In their basic form both systems offer certain advantages, and these can be generalised, nevertheless, modifications can raise the performance of both systems so that differentiation is less clear. Leather samples, without treatment and treated in a vacuum, were submitted to an accelerated aging at 100°C for 72 hours. In order to evaluate the efficacy of treatment, leather characteristics were examined before and after treatment with dimethyl silicone oil and after accelerated aging. Colorimetry, ATR-FTIR spectroscopy, shrinkage temperature measurement and differential scanning calorimetry were used to examine the leather characteristics and the effectiveness and stability of treatment. The results revealed that the dimethyl silicone oil has a suitable performance in the treatment of dry leather. The results also showed that the use of dimethyl silicone oil significantly reduces the changes in leather during accelerated aging. In other words, dimethyl silicone oil treatment improves the leather stability against deterioration. Note de contenu : - Leather treatment and accelerated aging

Température de retraitIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : This study investigated the performance of several new formulations for the treatment of acid degradation in historic leathers made with condensed tannins. This investigation was performed for four formulations consisting of collagen-stabilizing agents (oxazolidine E, resorcinol, nano alumina, and nano silica) and an antioxidant agent (Songnox 1010) in the acidic environment. The compounds were applied to 19th-century leathers with a brush. The properties of the leathers before and after treatment and accelerated aging were determined by measuring pH, shrinkage temperature, and color and conducting ATR-FTIR and FORS. For accelerated aging, the samples were exposed to an atmosphere with 95ppm SO2, 40°C, and 51% relative humidity for 14 days. The results showed that all of the tested formulations slowed down the acid degradation process. The combined use of collagen stabilizing agents provided good treatment properties and adding Songnox 1010 antioxidant agent to this combination further enhanced the effect of treatment. Among the tested formulations, the one containing oxazolidine+resorcinol+nano alumina+S1010 provided the best properties for controlling acid degradation. Shelly, Auteur ; Divya Pasapulati, Auteur ; Palanisamy Thanikaivelan, Auteur ; Biyu Peng, Auteur ; Clinton Hodges, Auteur Année de publication : 2009 Article en page(s) : p. 194-203 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The attributes and physical properties of pelts and leather from selected hair sheep crossbreeds were assessed. Four different sheep breed classes (from Rambouillet, Dorpcroix, Barbados and Dorper), each with about 20 individuals, were included. Spanish goats were used as a control. Animals were raised and finished under identical conditions and flayed pelts were enumerated and processed to finished leather by commercial firms. Pelts and leathers were evaluated at Texas Tech for stretch, softness, fullness, grade, tensile strength, % elongation at break, stiffness, softness (negative slope angle), area yield, hair pore count, grain-to-corium thickness ratio and hide substance (Kjeldahl). Organoleptic and instrumental analysis results are presented and correlated. An objective scoring criterion is proposed. Comparisons across the breed classes are made. Outstanding and/or noteworthy performance scores are noted and recommendations for end-use applications are given. Wet-blue (tannage)Peau tannée au chrome (le chrome donne une couleur bleue)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Five flame retardants obtained as commercial products or prepared by the laboratory, including amino sulfonic ammonium [sulphamic acid], borax, ammonium polyphosphate, pentaerythritol-dihydrogenphosphate bisestermelamine and phosphated amino resin, were selected to treat wet blue pig. A unified treatment process was used with type and dosage of flame retardant as the two running parameters. The flammability of the leather was tested by two methods - vertical flame test (ALCA Method E 50) and oxygen index test method (ASTM D 2863-74). Besides the fire-safety characteristics, other physical and mechanical properties of leather samples, such as tensile strength, tear strength, breaking stretch [elongation], thickness, Ts, etc. were also evaluated. The results indicate that all of the above flame retardants can enhance the flame resistance of leather.
According to the oxygen index (OI) value of the leather samples treated with different flame retardants (12%), the performance of flame retardants on leather can be ranked as : ammonium polyphosphate > borax > phosphated amino resin > pentaerythritol-dihydrogenphosphate bisester-melamine > amino sulfonic ammonium [sulphamic acid]. The results of vertical flammability test indicate that all the tested flame-retardant chemicals can improve the fire resistance of leather and that, ammonium polyphosphate is the best flame retardant at the dosage of 12%. The results of the mechanical properties tests show that all these chemicals, except pentaerythritoldihydrogenphosphate bisester-melamine, have an influence on the leather’s thickness, handle and grain condition and reduce the strength of the leather to a greater or lesser extent.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE : Materials - Preparation of leather samples - Oxygen Index Test - Vertical Flame Test - Determination of other Properties
