondly, madder detected in the archaeological samples contains high amounts of purpurin (alizarin is either not detected or detected in trace). This relative composition, which is recorded using the hydrochloric acid method for dyestuff extraction, is consistent with that prepared from wild madder (Rubia peregrina L.), which is a common plant in the Mediterranean region. ReliureIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : This study focuses on the evaluation and assessment of the condition of a deteriorated illuminated leather binding dated back to the Egyptian Mamluk period (1250-1517 H) at library of Mashiakht El-Azhar, Egypt. Some analytical techniques have been used in order to identify the decorative materials, evaluate the condition, and study deterioration mechanisms of this leather binding. Different microscopes (digital USB, stereomicroscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM) with Energy Dispersive X-Ray analysis (EDX) were used. Additionally, the analysis by portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) was used for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of elements in the golden layer. Moreover, pH measurement, and attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) analysis has been used to explain the chemical deterioration of historical leather and to identify the decorative agents. On the basis of investigation by different microscopes, the golden colour on the surface of historical leather cover has been gilded, and not painted. The results of investigation by microscopy for the illuminated and non-illuminated leather parts showed different signs of deterioration such as different kinds of cracks, holes, missing parts, detachment of some parts in the gold layer, fungal hyphae, accumulated dust, fragility of the gold layer etc. The elemental analysis by EDX and pXRF showed that the golden colour mainly consisted of brass with traces of elemental gold. Additionally, the elemental analysis revealed the presence of elemental sulfur which may be due to the air pollutants in the surrounding environmental conditions at Al-Azhar library, Egypt. The analysis by pH measurement and ATR-FTIR revealed that the leather cover suffered from acid hydrolysis mechanisms. Therefore, conservation procedures (conservation treatment and preventive conservation) are needed in the future work. Cuirs et peaux -- ConservationIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : A 14th century portolan chart on skin was examined for treatment. Examination produced information regarding Portolan charts in general and aspects of deterioration due to ageing and older restoration methods. Treatment methods are reviewed and à treatment is described. Mistaken identify of the substrate was overcome and a disturbing and disfiguring damage described : An appropriate treatment was designed but had to be modified as the initial : treatment progress was assessed. Given that only about 180 of these charts have survived to the present the manufacture, condition and preservation are of interest to scholars. Note de contenu : - Brief history of portolan charts

Détérioration fongiqueIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Fungal deterioration of ancient leather artifacts is a significant problem for museums and archives, as it might cause significant damage to the valuable cultural heritage. The growth of fungi on these artifacts is affected by such environmental factors as temperature, relative humidity, pH, and light exposure. The environmental factors that contribute to fungal growth and the impact fungi on the deterioration of ancient leather artifacts are discussed here. An overview is summarized on the strategies to prevent and control fungal deterioration, including the environmental control, the use of biocides, and conservation treatments, which is proposed to provide a valuable guidance for the preservation of ancient leather artifacts.
