Tannage -- Législation -- BrésilIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The importance of livestock in the production of meat and dairy products, as well as the tannery activity that uses hides and skins as raw material, is widely recognized. However, a considerable fraction of the raw material is discarded or sent to other industries because of its composition or limited value in terms of leather manufacturing. Many studies were conducted to reduce, reuse, recycle or dispose of tanning process waste. Alternatives are being implemented to ensure the adoption of environmentally safe methods that meet environmental laws, and to raise the awareness of the professionals involved in the sector. Brazil reportedly has the largest commercial cattle herd in the world, is the largest producer of bovine cattle in the world and the world's third largest producer and exporter of leather. Other significant data, as well as other indicators of the sector are presented. The present study characterizes the brazilian industry regarding the leather articles produced, where the footwear articles are the main end-use of leather. A study in 224 brazilian tanneries was performed with the purpose of finding out which are the most widely used tanning processes. A typical representation of the wastewater treatment technology most frequently adopted in Brazil comprises the stages of preliminary treatment, mechanical and physical-chemical treatment, biological treatment, sludge treatment or disposal and nitrogen removal. the most advanced wastewater treatments and water reuse in tanneries, also the main uses for by-products generated in the leather processing are presented and discussed. The work summarizes the research lines and developments conducted at the UFRGS, at the Laboratory for Leather and Environmental Studies, in order to obtain information on the lastes technologies and improvements in the leather sector. In many respects, however, chrome-free leather is inferior to chrome-tanned leather. UV and heat are known to be more detrimental to chrome-free leather than to chrome-tanned leather, especially in regard to the colorfastness of dyestuff and mechanical properties. Temperature, UV radiation, and humidity are key environmental factors that affect leather properties. The role of humidity and its interaction with UV radiation and temperature on leather properties, however, are not clear to the leather industry, and this information is needed for formulation of antioxidants that will protect chrome-free leather from UV and heat damage. Therefore, a systematic study was performed to formulate the relationship between these three environmental variables and resultant colorfastness and mechanical properties. A second order regression equation was derived to plot response surfaces that clearly illustrate the relationship between the environmental variables and colorfastness, as well as the resultant physical properties. Observations showed an intriguing interaction between humidity and radiation dosage. Measurements revealed that an increase in humidity resulted in a decrease in colorfastness and mechanical strength. However, after the UV radiation dosage reaches a certain level, an increase in humidity may actually help maintain both properties. Observation showed the stiffness decreased steadily with humidity, whereas the toughness index slightly increased with humidity. This study also used differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to determine the denaturation temperature as a function of various environmental conditions. Therefore, many new leather-making processes, so called 'cleaner technologies', have been proposed to reduce the levels of pollutant emission. The objective of this study is to make an environmental impact evaluation of such processes not only based on the quantity of wastes generated but also on the wastewater treatability. This paper is mainly concerned with the settleability of wastewater. Such an evaluation might be of great significance due to the enormous amount of wastewater and increased treatment costs. The research is typified by enzyme assisted soaking and unhairing (ESU) processes that are encouraged in beamhouse processes for protecting the environment. The chemical sedimentation behavior of ESU wastewater and the wastewater generated by conventional soaking and unhairing (CSU) processes are described and compared with each other. It was found that ESU wastewater showed better sedimentation property than CSU wastewater, indicating that the enzyme assisted soaking and unhairing processes have environmental friendliness in terms of wastewater settleability. Environnement -- Etudes d'impactIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Tanning industries have been vitally important to the economy of Bangladesh, yet they have been proven to be detrimental to the environment mainly due to the discharge of quantities of untreated wastewater containing chromium. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a practical tool used to evaluate and compare the life cycle environmental impacts of a product. Using the IMPACT 2002+ methodology within the SimaPro LCA modelling tool, we have studied and compared the environmental burden of of two leather products : full-chrome leather (FCL) and chrome-retanned crust leather (CRL). In the case of both FCL and CRL, it was found that significant environmental impacts were associated with tanning, rechroming, neutralisation, deliming-bating and the acid wash processes in the production cycle. The emissions responsible for these processes except deliming-bating, are Cr(III), Cr(VI) which plays a vital role in maximising the toxicity potential and ammonia (deliming-bating) to a minor extent. Supply chain hotspots are transport for raw hides, chemicals and electricity. FCL had 5 times, 4.53 times and 2.53 times greater impact on categories of aquatic ecotoxicity, non-carcinogens and ecosystem quality respectively compared to CRL. In addition, aquatic acidification potential of FCL was greater than that of CRL, while CRL had marginally higher contribution to aquatic eutrophication. The carbon footprint of the two systems was found to be about 0.75kg CO2 equivalent per M2 of leather. The assessment shows that the FCL production system has higher environmental impact than CRL. Compliance with this increasingly complex regulatory system precludes single objective approaches. Environmental auditing is a systematised approach to identifying the problems within a particular sector or production unit.
To ensure that the leather industry can effectively reduce its environmental impact, BLC is co-ordinating two international projects to provide reliable information on the real, as distinct from claimed, status of clean technologies applicable to this sector.
