Cuirs et peaux de chèvresIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The studies assessed the strength of leathers in terms of their use for the production of selected grades of soft leather made from 21 F crossbreeds kid : a local breed of white goats (PB) upgraded by bucks of boer breed (B) - (PB x B), (PB) goats upgraded by Nubian bucks (N) - (PB x N) and a control group of upgraded white breed.
Ten-month old kid leather crossbreeds from crossing white goats up graded by bucks of boer and nubian breeds have the required values of strength and sensory characteristics desirable for the production of gloves and clothing. Leather PB x B crossbreeds had lower tensile strength than that determined as adequate by the standard for leather clothing. Kid leather PB x N exhibited greater resistance to tearing relative to other groups through a thicker reticular layer, which predisposes them for use as shoe uppers.Note de contenu : - Table I : Quantitative traits and parameters of skin surface efficiency

Cuirs et peaux de moutonsIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Understanding the performance and behavior of garment leathers provides valuable inputs for the design and fabrication of the leather apparel. Drape is one of the important properties associated with garment construction and appeal. Studies on the drape of garment leathers are scarce. In this work, drape coefficient was measured for sheep nappa leather and compared with mechanical properties, which influence the garment construction such as flexural rigidity, softness, weight, thickness, initial tensile modulus and formability. The mean drape coefficient was calculated in the range of 45 to 54% for the selected sheep nappa leathers from four different firms. Flexural rigidity, softness, weight and initial tensile modulus (across backbone direction) have been shown to have considerable influence on the drape coefficient. On the other hand, thickness and formability do not bear a significant relationship to drape coefficient. The results of this study can be used as an elementary tool for leather selection to facilitate the design and construction of apparel. RetannageIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : Amino resins have played an important role in the manufacture of leather due to their outstanding filling and dyeing properties. However, a traditionally prepared amino resin usually contains free formaldehyde, which is strictly restricted in leather products. With increasing awareness of potential health problems with formaldehyde, there is a growing demand for formaldehyde-free leathers in the global leather market. In this study, a formaldehyde-free amino resin was synthesized by using glyoxal as condensing agent, and its retanning properties were investigated. It was found that the glyoxal can be used to replace formaldehyde to synthesize an amino resin, and the optimal reaction conditions were that the molar ratio of melamine to glyoxal was 1:6, reaction temperature was 333K and reaction time was 3 hours.
Retanning experiments with the prepared amino resin indicated that its retanning properties, including fullness, softness, general appearance of the leather and mechanical strength, are better or equal to those that of a traditionally prepared amino resin.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE : Materials - Preparation of MG - Characterization of MG - FTIR analysis

Transparence (optique)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : For preparing a new kind of leather with transmittance and softness at the same time, glycerol was used to treat delimed and bleached split pelt. The softness, transmittance and mechanical properties were tested to evaluate the performance of soft and transparent leather (STL). FT-IR, SEM, XRD, DSC and TG were used to character the structure of STL and reveal the basic principle of STL manufacturing. The results showed that 25% glycerol based on limed pelt weight could make leather soft and transparent simultaneously. Pig pelt was more suitable for thin and transparent leather while cattle split was better for uniform and clear leather. Glycerol combined with collagen through multipoint hydrogen bonds, and the combination had slight positive effect on improving STL thermal stability. Fiber bundles of STL trended to disperse and collagen hierarchical structure including triple helix remained during transparent treatment. The soft and transparent leather could be a new choice for leather goods designers and might be a selectable substrate for high-performance electronic skin.

Tannage végétalIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Adobe-type (hardened) manure attached to bovine hair is a major source of meat contamination, hide quality deterioration, and devalued leather products. Therefore, it is important to develop cleaning solutions that can rapidly remove adobe-type manure to improve the quality of hides delivered to tanners for leather processing. Oxidative chemicals such as sodium percarbonate (SPC) have been used as an environmentally friendly alternative to dehair bovine hides in 1-4 hours. In this study, we do not aim to dehair the hide with SPC, but to weaken and shorten the hair enough to remove the adobe-type manure from the hide in under 30 minutes. Our formula substantially removed adobe-type manure in less than 30 minutes using a combination of SPC and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) as a soaking solution in a tumbling drum. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy showed the oxidation of cystine disulfide bridges in keratin, the structural protein of hair, indicating that our formula weakened the hair after treatment. A decrease in hair diameter, or hair shortening, was also observed with Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis after treatment of the hides with our formula. Our environmentally friendly formula for oxidatively removing adobe-type manure is a viable option to enhance both meat and hide quality.
