Tannage Résumé : The retanning process plays an important role in optimizing the leather’s colour, levelness, softness, fullness, and hydrophobicity. Polymer retanning agents are important materials for this process. The present study used maleic anhydride modified castor oil (MCO), PEG1000 (polyethylene glycol) and IPDI (isophorone diisocyanate) as main materials to synthesize polyurethane microemulsions (MC-PURs) and employed them to retan chrometanned leathers. The hydroxyl functionality of MCO was investigated by chemical and 1HNMR analysis, and confirmed to be about 2.0. The chemical structures of MCO, prepolymer and MC-PUR were characterized by IR.
The optimized synthesis formulation and polyurethane microemulsion MC-PUR3 for MC-PURs as retanning agent was selected by comparing the properties of retanned leathers, such as softness, fullness, grain tightness, tensile strength, extension at break, depth of shade, waterproof properties et al. Then, MC-PUR3 was characterized by means of DSC, TG/DTG and TEM techniques. Taille des particulesIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Using natural dyes rather than synthetic dyes is an option that can be pursued to achieve sustainability in leather dyeing. The main disadvantage of natural dyeing is poor wet and dry rub fastness and the requirements of metal mordants for fixing. In this work, onion peel waste is the chosen raw material to produce natural dye for leather dyeing without metal mordant. Adding commercial syntans and vegetable tannins with the onion peel dye in the post tanning process produces good quality dyed leather without using any mordants. The optimal particle size of eco-friendly onion peel dye was extracted from onion peel (Allium cepa) using a modified aqueous extraction method. The extracted dye was examined by various instrumental techniques to characterize the functional groups by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), optical properties by UV-VIS spectrophotometry, size by Malvern Instruments, and thermal stability by Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA). The results express the suitability for application in the leather dyeing process. Tannage Résumé : Dialdehyde starches with different aldehyde content from native corn starch were prepared by sodium periodate oxidation to be used as a tanning agent in leather making. For this purpose, native corn starch was oxidized with sodium metaperiodate in different molar ratios. After oxidation processes, the yields, solubility in water and aldehyde contents of the obtained dialdehyde starches were determined as well as structure characterizations by Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and Gel Permeation Chromatography. Evaluating the gel permeation chromatography data, the dialdehyde starch samples which were thought to be in appropriate molecular weight/size to penetrate into skin fibers were selected to be used in the tanning process. Their tanning abilities were evaluated by investigating hydrothermal stabilities, filling and fiber isolation characteristics and physical properties determined by mechanical tests and organoleptically. From the evaluation of the results, it was revealed that sodium metaperiodate oxidized starches which have appropriate molecular weight and adequate aldehyde content has a remarkable tanning effect and can be utilized as a tanning agent with the advantages of not necessitating pickling process which means saving time and simplifying the production but more importantly offering an important advantage from an environmental point of view. Tannage Résumé : Vegetable tanned leathers with good embossing, air permeability, natural look and pleasing firm handle properties have applied in many goods with multiple uses. However, the performances of vegetable tanned leathers still need a further improvement. In this work, a kind of nonionic gemini aliphatic polyurethane surfactants (GPUs) with different hydrophobic chain lengths as a retanning agent combined with polyacrylic acid (PAA) for condensed tannin tanned leathers to improve their performances. The effects of the alone or combined use of the PAA and GPU, the hydrophobic chain length of GPU, and the offer percentage of retanning agent were studied by evaluating the organoleptic properties, shrinkage temperature, mechanical properties of the obtained leathers. The best performance was found in the leather retanned with PAA and 12-GPU-550 complex retanning agent, and the mechanical properties of leather could be improved when the total offer percentage was controlled at 4 wt%. Moreover, the collagen fibers morphologies and lightfastness properties of leathers retanned with different retanning agents were investigated. The results showed that the total color difference ΔE and the yellowness index Δb decreased significantly with the introduction of 12-GPU-550, and the leather retanned with PAA and 12-GPU-550 complex retanning agent showed the lowest value of ΔE, demonstrating that the lightfastness properties were improved significantly. Therefore, it was an attractive way to combine use of PAA and 12-GPU-550 as complex retanning agent, which can improve the mechanical and lightfastness properties of vegetable tanned leathers simultaneously. Hides subjected to a dressing for gloves.
The research have shown a significant correlation between features, assessed sensory and instrumental. In the case of investigational leathers elasticity were significantly correlated with fullness in touch. It also showed the relationship between the hardness measured instrumentally, and softness and toughness evaluated organoleptically. The measurement results of texture parameters show that can be objectively assess and compare features, which are usually defined by our senses such as hardness, elasticity and flexibility.Note de contenu : - FIGURES : 1.
