Tannage végétalIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : In the tanning industry, the deterioration of leather due to the development of fungi is of great concern. Some fungi metabolize important substances in leather, causing serious damage such as pigmented stain that is difficult to remove, defects, surface roughness, and loss of physical and mechanical resistance, which affect the quality of the final product. This work evaluated the performance of five microbicides conventionally used in the leather industry, against different fungi. Microbicides were applied during the tanning process with vegetable tannin in the fatliquoring step. Accelerated microbiological tests (plating and tropical chamber) were performed. The results revealed a low antifungal capacity of selected microbicides when applied at an offer of 0.2% (mass hide base) fungicides. Treatment with OIT+BMC/water at an offer of 0.75% showed satisfactory fungal protection against different fungi tested and proved to be the most suitable for the preservation of vegetable tanned leather. SurfactantsIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : A change of molecular structure improves the surface active efficiency of new generation gemini surfactants. As a result, it was confirmed that the dosage could be reduced considerably in industrial applications as performance chemicals, leading to economically quantifiable benefits. The performance of newly synthesized gemini surfactant based sulfonated dimeric malenised soya fatty acid bridged with butane diol was evaluated as a leather fatliquor. The chemical parameters of the fatliquors were analysed and tested on leather. The properties imparted by the fatliquor to leather were studied qualitatively and quantitatively. SEM studies of the treated leathers revealed better penetration of the gemini surfactant based fatliquor compared to the control. Results were correlated in terms of emulsification power, zeta potential and particle size of the surfactants, found to be better than the conventional surfactant. The surface energy was calculated for the fatliquors and found to be equal. Note de contenu : - MATERIALS AND METHODS : Formulation of fatliquors - Synthesis of sulphonated gemini surfactants

Titre : Performance synergy from acrylic-based retanning agents Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Anton El A'mma, Auteur Année de publication : 2001 Article en page(s) : p. 9-13 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Leather made with combinations/blends of a Lubricating Acrylic Syntan (LAS) and an Acrylic Polyacid Syntan, have shown unexpected and marked improvement in its water repellence and strength versus the separate use of the syntans alone. The upgraded performance of leather has been attributed to a beneficial synergy between the LAS and the Polyacid. This paper addresses and discusses the chemical properties of the Acrylic Polyacid Syntans that affect the observed performance synergy. These properties embody the nature of the polyacid, its molecular weight and the extent of neutralization with a strong base. Blends of Lubricating Acrylic Syntans and Polyacids have the potential to become commercial products that will also simplify and streamline retanning operations. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Collagen type 14, which is located on the surfaces of collagen fibrils of hide and skin, is a minority collagen that might play a role in leather drying. We show by immunohistological techniques that most of the non-helical portion of collagen type 14 is removed by lime. Unlike collagen type 6, it does not persist in the grain enamel. The triple-helical segments, however, might still persist, since these are not espected to react with the antibody stains used here. How type 14 collagen is removed might be an important feature of hide and grain quality in leather.
