In order to ensure optimum performance of painted metal, the metal surface is usually modified by applying a pre-treatment. The resulting conversion coating improves paint adhesion and reduces the tendency for corrosion to occur beneath the paint .
Chromium based pre-treatments have been used quite extensively with good sucess. They promote paint adhesion inhibit corrosion and are cost-effective . Howewer environmental concerns and the health risks associated with the handling of chromium, particulary in its hexavalent oxidation state, have led to efforts to develop more benign alternatives . A major advance in reducing exposure of the workforce and discharge into the environment was the introduction of dried-in-place or no-rinse chrome treatments. These early coatings rapidly gained a deserved reputation for improved chip and corrosion resistance compared with the conventional wet paints they superseded. This high performance is achieved through a combination of higher film build and increased crosslink density. Powder coatings also have application plant, thereby reducing waste ans losses (as low as 1%).
In the early 1970's, typical applications of powder coatings included exterior trim such as bumpers, door mirrors and windshield wiper arms. Traditionally, powder coatings have been employed as low gloss black, or dark grey, coatings as a contrast styling feature. As their performance benefits became more widely recognised, powder coatings increased their penetration into the components market to include functional as well as decorative applications.
With the recent developpments in terms of the surface appearance and exterior weathering durability, powder coatings are generating considerable interest in the automotive body finishing market, both as a clear coat and primer surfacer. The primer surfacer route is the more significantly developed of the two applications with several plants operating worldwide.
Powder coating is also being evaluated as a clear topcoat system, most signicantly by the Low Emission Paint Consortium (LEPC) in the North America and BMW Europe.
The increase in the interest in powder coatings has two main drivers. the first is that powder coatings technology can now meet the most stringent performance requirements, in terms of exteriror weathering resistance and visual apperance. The second and more significant one is the pressure from environmental legislation to reduce solvent emissions.Note de contenu : - Environmental issues

Today also environmental considerations have become more and more important. In view of existing and announced environmental legislation the reduction of volatile organic compounds is one of the main driving forces of product development. There is no doubt that reduction of VOC content is important. However, it is doubtful if this is the best means of evaluating the environmental effect of new systems. In the authors' opinion an integrated chain evaluation or life cycle analysis is a better way.
In 1989 the Dutch Government announced in their National Environmental Policy Plan the intention to develop a method for the evaluation of the environmental effects of new products. These 'Eco-yardsticks' were developed by TAUW Infra Consult and published in 1991. The method embodies eight main sections :
1. Raw materials
2. Energy
3. Emissions
4. Nuisance
5. Waste
6. Re-usability
7. Respairability, and
8. Lifespan
These main sections are subdivided in twenty-five sub headings, such as exhaustion of non-renewable raw materials, emissions of acidifying compounds and chemical waste.
Decorative paints were one of the product groups by which the method was investigated during 1992. Four different paints were studied and evaluated for the relevant sub headings. Surprisingly the acrylic dispersion-based paint performed worst in the life cycle analysis. This was unexpected as these paint systems contain mainly water-based as solvent. The results of the study have been presented to the paint industry by Bancken and Geurink. Their main conclusion was that this integrated chain approach, based on the 'Environmental Measures', offers a sound basis for the evaluation of the environmental effects of different products. This paper describes subsequent investigations into this subject, including alkyd emulsions and clear varnishes.Note de contenu : - LIFE CYCLE ANALYSIS

Many metal food and beverage cans - both aluminium and steel - have internal lacquer coatings to provide protective barriers between the metal surfaces and the food or beverage. These barrier coatings ensure the quality of the food or beverage is maintained and they also prevent unacceptable metal contamination. The lacquer coatings are based on polymeric compositions and sometimes contain inorganic fillers. There is a need, however, to ensure that any transfer, or migration, of substances from the protective lacquers themselves do not make the food or beverage unsafe. As the safety of foods and beverages is of high importance, the requirements to control the migration of substances from can lacquers are contained within national laws. At the present time different specific 'regulations' exist in each of the European Union (EU) Member States. This situation will change within the next few years as the European Commission progresses with the harmonization of the laws and regulations of the European Union Members States on 'food contact materials and articles'.Note de contenu : - EU 'regulations' on food and beverage packaging
