The base component consists of a hyperbranched alkyd polyol (HBA) resin and a mixture of pigments like titanium dioxide, yellow iron oxide, carbon black and talc. The pigments were dispersed in the HBA resin using a ball milI for a period of 6 - 7 h. The base component is then cured separatly with two different types of isocyanate curing agents such as aliphatic isocyanate (Desmodur N3390) and cycloaliphatic isocyanate (Desmodur Z4470). These experimental paint compositions were applied on mild steel specimens coated with epoxy red oxide primer (two coats of primer and two coats of exterior grey paint). The coating systems were evaluated for adhesion, tensile, corrosion and weathering resistance properties. For comparison, specimens of the conventional (silicone alkyd) paint was also prepared and tested. Results indicate that the developed coating composition have superior mechanical, corrosion resistance and weathering resistance properties compared to the conventional silicone alkyd coating. RevêtementsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A hyperbranched polyol (HBP) was synthesized using dipentaerythritol as a core material and 2,2-bis(methylol) propionic acid as a chain extender. This was reacted with varying concentrations of soya fatty acid to make hyperbranched alkyd (HBA) resins. The HBA resins containing unreacted hydroxyl groups were reacted with isophorone diisocyanate at NCO/OH ratio of 1.6:1 to make high solid hyperbranched urethane alkyd (HBUA) resins. The excess NCO content in the HBUA resins was used to cure with atmospheric moisture, and thus moisture-cured HBUA coatings were formed. The resins were characterized by FTIR, and 13C NMR spectroscopic analysis. A series of such resins were made using different fatty acid/isocyanate ratios with respect to the hydroxyl groups present in the HBP. The effect of compositions on the mechanical and weathering properties of the cured resins was investigated. It was observed that there was an optimum fatty acid–isocyanate ratio in terms of the requirements of solvent, mechanical and weathering properties of the resin. The requirement of solvents for formulating HBUA coatings is much lower compared to linear alkyd-based coatings. The present study reveals that the moisture-cured HBUA resins can be used as a binder material in the field of low-pollution weather-resistance coatings. Revêtements:PeintureIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In this study, we describe a simple method for the synthesis of a novel nanocomposite comprising hyperbranched urethane alkyd and silver nanoparticle (embedded in the resin) for a high-solid antimicrobial coating application. During the process, silver benzoate was dispersed in the hyperbranched alkyd (HBA) resin containing free hydroxyl groups and the resin is cured with an isocyanate trimer (Desmodur N3390) to make a silver nanoparticle-based nanocomposite coating. Silver benzoate is reduced by the free radicals, generated from naturally occurring oxidative curing of the fatty acid present in the alkyd resin. Unlike a conventional method, which involves the use of a toxic reducing agent or solvent, the present process does not require any toxic reducing agent for the generation of silver nanoparticles. The formation of silver nanoparticle was confirmed by spectroscopic and electron microscopic analysis. The HBA resin used in this work requires a much lesser amount of solvent for making a coating formulation and offers superior mechanical properties compared to the conventional alkyds. The surfaces coated with the nanocomposite coating showed excellent antimicrobial activity against Serratia marcescens bacteria.
