Titre : Rust morphology characterization of polyurethane and acrylic-based marine antifouling paints after salt spray test on scribed specimens Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Evangelia D. Kiosidou, Auteur ; Antonis Karantonis, Auteur ; Dimitrios I. Pantelis, Auteur ; Elisabete Ribeiro Silva, Auteur ; João Carlos Moura Bordado, Auteur Année de publication : 2017 Article en page(s) : p. 1381-1395 Note générale : Bibliogr.

The novelty of the experimental formulation arises from the immobilization of the biocide which minimizes leaching and was accomplished via a newly developed functionalization method, based on reaction of the biocide with highly reactive isocyanate functionality. The painting system was applied on steel specimens, then scribed with a sharp cutter and examined for 12 weeks in cyclic salt spray exposure. Identification of the rust morphologies was performed with XRD, Raman spectroscopy, SEM, and EDS methods. The absence of paint deformation during the experiment led to the formation of compact corrosion products, firmly adherent to the substrate, allowing transformation to more protective forms, such as oxides (hematite, maghemite, magnetite) and the least harmful of the oxyhydroxides (goethite, feroxyhyte), found in the mixture, ensuring sufficient corrosion protection. The unscratched part of the paint served as a barrier to corrosion product expansion beyond the scribed areas. An acrylic-based antifouling system was also examined for reasons of comparison. The experimental formulation exhibited superior anticorrosion performance overall, since the acrylic system presented extended material loss, blistering, checking, and extensive substrate rust coverage beneath the multilayer coat, implying unsatisfactory corrosion protection.
Spectroscopie RamanIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A newly developed, silicone-based, marine antifouling coating, containing 0.56% immobilized Econea, was examined in terms of its anticorrosion performance. Identification of the rust morphologies was done with XRD, Raman spectroscopy, SEM and EDS methods. The observed paint swelling during the experiment caused the formation of large, coarse rust agglomerates without adherence, which detached frequently causing reinitiation of the corrosion process. This procedure was revealed by the oxyhydroxide nature of the corrosion products. The basic corrosion morphology observed was a mixture of akaganeite and goethite. A commercial, silicone-based, foul-release coating served as a reference. The experimental formulation exhibited superior anticorrosion performance overall, since the reference system presented higher enlargement of the scribed areas, increased substrate material loss, a highly inhomogeneous corrosion layer with voids and smaller (stable) goethite amounts in the rust areas containing mainly akaganeite/goethite mixture. Tests de toxicitéIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : - Objective : To evaluate the safety and the synergistic effects of tea tree, lavender, eucalyptus and tangerine essential oils in combination on the skin using in vitro, ex vivo and clinical studies.
- Methods : The phototoxicity was predicted using 3T3 neutral red uptake phototoxicity test (OECD TG 432). Skin penetration was evaluated by confocal Raman microspectroscopy using direct application of essential oils to pig ears. For the clinical studies, 40 participants were enrolled and randomized in three groups: (1) lavender, eucalyptus and tangerine, (2) the same essential oils plus melaleuca and (3) placebo group. The skin was evaluated by noninvasive techniques before and after a 90-day period of topical use.
- Results : The essential oils were non-phototoxic, but the tangerine oil showed dose-dependent cytotoxicity (IC50: 33.1 µg/ml), presenting 35% of penetration in the viable epidermis. On the contrary, 17.7 µg/ml in combination was applied per day in the clinical study and the penetration rate for the combinations (10%, 1.77 µg/ml achieving the viable epidermis) guaranteed the safety, since in the clinical study, the application of the four essential oils improved skin barrier and morphologic skin characteristics, as well as increased skin hydration and decreased sebum levels, with no unwanted effects reported.
- Conclusions : All essential oils studied were considered non-cytotoxic or non-phototoxic separately except tangerine, which present a dose-dependent cytotoxicity. Finally, the essential oils in combination in an appropriate amount were safe and effective in the improvement of the hydrolipidic balance and morphological properties of the skin.Note de contenu : - MATERIAL AND METHODS : Developed formulations - Photoxicity evaluation - Confocal raman microspectroscopy - Clinical study - Stratum corneum water content - Transepidermal water loss - Sebum content of the skin surface - Amount of sebum in the infundibulum - Reflectance confocal microscopy - Statistical analysis

Note de contenu : - La spectroscopie Raman : De l'imagerie chimique microscopique à l'imagerie chimique nanométrique

Teinture -- Fibres textilesIndex. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : The interaction of dye molecules in different adsorption systems is diverse, which affects the adsorption process. In this work, the real-time adsorption process of CI Reactive Red 195 (RR195), CI Reactive Yellow 145 (RY145), and CI Reactive Blue 194 (RB194) in the actual dyeing process have been studied on cotton fabric by Raman spectroscopy. Three single, three binary, and one ternary system have been investigated at different temperatures (40, 50, 60, and 80°C). The equilibrium dye-uptake of RR195 and RY145 on cotton fabric decreased with the addition of other components, while that of RB194 remained unchanged. The temperature has little effect on the dyeing of cotton fabric with the RR195/RY145 system. The RR195/RB194 system is more suitable for high-temperature dyeing. RY145 is less affected by temperature below 60°C while dyeing at 80°C is greatly affected by temperature in the four systems. RB194 with a higher substantivity to the cotton fibre is less affected by temperature in the four systems. The batch adsorption rate data for the seven systems have been analysed based on pseudo-second-order kinetics. The results showed that the increase in temperature can accelerate the dyeing rate and time for dye adsorption to reach equilibrium. Activation parameters revealed the potential barrier that dyes need to overcome when dyeing cotton fabrics in different systems. In the actual combination dyeing process, the analysis of each component process can optimise the dye formulation and improve the dye utilisation.
