The degree of die swell decrease depends among others on filler particles geometry. In the paper results of experimental investigations concerning relations between particle geometry and die swell are presented for polyethylene and polystyrene filled with a number of commercial fillers. Approximation functions describing these relations were developed. This enabled simultaneous analysis of the influence of different particle geometry properties on die swell. Good fitting of approximation models to experimental results was achieved. Similar behavior of polyethylene and polystyrene compounds was observed. Shape ratio exhibited the most pronounced influence on die swell. The higher is the shape ratio of filler particles the smaller is die swell. Much less significant influence showed specific surface and mean particle diameter.

Température -- ContrôleIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : It is well known that the process of injection molding with dynamic mold temperature control leads to a good replication quality of high aspect ratio microstructures. However, the inhomogeneous pressure distribution during the holding pressure phase results in an anisotropy of the component properties, low dimensional accuracy and, especially with optical polymers, in undesired stress birefringence. The anisotropy is based on the orientation of the molecular chains in the flow direction, which can be reduced by an injection-compression molding (ICM) process. In order to use the synergy from both processes, an injection-compression molding process with dynamic mold temperature control can be utilized. Within the scope of this investigation, the new process was reproduced by an ICM process at elevated mold temperature (ICM_EMT) and compared with injection molding (IM) with regard to molding accuracy and optical properties in dependence of component thickness and mold temperature. In order to evaluate the molding accuracy, the roughness of a wire-eroded microstructure on the cavity surface was measured. To determine the degree of orientation, the optical properties considered were the transmission and the path difference. It was shown that the adapted ICM process was able to achieve a high degree of replication accuracy with a low degree of orientation, especially for thin-walled components. ICM at elevated mold temperature reduced the path difference in the components with the lowest wall thickness by a factor of two while at the same time optimizing the replication of the microstructure. This could also be confirmed by transmission measurements. PolystyrèneIndex. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : Significant different thermal properties between amorphous and semi-crystalline polymers have a great effect on the selection of proper sintering parameters and the resulting properties of the parts made by selective laser sintering (SLS) process. This paper studied the differences in the part bed temperature (Tb), and relative density, tensile strength and dimensional accuracy of the SLS fabricated parts between semicrystalline and amorphous polymers, by measuring and comparing the laser sintering properties of polystyrene (PS), a typical amorphous polymer, and nylon-12 (PA12), a typical semicrystalline polymer. The results show that: the part bed temperatures (Tb) of amorphous polymers and semi-crystalline polymers should be kept close to glass transition temperature (Tg) and initial melting temperature (Tim) respectively, which can be measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and this rule combined with trial and error experiments can determine Tb of a polymer in the SLS process; the amorphous polymer SLS parts have very low relative densities and much lower tensile strengths than the strengths of their fully dense forms, while the semi-crystalline polymer SLS parts have higher relative densities and their tensile strengths are close to the strengths of their fully dense forms; the dimensional accuracy of the SLS parts of amorphous polymers is higher than that of semi-crystalline polymer SLS parts at the same processing parameters. The obtained results will be helpful for the development of new SLS materials and the setting of processing parameters.
