Revêtements en bâtiment:Peinture en bâtimentIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Trends in the decorative market are strongly driven by two sources today. The first driver is legislation, where compliance to Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) regulations is non-negotiable and is forcing formulators to look carefully at all their ingredients (including additives) to control VOC to low levels (<50g/l). The second driver, and arguably the most important, is the end consumer, who are asking for longer lasting, better performing products from the OEM producers and additionally easier to use products thar are "less harmful" to themselves and their families in the Do-It-Yourself market - this could mean lowder odor, less solvent or quicker drying for example - and there is an ever growing popularity of "eco" brands in the market. For home-use architectural paints, the good hiding power, good wetting and low dirt pick-up is important to the end user. The desire to achieve better hiding power of paints results in an open film with high PVC (Pigment Volume Concentration which often has limitations with respect to water resistance, weter beading and dirt pick-up. For wood coatings, water resistance is also an extremely important attribute to prevent peeling and cracking but also to maintain the aesthetics of the coatings. OEM applied wood coatings also require anti-blocking resistance during production, storage and shipping to prevent damage to the goods.
This paper demonstrates how silicone chemistry can help formulator meet both the environmental and performance demands of the end consumer, giving the formulator possibilities to differentiate their product line or indeed achieve the same performance of current commercial paints or coatings more economically. In doing so they are also meeting the necessary legislative regulations. Dow Corning 87 Additive and Dow Corning 88 Additive are new silicone-based additives which bring differentiated performance to the en user - we will demonstrate how, at low levels (typically 2-5%) these additives impart good water resistance, and we will sho examples in architectural paints compared to the incumbent silicone resin emulsion technology (typically used at 5-10%). Dow Corning 87 additives will also impart water beading, a property typically perceived by the end user as meaning excellent water resistance, giving a 2-in-1 additive option and simplifying the formulation. Lastly we will show the possibilities to bring a anti-blocking as a secondary attribute to wood coatings.
Whilst we endeavor to provide the requirements of the end user, of course we also to consider the needs of the formulator during the paint making process ! They too have needs to meet, especially with respect to foam control, which cancause problems during the manufacturing and filling processes. In this paper we will also show how Dow Corning 62 Additive and Dow Corning 68 Additive -highs solids silicone emulsions - can be used at lower addition levels to achieve good foam control. Finally all these attributes must come at an afordable cost. We will demonstrate the effectiveness of the various Dow Corning additives at low addition levels in the paint to reach this final goal.Note de contenu : - Improving the durability of architectural paints

Tension superficielleIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Modern waterborne and conventional solvent-based coatings face a number of technical and commercial challenges. Additives are increasingly important for enabling the coating formulator to reach these ever-growing demands and advance the technology. Wetting, leveling, slip, recoatability or easy-to-clean properties are strongly influenced by surface-active additives. These surface additives migrate toward the coating/air or coating/substrate interface and tailor the surface or interface behavior. A unique possibility of building up multi-layer coating systems is to increase the surface energy of an underlying coating using hydrophilic additives, which positively affects the wetting of the subsequent coating layer.

UrethanesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The rheological properties of an industrial coating, adhesive or sealant are vital to its success. A well formulated industrial coating, adhesive or sealant has balanced rheological properties, easy but controlled application, good Sag or slump resistance and storage stability. The thickeners incorporated in the coating, adhesive or sealant formulations provide the ma nufacturers with the a bi lity to design the rheological characteristics they need fora specific end use. Organic thixotropes are castor oil or polyamide-based materials that are especially useful in systems, such as industrial coatings, construction sealants, caulks, adhesives and mastics. These additives provide outstanding efficiency for shear thinning, viscosity build, Sag control and pigment suspension. However, the high activation temperature is sometimes a deterrent for broader use. In this paper, we present a new generation of highly efficient organic thixotrope-based thickeners that can be activated at significantly lower temperatures. These new materials can be successfully incorporated in industrial coatings or sealant formulas for better viscosity build, Sag resistance and higher extrusion rates. They display a wider process window and require less energy and time in production which can result in lower costs. Stabilisants (chimie)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The author discusses the development of Disperbyk-2155, which provides a high molecular weight for stabilisation and solids content.
Due to its innovative sphere-like structure, Disperbyl-2155 combines high molecular weight with high solids content, therefore opening up new horizons in the wetting and dispersing of pigments in high solid as weel as in conventional coating systems. It displays outstanding deflocculation and stabilisation properties, effectively reducing mill base viscosity, is storage-stable and shows wide compatibility with many different types of resin systems. The next generation polyurethane wetting and dispersing additive Disperbyk-2155 is designed to be used in pigment concentrates for automotive coatings, floor coatings (based on polyurethane and epoxy), polyurethane foams and thanks to its 100% solids content also for solvent-free UV systems. In addition, the additive has been successfully used in co-grinding systems.Note de contenu : - Pigment stabilisation in high solid systems
