DésorptionIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Preservation of animal skins by conventional salt or brine curing methods leads to environmental pollution. Controlled drying up to acceptable moisture levels could be an effective, cleaner and environmentally friendly alternative for skin preservation. The selection of optimum storage and drying conditions requires the knowledge of moisture desorption isotherms. Hence this work focuses on the experimental determination of desorption isotherms for south Indian sheep and goat skins at three different temperatures 30, 40 and 45°C. The goodness of fit of four sorption models to experimental results was determined. Of the models tested, the modified Oswin gave the best fit followed by modified Halsey. Modified Henderson and modified Chung Pfost models showed relatively larger deviations from the experimental values. The deviation was larger in sheep skins compared to goat skins. The net isosteric heat of sorption was determined for both sheep and goat skins using the Clausius - Clapeyron equation and is expressed mathematically as an empirical polynomial function of equilibrium moisture content. The net isosteric heat of sorption for sheep skin was higher than the goat skin. Vitamine EIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Microbial colorants are becoming popular because they have the potential to overcome disadvantages of synthetic and natural dyes. However, for commercialization, their after dyeing characteristics especially light fastness needs to be improved preferably using natural agents to make the complete dyeing process eco-benign. Therefore, in this study, eco-friendly tannins and antioxidants were employed to improve the light fastness of wet blue goat nappa skin dyed with the colorant of Penicillium minioluteum. Their effect on color strength, fastness properties, and mechanical strength were also assessed. As a result, the only sample treated with tannic acid before dyeing showed moderate light fastness with improved perspiration, tear, and tensile strength. Further improvement in light fastness was recorded when tannic acid treated and dyed sample was padded with vitamin E - gum acacia emulsion (10% vitamin E, 10% glycerol, 4.5% gum acacia powder). Here, improvement in perspiration and rub fastness was also noticed. Sels de sodiumIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The salt preservation method has been used for a long time in the leather industries with salt applied to raw skins and hides in order to control bacterial activity and to remove the moisture found in the skin structure. It is known that the salt used in curing process contains many halophilic bacterial species.
During the salting process, skins and hides might be contaminated with these micro-organisms. The goal of this research was to determine factors including the pH of salt samples, total count of haloversatile bacteria, proteolytic haloversatile bacteria, and lipolytic haloversatile bacteria found in these samples and to isolate, and identify haloversatile bacteria from the salt samples, to test their ability to use various amino acid and sugar sources, to characterise their enzymatic properties, to investigate their adverse effects on sheepskinand goatskin samples using a scanning electron microscopy. In addition, 2.5A direct electric current was applied against mixed culture of enzyme-producing haloversatile bacteria in 15% NaCl solution to search for an alternative environmentally friendly preservation method for skin/hide curing. The pH values of salt samples were found to be between 7.60 and 8.04.
The total counts of haloversatile bacteria, proteolytic haloversatile bacteria and lipolytic haloversatile bacteria were found to be 6 × 103CFU/g to 1.3 × 105CFU/g; 1×103-7×103CFU/g and 1.4 × 103-3.1 × 104CFU/g, respectively. 35 haloversatile bacteria belonging to ten different genera (Staphylococcus, Corynebacterium, Peribacillus, Lysinibacillus, Kocuria, Paenibacillus, Bhargavaea, Bacillus, Pseudomonas and Micrococcus) were isolated and identified from the salt samples.
The ability of haloversatile bacteria to use sugars and amino acids varied from one genus to another genus. While catalase, esterase, urease, protease, caseinase, lipase, xylanase, cellulase, amylase, DNase and oxidase enzymes were produced among the isolates, pullulanase enzyme was not produced. The scanning electron microscope micrographs showed that enzyme-producing haloversatile bacteria had significant effects on goatskin and sheepskin. The total number of the mixed culture was reduced from 3.6 × 106CFU/mL to 4×101CFU/mL within 17 minutes, and all cells were completely killed within 21 minutes.

Tannage Résumé : A new pretanning agent (HTPA) for high exhaustion chrome tannage 2,4-di-(1-hydroxymethyl-1, 2, 4-triazole-5-thione)-1,5-phthalic acid and 2,5-di-(1-hydroxymethyl-1, 2, 4-triazole-5-thione) -1,4-phthalic acid, has been synthesized from pyromellitic dianhydride and thiosemicarbazide. Its reaction with pelts and its effect on chrome uptake have been studied by applying it to delimed sheepskins and goatskins. The results show that HTPA reacts mainly with the amino groups in collagen to form crosslinks and that the reaction depends on the pH, temperature, time and amount of HTPA. Pelt pretanned with HTPA possesses a higher shrinkage temperature than control pelts. Subsequent chrome tanning results in a significant increase in chromium uptake, thus the chrome offer in conventional chrome tanning can be reduced significantly. The handle and the physical properties of pretanned crust leather are not too different from those of control crust leather. In this work, a series of nonionic short-chain fluorinated surfactants (Fn-Fn, where n = 2, 4, or 6) were successfully prepared and used as fatliquoring auxiliaries in the fatliquoring process of chrome-tanned goat skin. The chemical structure of these nonionic short-chain fluorinated surfactants was characterized by FTIR and the molecular weight was determined by GPC. The surface tension measurement results revealed that these three fluorinated surfactants showed excellent surface activities. The effect of type and dosage of Fn-Fn as well as fatliquoring temperature on fatliquoring properties of chrome-tanned goat skin were estimated by the softness and physical mechanical properties characteristic of resultant leather. The results revealed that the leather treated with 1 wt% F4-F4 at the fatliquoring temperature of 40oC showed the best overall performance, whose softness and physical mechanical properties were improved significantly. Moreover, the collagen fiber morphology and waterproof performance of leather treated with Fn-Fn were also investigated which showed that the addition of Fn-Fn in the fatliquoring process could promote the loosening of collagen fibers while effectively enhancing the water repellency of the leather surface. Therefore, such types of nonionic short-chain fluorinated surfactants are promising to be as desired fatliquoring auxiliaries in the leather industry.
