Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Precision printing of particulate slurries with particle sizes of 5–20 µm using an indirect gravure printing, specifically with pad printing technology, offers interesting applications of functional printing on 3D surfaces. We present our results for printed electroluminescent panels (EL), where printing inks containing luminescent and dielectric particles of such comparatively huge size are transferred from a gravure printing form with gravure patterns not much larger than the particles. Compared with screen printing, the benefit of pad printing is that fairly complex and corrugated surfaces of 3D printed bodies can be endowed with a particulate functional surface. We demonstrated this using commercially available materials for electroluminescent panels. From the electrical point of view, EL panels are capacitors with a luminescent and insulation layer which enables a careful investigation of the printed surface by the characterization of their electrical and optical performance. We emphasize that the printing process we developed is not restricted to EL panels but could also be used for printing protective, electrochemically active, or radiation absorbing metal or metal oxide coatings to 3D printed fused deposition modeling polymer bodies. Printing parameters such as pad hardness, printing velocities, and pad surface tension are investigated. Further, we consider the relation between the printing process, the thickness of the insulation layer, the volume fraction of particulate BaTiO3 in this layer, and EL panel luminance. Our pad printed EL panels, using adapted ink formulations, achieved average luminance of 140 cd/m2 on curved surfaces which also corresponds to the performance standards of conventional screen printed panels. Spectroscopie RamanIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Lithium ion batteries are used extensively in electronic devices as well as hybrid and electric vehicles. The anode electrode layer in the battery can be fabricated by coating an aqueous dispersion of carbon, binder, and additives, and then drying. During manufacturing, the distribution of the binder through the coating thickness can become nonuniform, which compromises the properties and performance of the battery. In this study, a quantitative method to analyze the binder distribution in the electrode during drying was established. A drying apparatus with an integrated analytic balance and surface-temperature measurement was used to prepare specimens. At specific time points during drying, specimens were removed from the apparatus, quickly frozen, and then freeze-dried. Raman spectroscopy was then used to measure the binder concentration at different points through the cross section of the freeze-dried electrode coating. Scanning electron microscopy was also used to explore the changing microstructure qualitatively. Using a model electrode formulation, the method demonstrated different binder distributions for electrodes dried at 150°C under airflow and room temperature, 20°C, with no airflow. The results also showed continued changes in distribution in the interior of the coating as drying continued. RotogravureIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : This paper presents a novel method for printing thick silver electrodes with high fidelity using a rotogravure technique and high-viscosity silver ink. The widths and thicknesses of the printed electrodes were investigated with respect to the printing angle and printing speed. In addition, the use of a low-surface-energy polyethylene terephthalate substrate was found to decrease the ink transfer for printing angles of up to 60°, possibly because of the small adhesive force at the interface between the ink and substrate. We therefore employed substrates with higher surface energies, namely polyimide and treated polyimide, to enhance the ink transfer. A lower printing speed of 0.5 m/min and high viscosity of 15 Pa·s are required to obtain better functionality with a lower resistivity. However, using the proposed method, the fidelities of the printed patterns were achieved even with a high printing speed of 10.5 m/min using the high viscosity of 15 Pa·s, necessitating a subsequent sintering process. Therefore, the printed pattern was sintered in an oven at 350°C for 10 min. Patterned silver electrodes 1 m in length, 121 ± 2.2 μm in line width, 6.5 ± 2.2 μm in average thickness, and with a resultant resistivity of 9 µΩ·cm were achieved. The findings of this study confirm the potential of rotogravure printing for fabricating thick electrodes with high fidelity for flexible printed circuit boards with large areas.

Index. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : In this study, polydimethylsiloxane and graphene were used to fabricate surface electrodes for electrocardiographic (ECG) sensing. A simple and inexpensive method was developed to fabricate graphene-based polymer films. In this method, graphene was inlaid in polydimethylsiloxane by polymer infiltration. The polymer films were successfully used in ECG measurements and performed as well as conventionnal silver/silver chloride wet electrodes. Few motion artifacts were observed with the graphene films when body postures were changed and during walking. The presented approach is low-cost and suitable for mass production, holding great promise in fabricating polymer electrodes for medical monitoring.
