(In rail-industry parlance, the word “lining” is often used to refer to both interior coatings [spray-applied] and interior linings [applied in sheets].) Since the adoption of regulations that require systematic assessment and maintenance of linings under certain conditions, a consensual mindset and practices have gradually evolved in the industry. This article explores that evolution including past and present norms. Note de contenu : - Corrosive cargo

Solvants écologiquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Vegetable oils, solvents, natural polymers are the crucial ingredient of many research and industrial chemical processes and consumer product formulations. Out of which vegetable oil constitute the single, largest, easily available, low cost, non-toxic, non-depletable, biodegradable family yielding materials that are capable of competing with fossil fuel derived petro-based products. It helps reduce the carbon footprint and environmental impact of chemicals on it, in addition to societal and legislative push that more products be produced from carbon-neutral resources. Biomass is a promising renewable alternative resource for producing bio-solvents, and this review focuses on their extraction and synthesis on a laboratory and large scale. Starch, lignocellulose, plant oils, animal fats and proteins have been fused together with synthetic pathways, green technologies and processes to form known or new bio-derived solvents including Alcohols, esters, terpenes, benzenes, toluene and xylene (BTX),ethers alkanes, aromatics, ionic liquids (ILs), furans, liquid polymers and deep eutectic solvents (DESs)—all with unique physiochemical properties that warrant their use as solvation agents in manufacturing of coating, pharmaceutical, cosmetics, chemicals, energy, food and beverage industries, etc.
The most important feature of vegetable oil is their unique chemical structure with unsaturation sites, epoxies, hydroxyls, esters and other functional groups along with inherent fluidity characteristics. These enable them to undergo various chemical transformations producing low molecular weight polymeric materials with versatile applications, particularly as heart or centric ingredients in paints and coatings.Note de contenu : - BIO BASED OR BIO SOLVENTS

The objective of this work was to compare five different resin types (epoxy, acrylic, alkyd, silicone, and silicone–epoxy hybrid) in an intumescent formulation and to study the influence of resin concentration on the fire protection performance of the coating. Results from TGA and MCC analysis of resins and coatings indicated that coatings containing silicone are thermally stable and release smaller amounts of heat. In the fire resistance test, samples containing epoxy and silicone resins had lower temperatures (130–160°C) compared to the other samples. It has also been found that it is possible to decrease resin concentration in formulations containing epoxy and silicone resins up to 25.6% and to maintain or even improve their fire protection capability. Revêtements protecteursIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The authors summarises all of the recent data published on producing waterborne acrylic polyols for 2K PU topcoats.
New regulations, increased awareness and the importance of environmental stewardship lead to a strongly increased demand for waterborne (WB) protective topcoats. However, matching the performance of solventborne (SB) two-component (2K) polyurethanes remains a challenge for resin and paint producers. Synthesis and formulation of primary or secondary dispersions are not straightforward.
For secondary dispersions, the removal of solvents from polyols prior to dispersion in water is technically challenging. The emulsion polymerisation process producing primary dispersions often poses problems of water-phase homopolymerisation of the hydroxyl monomers resulting in poor stability of the emulsions, high process grit and insufficient crosslinking of the final coatings.
Waterborne acrylic polyols (APO) for 2K urethane finishes have played an important role in enabling regulatory compliance in the industrial market, yet their synthesis can be difficult. This paper introduces two methods to produce high-performance solvent-free waterborne acrylic polyols using either glycidyl neodecanoate or its acrylated adduct. The performance characteristics of coatings made with these waterborne polyols are also demonstrated.Note de contenu : - Waterborne technologies
