Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : European Coatings Award 2005 - Urethane-acrylic hybrid polymer dispersions (HPDs) offer an excellent cost/performance balance, but usually have a high content of N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) solvent. New regulations make it desirable to eliminate this material. However, solvant-free high-performance coating HPDs have now been developed. Novel gemini surfractants reduce their MFFT significantly, creating high-performance coating formulations with volatile organic content (VOC) of less than 100 g/l En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1w2U62fq68n92welpr1aP-ZFlHOYjKIje/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=8888

Molecular defoamers represent a novelclass of defoamers that break foam on a molecular level, which is unlike conventional defoamers that utilize macroscopic physical incompatibility within a coating formulation. This is accomplished by the ability of the molecular defoamer to adsorb at the air-water interface of a foam bubble and, thereby, displace some of the surfactants that stabilize the foam. Based on a fundamental understanding of the effects of basic adsorption parameters, innovative nonsilicone molecular defoamers were developed that provide long-term foam control, effectively reduce both surface tension and foam in a variety of emulsion polymers, and decrease significantly the level of defects in waterbome coating applications. A synergistic performance benefit was obtained when these molecular defoamers were used in combination in an acrylic, industrial maintenance formulation. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Increasingly, surfactants with multifunctional performance benefits are desired to not only lower the surface tension of waterborne formulations, but also to reduce foam. Low HLB, nonionic Gemini-type surfactants are commonly utilized for this reason. As legislation has required coatings with increasingly lower volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and, consequently, lower coalescent levels, the ability of Gemini surfactants to reduce the minimum film formation temperature (MFFT) of emulsion polymers has garnered interest as a means to enable formulation of lower VOC coatings. This article describes the MFFT reduction imparted by Gemini-type surfactants for a wide variety of emulsion polymers. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) showed that films prepared using an alkyl ester (AE) surfactant were generally smoother than films not containing the AE surfactant. While enabling low-VOC formulating, these surfactants were found to have minimal effect on coating performance. Lower HLB surfactants were found to be the most effective coalescents. A simple model whereby these surfactants preferentially adsorb onto the surface of the polymer particles is introduced to explain their efficiency. Komar, Auteur Année de publication : 1998 Article en page(s) : p. 342-349 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A new generation, waterborne epoxy resin system that offers higher value for ambient cure coatings has been developed. The purpose of this paper is to describe the new waterborne epoxy resin and amine-functional curing agent system for use in ambient cure coatings on steel or concrete substrates. Basic material characteristics and coating formulating information will be presented. The influence of amine-to-epoxide stoichiometry on the performance properties of enamel and primer coatings formulated from these new materials will be discussed. Note de contenu : - Enamel coatings

Walker, Auteur ; Daniel J. Tempel, Auteur ; Frank R. Pepe, Auteur ; Kenneth A. Yoxheimer, Auteur ; Alan S. Boyce, Auteur Année de publication : 2005 Article en page(s) : p. 28-36 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Urethane-acrylic hybrid polymer dispersions (HPDs) can offer cost/performance advantages over common 1K coating materials such as polyurethane dispersions (PUDs), acrylic emulsions, and blends thereof. One disadvantage of both PUDs and HPDs is the inclusion of N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) solvent, which is commonly a necessary processing solvent included at levels ranging from about 3 to 15%. Since NMP has recently been added to California’s Proposition 65 list and has generally become objectionable for use in Europe, it has become desirable to eliminate NMP from these products. Consequently, solvent-free versions of HPDs have been developed that, despite the lack of NMP used in their preparation, have been found to perform favorably compared to analogous solvent-containing polymers (both hybrid and PUD). Like their solvent-containing counterparts, the outstanding properties of the new solvent-free versions are apparently due to their true hybrid nature, which is analogous to an interpenetrating network (IPN) as indicated by a broad glass transition temperature range. Although the NMP-free versions still require coalescing solvents for adequate film formation, they offer greater flexibility in choosing alternate solvents when formulating high performance coatings.
