This has been due to the increased usage of prepainted steel products in the construction and domestic appliance industries and a recognition by the automotive manufacturing industry of the benefits of prepainted steels, such as Durasteel and Bonazinc. The coil coating industry is, however, under increasing pressure from environmentalists who question the manufacture, content and recyclability of prepainted steel. The major areas of concern are the levels of solvents used in current coil coating paints, the continued use of chromates in pretreatments and primers and the recyclability of halogen-containing (PVC, PVF2) prepainted steels. The European steel industry must respond positively to these environmental pressures if it wishes to maintain and expand its coil coating operations.
Radiation curing has a large potential as a future processing technology for the production of prepainted steel strip. This technology is currently widely used throughout the plastic, paper and wood-coating industries where it shows a number of environmental advantages over conventional thermal curing.Note de contenu : - PRINCIPLES OF RADIATION CURING

As with other surface coatings, additives are required to achieve optimum application characteristics. Multifunctional surface control additives impart flow, leveling, slip characteristics, air release and can promote adhesion. Many of these properties stem from the additive's inherent lack of system compatibility, allowing the additive to migrate to the air interface. Often specific requirements for radiation-curing systems prohibit the use of non-reactive migratory additives. This paper discusses the development of reactive additives for reactive systems.
