RhéologieIndex. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : Processibility of LDPE is known to be sensitive to processing history. Significant changes in processibility and product properties can occur through repeated extrusion without detectable changes in molecular weight and molecular weight distribution. Such changes of LDPE rheology are simulated with DSM micro-compounder and characterized with the small angle oscillatory tests and the SER uni-axial extensional flow with a K-BKZ analysis. Both the linear and the nonlinear rheology data suggest the major mechanism in the extrusion with the DSM micro-compounder is the reduction of the effects of long chain branching. The linear rheology analysis, along with GPC and NMR characterization confirms that the changes in the extrusion are not due to chemical crosslinking, though an increase in backbone molecular weight at extreme conditions is perceivable through the minor increase in molecular weight distribution, the increase in zero-shear viscosity and the decrease of melt index. The extensional rheology results, on the other hand, reveal the depression of the strain hardening with prolonged extrusion at 190 degree C or higher extrusion temperature. The stress growth data were evaluated with a K-BKZ constitutive with exponential damping function. The depression of strain hardening is well characterized with the strain hardening factor and the non-linear exponent beta as function of the extrusion conditions. The damping factor β is observed to be especially effective as the parameter to follow the depression of the strain hardening due to microcompounder extrusion. The microcompounder extrusion and the SER analysis with the KBKZ analysis prove to be a new useful tool for simulating the shear modification of the LDPE. Matières plastiques -- Extrusion:Polymères -- Extrusion
Polymères -- DétériorationIndex. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : Polymer degradation in the extrusion process decreases quality and productivity. For this reason, it is necessary to prevent polymer degradation. In the extrusion process, polymer degradation is caused by oxidation. It depends on the processing temperature and the amount of dissolved oxygen in the molten polymer. Therefore, a quantitative analysis of these factors is required.
As for the degradation characteristics of the material used in this study, temperature and oxygen concentration dependency of the oxidation rate could be quantitatively characterized with an apparatus to evaluate polymer degradation which utilized chemiluminescence generated by an oxidation reaction. Moreover, an online measuring apparatus to analyze dissolved gas in the extruded molten polymer was developed. With this apparatus, the volume ratio of dissolved gases (N2, O2 etc.) to the extruded molten polymer could be quantitatively analyzed and the quality of the extruded molten polymer evaluated.
With this apparatus, dissolved nitrogen (an index of entrained air) was analyzed with a full-flight screw and a barrier screw. Furthermore, observation of cross sectional views in the screw channel obtained from the cooling experiment under the operating conditions was carried out for the full-flight screw and the barrier screw. With the full-flight screw, break up phenomenon (collapse of solid polymer) occurred in the screw channel and the amount of nitrogen increased. With the barrier screw, the amount of nitrogen decreased because of prevention of the break up phenomenon in the screw channel.
Consequently, it is shown that the use of the barrier screw is suitable for oxygen reduction in the molten polymer, which is a factor in causing polymer degradation.DOI : 10.3139/217.0092 En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1QAWMdNQU0jcOmKDuPGX9UubeDi2FhIV0/view?usp=drive [...]

Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : Fibers and films - When polymer fibers are manufactured by melt spinning, axial velocity is nearly uniform across any cross section but temperature and stress vary significantly across the fiber radius. Thus, the fiber solidifies from the outside in, with the fiber being solid on the outside but molten on the inside for some distance before complete solidification, and stress near solidification, the controller of mechanical properties of the spun fiber, has radial variation. We present a computationally 1D melt spinning model which recognizes the radially inhomogeneous solidification region, and computes axial and radial dependence of stress in the spinline. With this radial resolution, stress near solidification is now the stress evaluated on a surface near the solidification boundary. In simulations of melt spinning processes, we investigate features of the solidification boundary and stress near solidification, and examine how these change as material properties and process conditions change. As part of this study, we propose and investigate a solidification criterion that is a function of both stress and temperature. Note de contenu : - Model for the molten part of the spinline
