A number of copolymerization runs were carried out with different IA concentrations. The effect of functional monomer on the overall conversion, the colloidal properties of the latexes, and the distribution of the carboxylic groups (buried, particle surface and aqueous phase) were examined. The carboxylic groups present in the latexes were analyzed using conductimetric and potentiometric titrations. The behavior of the IA on the wet scrub resistance of highly pigmented paints for architectural coatings was examined and correlated with the distribution of the carboxylic groups. The results obtained showed that the properties of highly pigmented paints are greatly dependent on the amount and distribution of the carboxylic groups. The carboxylic acid distributed in the aqueous phase has a strong influence on the wet scrub resistance and on the characteristics of the final products. This change created a need to investigate the performance of coatings on these new Cu-based preservatives as compared with CCA. This study evaluated performance of a number of semitransparent deck stains on CCA, alkaline copper quat (ACQ), copper azole (CA), and untreated wood samples during 3 years of natural weathering. Coatings were evaluated for their ability to reduce water uptake, color change, checking of wood, and mildew growth and to improve general appearance of preservative-treated wood samples. Overall, Cu-amine-treated wood had on average 50% higher water uptake than CCA-treated wood samples. Although solvent-based coatings had better water repellency performance on CCA-treated and untreated wood, there was no significant difference in water-repellent effectiveness (WRE) between water-based and solvent-based coatings on ACQ- or CA-treated wood. All preservative-treated woods had less color change and better visual ratings than those of untreated wood samples. Based on image analysis which was used to determine the total area of surface checking on samples after 3 years, preservative treatments had no significant effect on reducing checking of wood while coatings reduced surface checking by 30-40%. A number of exterior penetrating wood stains were characterized in terms of glass transition temperature (T g), solid content, viscosity, and surface tension. The contact angles of liquid coatings were measured on wood treated with chromated copper arsenate, alkaline copper quat, and copper azole as well as untreated wood. Also, the film thicknesses of the cured coatings on wood surfaces were measured by back-scattered electron imaging of osmium-treated samples. Partial least square-regression (PLS-R) modeling was used to correlate measured coating properties with their weathering performance on the preservative-treated and untreated wood substrates, based on water repellency, color retention, and visual ratings after 3 years of natural weathering. A PLS model was developed with 77% fitting accuracy and 69% prediction ability. This model indicated that preservative treatments significantly affected coating performance, and among coating properties, film thickness, viscosity, and glass transition temperature had the greatest effects on the coatings’ performance in exterior. The changing surface texture was shown to be a strong function of temperature and solvent content. Leveling occurred during the initial heating of the clearcoats, while smaller wavelength roughness was observed to appear during cooling after curing. The dynamic viscosity was shown to be a strong function of catalyst loading. Numerical simulations were conducted to calculate the apparent viscosity during the leveling process. Calculated viscosity profiles matched theoretical predictions for the behavior of these clearcoats. Spectroscopie d'impédance électrochimiqueIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In this article, polysiloxane-modified epoxy coatings were prepared using the mixture (CPSA) polyaminopropylmethylsiloxane (PAPMS) oligomer/N-(2-hydroxyethyl)ethylenediamine as a curing agent and cardanol as a compatibilizer. The PAPMS oligomer was prepared from the controlled hydrolysis and condensation of (γ-aminopropyl)methyldimethoxysilane. Conventional epoxy coatings based on commercial phenalkamine epoxy curing agent (PECA) were also fabricated for comparison. The compatibility between the CPSA amine curing agent and epoxy resin was investigated by SEM and element-mapping measurements. The anticorrosive performances of the CPSA- or PECA-based epoxy coatings were thoroughly examined by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), salt fog tests, and immersion experiments in acid (25 wt % NaCl). It was found that cardanol can dramatically improve the miscibility of CPSA with epoxy resins. Polysiloxane-modified (namely, CPSA-based) epoxy coatings have much better corrosion resistance than conventional (namely, PECA-based) epoxy coatings. By manipulating the electron density of the dispersion medium, the microstructural parameters of the latex dispersion were evaluated based on quantitative discussion of the scattering intensity distribution profiles. Four isoscattering points could be identified in the contrast-variation measurements, located at the scattering vectors corresponding to the position of the sharp minima of the scattering curve of homogenous spheres. This suggests that the shape and structure of particles were not affected by adding a certain amount of sucrose and salt. This phenomenon was attributed to the existence of the thin surface layers around particle core in the system. The data indicate that the latex particles exhibit a core-shell structure, and the average thickness of the shell is about 2 nm. Note de contenu : - Latex dispersions containing added sodium chloride

Vernis -- AdditifsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In this study, a polyurethane clearcoat was modified using a silicone polyacrylate antigraffiti additive and its surface free energy and mechanical properties were evaluated by various analytical techniques. The results showed that surface free energy decreased by replacing the polyol resin with the additive up to 10 mol%. Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) showed that the presence of the additive increased the storage modulus of the samples at ambient temperature. Evaluation of stainability of the coatings containing the additive revealed that a spray paint would be repelled from the surface showing a proper antigraffiti behavior. The additive did not affect the surface roughness of the films, indicating that the antigraffiti properties resulted from changes in surface chemistry due to migration of the additive to the surface. Several factors affecting the encapsulation efficiency of nano-ATO were studied. The prepared hybrid latices were characterized using transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering particle size analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, and ultraviolet--visiblenear infrared (NIR) spectra. The results show that the encapsulation efficiency of nano-ATO reaches the maximum value of 78.0% with 3 wt% of nano-ATO, 4 wt% of SDS, and 4 wt% of HD, and the mean diameter of hybrid latex particles is 87.5 nm. Both the weight loss ratio and the transmittance in NIR region of hybrid film decrease with the increasing nano-ATO amount. The prepared hybrid film containing nano-ATO exhibits excellent ability for shielding IR light with high transmittance in visible region, which can be used as transparent a heat-insulating coating for energy savings. In spite of that, performance evaluation of these paints is normally carried out using dry substrates or even on free paint films. This article presents research performed on 16 commercial paint systems: seven silicate, three silicone, three hydro-pliolite and two lime-based systems, as well as one common vinyl emulsion paint that served as reference. Each paint was applied and cured both on dry and on damp mortar substrates. The test specimens were subjected to water vapor permeability tests and evaporative drying tests. The following conclusions could be drawn: (i) the way paint systems influence the drying of the substrate, to which they were applied and where they cured, may vary significantly depending on the moisture content of that substrate; (ii) vapor permeability, measured with specimens applied and cured on dry substrate, may be an acceptable way of predicting a paint's influence on drying, provided that the paints are applied and cured on dry substrate or that their characteristics are not significantly affected by the moisture content of that substrate.

The composite coating of EN–PTFE–MoS2 was heat treated at different temperatures for hardness investigations. The surface morphology of coatings was characterized by scanning electron microscopy. Pin-on-disk and potentiodynamic polarization tests were used to study the tribological and corrosion properties of the coatings, respectively. Results of hardness analysis revealed that the hardness of electroless nickel coatings was increased by the heat treatment, and its maximum was gained at 400°C. Wear investigations showed that simultaneous co-deposition of the PTFE and MoS2 particles into the nickel coating increased the wear resistance of the coating by about 30% and reduced the average value of friction coefficient to 0.25 from 0.65. Corrosion studies illustrated that simultaneous co-deposition of the PTFE and MoS2 particles led to reduction in corrosion resistance by 10 and 5 times that of EN coating in brine and acidic solution, respectively. Transition vitreuseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Relaxation of surface defects shows that the surface of a crosslinked epoxy system, under normal laboratory conditions, apparently has a softening transition temperature that is approximately 20°C lower than calorimetric measures of T g in the bulk. Physical aging data here confirms that this transition does resemble a glass transition. This observation is significant for properties that are determined by the surface of a coating. When ambient humidity is such that an epoxy may absorb significant quantities of moisture, it is plasticized, reducing its T g. When the relaxation of nanoindentations was measured in a humid environment, the value of this softening surface transition temperature was further reduced by 10°C. Thus, the surface properties of a polymer coating, such as wear, durability, friction, will depend not only on the ambient temperature, but also on whether the environment is humid. This is very important when such a coating responds to an environment that changes, e.g., natural weather. Note de contenu : - Surface transition temperature via indentation recovery
