RetannageIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Manufacturers or surface coatings, particularly white, have long relied upon the use of titanium dioxide as the prime pigment in their industry. In recent years two factors have combined to spur the search for an alternative material to replace titanium dioxide. These factors are, not too surprisingly, price and availability. Amongst a number of potential replacement materials a considerable development effort has been undertaken to produce a novel polymeric additive for this purpose. This development effort has resulted in a series of polymers that are significantly different from the "normal" emulsion polymers known up to now. This paper describes the basic characteristics of one such polymer. The polymer in question is principally used, at present, in retanning applications where it has found wider use than simply as a titanium replacement. Results of a comparative study are presented to demonstrate the advantages that application of this polymer have on the general characteristics of retanned leather. Traitement par irradiationIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : In an earlier paper it was demonstrated that electron beam irradiated fresh hide samples stored in a sealed container could be preserved for six months. In this work leather prepared from cattlehide samples preserved by electron beam irradiation was evaluated. Leather made from electron beam irradiation preserved cattlehides has a reduced tensile strength and ball burst compared to leather made from unirradiated hides but was comparable in subjective evaluations such as grain quality and break. It was established that the amount of irradiation required for effective preservation could be reduced by pretreatment of the hide with a bactericide. The results also suggest that the area yield of leather from irradiated hides is similar to the area yield of fresh hides. Note de contenu : - Sample preparation

The product has been characterized by F.T.I.R., F.T.N.M.R., gel permeation chromatography and joyce loebl disc centrifuge for particle size. This cationomer has been used in the processing of chrome tanned sheep, full grain, semianiline dark brown nappa, 0.6-0.8 m/m leather. The product on application to the leather was found to be polishable since this P.U. cationomer contains not only a urethane linkage but also a carbiimino linkage. Curing can be achieved by either ultraviolet or electron beam irradiation. In contrast to conventional methods, complete finish application is obtained rapidly, without the use of heating ovens, and with no air pollution. Patent leather produced by this process exhibits good gloss and flexibility and excellent abrasion resistance. Flexibility was affected by the type and amount of crosslinking agent incorporated into the coating as well as by the acrylated urethane oligomer used as the coating backbone. The effects of varying the formulation on final finish properties are discussed. Note de contenu : - TABLE I : Variation of gloss with coating thickness

The digestions were carried out at 40°C for 3 hours and then at 60°C for 1 hour. Up to 87% of the available fat was recovered as well as a readily separated protein hydrolyzate fraction. Chemical analysis demonstrated that the fat contained 0,2-6,0% free fatty acid content depending on the treatment. The results suggest that with a small investment in enzymes a good quality fat can be produced from fleshings which will convert a solid waste disposal problem into a value-added by-product. TannageIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : Acrylic Resin Tanning (ART) has been carried out successfully at our laboratory. The results obtained by using IR, DSC, X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy and dynamic viscoelastic spectroscopy to examine retanned and non-retanned specimens showed that ART coordinated with the chromium of chrome leather by its own carboxyl groups, that ART made peak 2 of DSC's curves disappear and that leather fibres retanned by ART, due to the filling effect of ART on the fibres, produced leather which felt soft and round. Cuirs et peaux de kangourousIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Some physical properties are compared for chrome tanned leather made from the skins of both sexes of Red and Grey Kangaroo. The skins of Grey Kangaroos produce thicker leather than the skins of Red Kangaroos and therefore, where breaking loads for the various treatments are concerned, leather from Grey Kangaroos is usually stronger than that from Red Kangaroos and leather from the skins of males is stronger than that from females. However, if the effect of thickness is removed by comparison of the relevant tensile strength properties, leather made from the skins of males or females is approximately equivalent, while leather from Grey Kangaroos is still stronger than that from Red Kangaroos. On average, the area of leather from both Grey and Red Kangaroos does not differ, but males of both species are approximately 20% greater in area than females. Skins of both species and of both sexes produce thicker leather as the skin area increases. Teinture -- DéfautsIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Dissolved dyes were recommended for use in effect finishes for patent leather in Europe in the sixties. Solvent-soluble dyestuffs (vat dyes) were mainly used for this despite their very poor fastness to migration.
During the same period, dyestuffs dissolved in organic solvents (usually DMF) were used in aqueous finishes. This dyeing method came from USA. In the sixties, Dr. Luch and his colleagues developed a system of liquid dyestuffs wich were suitable for both aqueous and organic finishes. At the same time a dyeing technique was developed which was similar to the padding process commonly used to dyes textiles. The leather was dyed in a through-feed machine. Dissolved metal complex dyes with a low salt content, which produced lighfast dyed aniline leather, were used in this process. The problems of this type of dyeing were very obvious. It was virtually impossible to obtain fastness to migration and fastness to perspiration/water spotting at the same time.Note de contenu : - Liquid metal complex dyes

Crowther, Auteur Année de publication : 1989 Article en page(s) : p. 184-199 Note générale : Appendix Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Computer color match prediction (C.C.M.P.) systems predict accurate recipes provided that all preconditions are met. The major constraint limiting wider application of C.C.M.P. is inconsistency in the substrate itself. If substrate variability is so great that each leather must be individually calibrated, the work involved in calibration dyeings outweighs the benefits of rapid recipe-formulation.
Towards limiting the variable dyebility of different substrates, the ionic-charge on three leather types was investigated by an indicator method. This permitted Iso Electric Point (I.E.P.) to be estimated. Subsequent evaluation of dyeing correlated well with the I.E.P. When the I.E.P. of the three substrates differences in build-up was greatly reduced. It is believed that this work points towards methods of standardising the dyeability of substrates and hence wider application of C.C.M.P.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1PtrRWl6PkOwNnyuOtV3gk5IUc4DIMP8z/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=17303

Corey, Auteur ; George Graber, Auteur Année de publication : 1989 Article en page(s) : p. 245-249 Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act prohibits interstate distribution in the United States of articles, including animal feeds and ingredients that are adulterated (e.g., unsafe) and misbranded. Under this statute a food additive means any substance whose intended use (direct or indirect) may result in its becoming a component or affecting the characteristics of food. A substance considered generally recognized as safe (GRAS) is not a food additive. A food additive is considered unsafe unless its safety has been demonstrated and a regulation published by the FDA. Hydrolysed leather meal (21 CFT 573.540) is regulated as a food additive for use in swine feed due primarily to its chromium content. Clearence of new ingredients is discussed. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The adhesions among the fibers od dried calfskin were examined by measuring the acoustical pulses emitted when the skin was stretched. The rate of emission of the pulses and their energies were determined. The frequency distributions of the pulse amplitudes comprised spectra that were similar in shape for skin that had been dried from acetone, petroleum ether, and petroleum ether containing fatliquor. The separate contributions from the ruptures of adhesions and of fibers to these spectra were analyzed and related to the lubrification of the fibers by fatliquor. The method promises to be helpful in elucidating and following changes in fiber adhesion in tanning, drying, impregnation, filling, and finishing, and might serve as the basis of a field test in leather drying. Tannage Résumé : The ability of anaerobic microbial populations to adapt to high sodium chloride concentrations was investigated. It was found that a sodium chloride (NaCl) concentration of up to 17.000 mg/L had no inhibitory effects on the anaerobic digestion process. There were no notable differences in digester performance relative to a control with the exception of an increase in the methane content of the biogas. These results suggest, therefore, that the concentration of NaCl present in tannery wastewaters, which ranges from 2.500 to 12.500 mg/L, would have no significant effect on an acclimatized anaerobic digester treating these wastes. Tannage Résumé : A matched-side comparison has been carried out between a one-bath and a two-bath unhairing system, using 8 sides per treatment. After unhairing separately the sides were chrome tanned, retanned and fatliquored together.
Comparison of the physical properties of the crust leathers showed that the two unhairing systems gave very similar and acceptable results. However, the leathers produced from the two-bath unhairing system showed definite advantages as far as grain cleanliness, lime draw and growth marks were concerned. Slightly firmer leather was obtained from the two-bath system, with a correspondingly tighter grain break. It is felt that the softness aspect can easily be corrected by slight adjustments to the post-tanning operations.
This trial has shown that the age-old saying that "Leather is made in the beamhouse" is still valid and warrants reinvestigation by tanners who wish to improve on the grain quality of their raw material.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Beamhouse operations - Chrome tanning

Tannage Résumé : The variation of physical properties with direction of testing at each of four positions is assessed on chrome tanned hair-on and chrome tanned unhaired kangaroo leather. The properties evaluated were tensile strenght, elongation, tear load, tear strenght and thickness of the leather, and the areas sampled were neck, belly, leg and rump. It is shown that these properties have greater directional asymmetry in neck and rump than in the belly or leg regions. The neck of kangaroo skin is the thinnest of the areas sampled while the rump is the thickest. Also, these properties do not correlate with the order of values found at the same positions on bovine skin. Kangaroo skin is bilaterally symmetrical. Tannage végétalIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : The percentages of tannins in four common Acacia species, A. berlandieri, A. farnesiana, A. greggii, and A. rigula and the efficacy of these tannins for the production of leather have been determined.
Tannins were extracted with 70% acetone-water. Hide samples were treated in the conventional manner and suspended in tannin solutions. Tannins from A. farnesiana, A. berlandieri and A. rigidula penetrated the hide in 9 days and grave acceptable color. The yields of leather were best for A. rigidula and A. greggii. Water-soluble portions of the aqueous-acetone extracts of wattle. Tannins from A. greggii occur in too small amounts to be useful and have some undesirable properties.
Because of the widespread distribution and abundance of these plants, they may have potential as sources for commercial tannins.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Plant materials - Extraction of bulk collections - Solubilization of the insoluble fractions - Determination of tannin content and other parameters - Tanning of hide samples En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ehdoJhpP4rYFy_mhBVqFTeke5b_ch0Db/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=17369

TannageIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : The effect of chrome, aluminium and vegetable tanning on the properties of hair-on kangaroo leather is evaluated using matched sides. Allowing for the known differences in the leather from the two sexes and species (Red and grey kangaroos), it is shown that aluminium or chrome tanning produce similar physical properties in the leader but, as expected, vegetable tanning gives leather with physical properties showing lower strength and elongation values than those of chrome tanning. This may be the result of not optimising the fatliquor levels for the vegetable-tanned leather.
