This paper describes the technique used in the linkage step. Laboratory exposures were carried out on the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Simulated Photodegradation by High Energy Radiant Exposures (SPHERE) using a factorial design of four temperatures, four relative humidities, four ultraviolet-visible ranges, and four neutral density filters. Similar specimens were exposed on the roof of a NIST laboratory in Gaithersburg, MD. The temperature and relative humidity of the outdoor exposures and the solar spectrum were used to characterize the roof environment at 12 min intervals. Chemical degradation of all specimens was followed by transmission Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectra. Dose, the radiation incident on the specimens, was estimated from lamp and filter spectra for the SPHERE exposures and from the solar spectra for outdoor exposures. Specimen UV–visible absorbance spectra were used with the estimates of dose to give estimates of dosage—the energy absorbed by the specimens. Using filter ranges for the SPHERE data allowed estimation of relative degradation efficiency over the range of the solar spectrum. This was used implicitly by the computer program to estimate the degradation in specimens exposed outdoors. The paper describes a model-free heuristic approach that automatically predicts chemical degradation outdoors using the outdoor environment parameters and the SPHERE laboratory data. That both dose and dosage are equally valid methods of successfully predicting outdoor degradation may be a consequence of all the films being approximately the same thickness (about 6 µm). Langues : Américain (ame) Tags : 'Slot coating' 'Frequency response' 'Finite element method' Uniformity 'Gap disturbance' Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Slot coating is perhaps one of the most successful film manufacturing methods and is used to produce a wide variety of products. It is a pre-metered method and ideal for high-precision coating: the steady-state thickness is precisely controlled by the flow rate fed to the die and the web speed. However, the coating method is surrounded by small-scale disturbances that can destroy film thickness uniformity. Among various disturbances, a periodic change of the coating gap, the so-called gap disturbance, is considered the most dangerous in previous studies, e.g., Romero and Carvalho (Chem Eng Sci 63(8):2161–2173, 2008), Tsuda et al. (AIChE J 56(9):2268–2279, 2010), and Lee and Nam (AIChE J, 2015). However, the effects of fluid properties, operating conditions, and die configurations on the slot coating flow under gap disturbances are not examined in detail. In this study, we revisit the computer-aided analysis of transient slot coating flow designed to predict the thickness variations under gap disturbance. Extensive computational predictions reveal important parameters for suppressing film nonuniformity that can be induced by gap disturbance. Langues : Anglais (eng) Tags : Peinturage 'Coil coating' Rouleau Ecoulement 'Propriété rhéologique' Peinture Etalement Feuil Epaisseur Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The paints used in the coil-coating/roll-coating process often have a rheological behaviour of the thixotropic yieldstress type. This may be necessary in order to prevent the pigments from settling during storage. However, it has been shown that the structures responsible for this behaviour should be sufficiently fragile to be destroyed very quickly as the paint passes between two counter-rotating rolls, in spite of the brief period of time the fluid is subjected to stresses during this flow. It therefore follows that modelling the process with a view to predicting the thickness of the final coating may be based on a determination of the viscosity of the paints in a steady flow regime at 104 s−1, a result which was confirmed by coating experiments.
In contrast, the ability of a paint to level the defects that are inevitably generated on the liquid film is connected with its thixotropic properties. In order to obtain representative data, they must be measured during unsteady flow with a low rate of shear, following intense pre shearing. It has been shown that the kinetics of paint structure recovery, or recovery of viscosity, is of decisive importance. If this occurs too rapidly, a significant yield stress appears before the film is completely levelled, thus fixing the residual defects. The thixotropic properties, required to prevent sedimentation from occurring, must therefore be characterised by a sufficiently slow structure recovery time.Note de contenu : - Analysis of the oil-coating processNALYSYS OF THE OIL-COATING PROCESS

This has been due to the increased usage of prepainted steel products in the construction and domestic appliance industries and a recognition by the automotive manufacturing industry of the benefits of prepainted steels, such as Durasteel and Bonazinc. The coil coating industry is, however, under increasing pressure from environmentalists who question the manufacture, content and recyclability of prepainted steel. The major areas of concern are the levels of solvents used in current coil coating paints, the continued use of chromates in pretreatments and primers and the recyclability of halogen-containing (PVC, PVF2) prepainted steels. The European steel industry must respond positively to these environmental pressures if it wishes to maintain and expand its coil coating operations.
Radiation curing has a large potential as a future processing technology for the production of prepainted steel strip. This technology is currently widely used throughout the plastic, paper and wood-coating industries where it shows a number of environmental advantages over conventional thermal curing.Note de contenu : - PRINCIPLES OF RADIATION CURING
