The most promising and commonly used method to enhance/improve the adhesion of coatings is the use of small amounts of coupling agents in the formulations. Silanes are a group of adhesion promoters. Their functions and findings of research workers have been discussed in an earlier review. In the present review, the findings on the use of promoters other than silanes which are considered as new classes of adhesion promoters, have been discussed. The general observations on the performance of these promoters described in a tabular form may serve as guidelines in selecting the suitable adhesion promoters. Both the chemical nature of the initiator and the polymerization conditions greatly influence the efficiency of the polymerization and the final resin properties. The effect was examined of change in side chain group in azo initiator with replacement of nitrile group to isobutyrate group with no major change in initiator half-life temperature, on the viscosity, solubility and MWD of acrylic resins produced by solution polymerization using them. Best solution in wide range of solvents, ranging from aromatic - ester - aliphatic solvent class, was achieved with 2,2'-azobis(methyl isobutyrate) v/s selected azonitrile initiators and its versatility was seen for preparing a range of resins with low MW, narrow polydispersity, low viscosity and reduced volatiles. Work was also reported on comparing the azo initiator efficiency og 2,2'-azobis ( methyl-isobutyrate) v/s alkyl perester initiator, tert-butyl perbenzoate and tert-butyl perisononanoate. Weathering performance of acrylic/isocyanate clear coasts using resins prepared with some of the initiators is reported. The reduction in molecular weight helps to achieve application viscosity by an increase in free volume. Various polyurethane polyols have been synthesised by reacting the diols with polyisocyanates. The molecular weight and polydispersity indexes of these polyols have been determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The viscosity of 50%. polyol solutions in various solvents has been determined at different temperatures. The temperature dependence on viscosity of solution of these polyols has been determined by the Williams, Landel and Ferry (WLF) equation. The non-linear regression analysis has been solved by using Levenberg Marquardt's algorithm. It is found that non-linear regression analysis gives high correlation coefficients and very low overall residual errors. The variation in the values of constants A and B for each WLF equation in the polyol solution indicates that these constants are system dependent. The values of constants A and B obtained for polyurethane polyols in a particular solvent have been used to calculate the values of glass transition temperature of the oligomer solution (Tg,) at different concentrations. The values of Tg, are found to vary with concentration. As the concentration of polymer increases there is an increase in the Tg, value. The tensile properties and resistance to scratch of resins prepared using these polyols and butylated melamine formaldehyde are better than those of conventional resins. The VOC content of these coating formulations is lower than the value prescribed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Although water-based and free radical radiation curing systems are the best known alternatives, a third technology-cationic UV curing - is being explored by the UK's ink research association, Pira. The results to date are very promising, reports David Atkinson, in an article in the July 1995 issue of Polymers Paint Colour Journal. Note de contenu : - Water based systems
