RhéologieIndex. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : The crystallization of semi-crystalline polymers is often analyzed by rheometry and calorimetry. By rheometry the viscosity evolution during crystallization can be followed, whereas from a calorimetric measurement, the evolution of the degree of crystallinity can be calculated. The time evolution of these material properties is valuable input for polymer processing simulation software and in order to combine the data in a reliable manner, hardening curves are used as a characterization tool. Such a hardening curve correlates the relative increase of the viscosity resulting from crystallization, to the advancing degree of crystallinity. In this study, these are extracted from simultaneous measurements on one sample using a RheoDSC device. The RheoDSC technique allows for the direct combination of the rheological and calorimetric signal without the need of combining separate stand-alone measurement results. In this study, isothermal crystallization experiments are used to discuss the benefits of this approach. This will lead to the recommendation that measuring the hardening effect in steady shear measurements at very low shear rates in a direct combined RheoDSC setup is the most reliable method to compile unambiguously a material specific hardening curve for semi-crystalline polymers. ProductionIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Stress optical behavior as influenced by blend composition has been investigated by on–line stress monitoring during melt spinning of a series of melt miscible PEEK/PEI blends. At low stresses/draw downratios, the fibers are found to be amorphous. In this range, the linear stress optical rule is obeyed and stress optical constant was found to be composition dependent. Beyond a critical drawdown, the PEEK chains first form very highly oriented ordered domains that exhibit significant translational disorder along the fiber axis. In the processing range observed, this structure persists even at high spinline deformation/stresses. While the stress optical behavior remains linear for those compositions where no stress crystallization was detected, negative deviation from initial linearity was observed when these ordered PEEK regions began to be observed indicating that birefringence saturation is approached while stresses are increased. ViscoélasticitéIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Injection stretch blow molding (ISBM) is a two-step process that was designed and optimized mainly for unfilled PET resins. The present study focuses on stretch blow molding of a PET filled with different amounts of sub-micronic mineral fillers. The influence of fillers is analyzed thanks to DSC, DMA, tensile testing and processing in different configurations on a prototype apparatus and an industrial machine. It is demonstrated that fillers enhance crystallization kinetics, which leads to a reduction of the processing range. Differences in strain hardening induced by fillers make it necessary to adjust blowing temperature. However, the main effect occurs during the heating phase of the preforms. Temperature within a filled preform is much less homogeneous than in neat PET, making the temperature gradient totally different if the heating protocol is kept unchanged. Once the heating of filled preforms is controlled to reach equivalent temperature gradients, blowing is possible and rather equivalent to that of pure PET.
Polymères isotactiquesIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : We report the impact of grafting glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) at different degrees onto isotactic polybutene-1 (iPB-1) on the crystallization process. The study of the crystal form transition using FTIR and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) revealed that the conversion degree from form II to form I of the grafted iPB-1 (iPB-g-GMA) was higher than that of iPB-1 under the same experimental conditions and increased with increasing grafting degree. The spherulitic size of iPB-g-GMA was smaller compared to iPB-1 at the same amplification factor in Polarized Optical Microscopy (POM). The kinetic parameters of the non-isothermal crystallization process have been determined based on Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) experiments and the Ozawa and Mo equation. The results showed that the crystallization rate of iPB-g-GMA was higher than that of iPB-1. The activation energy for the non-isothermal crystallization process of iPB-g-GMA (with a grafting degree of 1.54%) was lower than that of iPB-1, which further illustrated that grafting GMA on iPB-1 accelerated the crystallization rate.
