The surface needs to be prepared sa as to remove contaminants that would detract the adhesion of the coating. However, there are one type of surface coating system that is used in quite opposite manner. These coatings are called gelcoats. Revêtements:PeintureIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The principle of intumescence (swelling and charring in the presence of fire) is gaining importance beyond its traditional fields of application while a larger effort is done by fire scientists and chemists to fine effective alternatives to halogenated flame retardants. Originally discovered in the 60s, this technology was used on a larger scale since the 80s for the fire protection of steel and wood structures. Later, waterborne and halogen-free formulations became available.
This paper presents novel results, obtained in two European projects, on the application of intumescent coatings to improve reaction to fire of polymers. Two systems, based on different intumescent coatings applied on PE and HIPS, will be shown to achieve very high levels of flame retardancy, while being halogen-free and very low VOC.
