Nickel - an alternative / Tony Hart in POLYMERS PAINT COLOUR JOURNAL - PPCJ, Vol. 194, N° 4473 (02/2004)
[article]
Pigments métalliquesIndex. décimale : 667.2 Colorants et pigments Résumé : It is worth considering nickel and nickel based pigments says the author.
Metallic pigments have, for a number of decades, provided an essential tool in the hand of the formulators and manufacturers of organic based coatings. A number of different metals and alloys have been used for this type of application including aluminium, silver, gold, copper, bronze, stainless steel and nickel. Since many applications of organic-based metallic coatings are ones that depend on their decorative properties, the pigments are most usually employed in the form of flakes of varying sizes and thicknesses.
The inherent visual properties of the various types of metallic pigments generally determine the applications in which they are used. For example, aluminium flakes exhibit an extremely high level of reflectivity and have a very 'white' hue which makes them ideal for many applications where very bright coatings are required. Copper and bronze flakes however, which are available in a very wide range of colour shades, are extensively used in printing inks to simulate a 'gold' or 'gilt' appearence. Other types of flake pigment may be specified on the basis of properties other than just appearance, such as resistance to corrosion or chemical attack. For example, stainless steel flakes, whilst not showing such high level of brightness as aluminium, are frequently used in situations in which their excellent durability in aggressive environments is essential.Note de contenu : - Versatility

Langues : Anglais (eng) Tags : Trame 'Fils de chaine' Segmentation teints multicolores' Imagerie Index. décimale : 667.2 Colorants et pigments Résumé : This paper proposes a novel method for segmentation of weft and warp yarns in multicolour yarn-dyed fabric images. A multicolour yarn-dyed fabric is cross-woven by weft and warp yarns with different colours. When a multispectral imaging system is used to measure the colour of a multicolour yarn-dyed fabric image, its weft and warp yarns need to be detected before analysing their colours. Detection of interstices between weft and warp yarns is firstly conducted. A modified K-means clustering approach is then utilised to separate weft and warp yarns. The number of clusters is fixed to 2. The metric to measure the distance between a pixel and the mean of a cluster is the CIELAB colour difference. The initial means are determined by the expected values of fitted Gaussian distributions to CIExyY colour histograms. Experimental results show that the proposed method is promising for the segmentation of weft and warp yarns in multicolour yarn-dyed fabrics, with an improved segmentation accuracy and much faster processing speed than K-means clustering in CIEXYZ and CIELAB spaces. PigmentsIndex. décimale : 667.2 Colorants et pigments Résumé : The author explains why diffractive light technology is used instead of thin film interference to produce a new family of pigments. Basic concepts of diffraction grating theory, together with principles of platelet-like pigments, where taken into consideration when creating of this new family of pigments. The optical properties of these pigments are based on optical interference by diffraction instead of thin film optical interference used on traditional optical variable pigments. By controlling the physical dimensions and surface microstructure, diffractive pigment generates the appearance of multiple, bright rainbow-producing prisms moving over a liquid silver colour. The effect is pleasing, elegant and exhibits dramatic visual appeal that is unique, durable and easy to incorporate. Diffractive pigment opens new worlds of design possibilities and adds value and appeal to virtually any product. Note de contenu : - Light interference

(Wikipedia)

Sondes fluorescentesIndex. décimale : 667.2 Colorants et pigments Résumé : A new coumarin derivative containing both imine bond and amide moiety was synthesised. It was used as a reaction-based pH probe and was sensitive to pH changes in the intervals 1.50–4.10 and 10.20–12.86. In the pH range 1.50–4.10, the ultraviolet-visible (UV‒vis) absorption band of the probe gradually shifted from 353 nm to 340 nm with decrease in the pH value. The colour changed from pale yellow fluorescence at pH 4.10 to blue fluorescence at pH 1.50. Meanwhile the fluorescence emission band at 501 nm gradually shifted to 560 nm accompanying a gradual enhancing in the emission intensity. This pH response is caused by the hydrolysis of the imine bond in the probe under acidic conditions (pH 1.50–4.10). The colourless probe solution turned yellow at pH range 10.20–12.86. Bathochromic shift of the fluorescence band from 501 nm gradually to 550 nm was observed with the increase of pH value from 10.20 to 12.86 accompanying a gradual enhancement of the fluorescence emission intensity, indicating that the new compound serves as a fluorescent pH probe at pH range 10.20–12.86 through a deprotonation process. Under strongly alkaline conditions with pH larger than 12.86, hydrolysis of the lactone structure in the probe occurred to produce non-fluorescent species.
