We obtain expressions for the melt curtain shape, coating thickness, contact length, contact pressure, drawing force, apparent contact angle, and contact convexity. Specially constructed examples enable practitioners to apply the results without advanced training in fluid mechanics. We identify a process indeterminacy that arises in curtain coating employing a parallel slit. We show that, with a rapidly converging extrusion slit, this indeterminacy vanishes. Thus, a unique solution for the contact length is always obtained. The extension to a viscoelastic fluid is also briefly considered. Résistance aux tachesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : After thermoforming, plastic parts are stacked for shipping, and these parts tend to stick together. Called nesting, sheet stock is often first coated with a silicone compound before thermoforming to prevent this. The coating usually consists of a small amount of lubricant dispersed in a majority of carrier fluid, and this fluid must then dry before reaching the sheet winder or else the coating blotches. This coupling of coating and drying to determine when to expect blotching is examined. Roll coating involves a dimensionless group called the elasticity number that governs the thickness of the coating to be dried. The drying section involves the evaporation of the coating carrier fluid, and then diffusion into the dry surrounding atmosphere. When analyzing the drying, a new dimensionless group that governs blotching is discovered, called blotchability. The result of this analysis allows practitioners to determine which operating conditions cause blotching, and how to eliminate it. Roll coating uses a deflecting rubber roll to apply vanishingly thin coatings (≤1 μm), an interesting elastohydrodynamic problem. Note de contenu : - Avoiding applicator flooding

In this study, we derive a fifth-order nonlinear ordinary differential equation for the thickness of a Newtonian coating and for the corresponding blade deflection. After solving this equation numerically, a graph is produced to help engineers predict the coating thickness. We find that blade deflection and coating thickness are governed by the blade angle and by a new dimensionless group called the blade flexibility. For values of blade flexibility less than one, the coating thickness matches that of a rigid blade. The results of this analysis provide an engineer with the ability to design a flexible blade configuration to deliver the desired coating thickness onto a substrate. TubesIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : In large thick plastic pipe extrusion, the residence time in the cooling chamber is long, and the melt inside the pipe sags under its own weight, causing the product to thicken on the bottom (and to thin on the top). To compensate for sag, engineers normally shift the die centerpiece downward. This paper focuses on how this decentering triggers unintended consequences for elastic polymer melts. We employ eccentric cylindrical coordinates, to capture exactly the geometry of our problem, the flow between eccentric cylinders. Specifically, we arrive at an exact analytical expression for the axial and lateral forces on the die barrel using the polymer process partitioning approach, designed for elastic liquids. We choose the Oldroyd 8-constant framework due to its rich diversity of constitutive special cases. Since our main results are in a form of simple algebraic expression along with two sets of curves, they can thus be used not only by engineers, but any practitioner. We close our paper with detailed dimensional worked examples to help practitioners with their pipe die designs.
