Accelerated corrosion protection tests in INTERNATIONAL SURFACE TECHNOLOGY (IST), N° 2/2010 (2010)
[article]

A suitable binder is necessary to give a high quality paint. Experiments on masonry paints in the PVC range of 35 to 55% show that after many years of outdoor exposure no significant difference between straight acrylic and acrylic/styrene copolymers can be found. More important is the optimisation of the pigment volume concentration and the pigment/extender combination than the type of the binder. Note de contenu : - Various acrylic copolymer dispersions with similar particle size
- Paint formulations
- Water is the main source of damage a coating
- Neutralisation of binders with NaOH gives better WA and WVTR results
- Outdoor weathering results
- Colour changes due to outdoor exposure
- Yellowing of acrylic based paints is not better than acrylic/styrene
- Chalking due to out door exposure

Sound, solid wood can last for centuries. Nevertheless, wood is susceptible to biological and physical degradation. Therefore it needs to be protected properly, all the more when using less durable species. A variety of finishes can be applied. These coatings must meet certain minimum requirements, among which are sufficient penetration, resistance to physical and biological discoloration, and good adhesion. The last is considered the utmost important factor for the overall performance of a coating. Without an adequate anchoring to the wood, the coating will peel off prematurely and, thus, affect the lifetime of the substrate. In this article, the impact of the type of coating used, the wood species, and preweathering of the wood on adhesion are disclosed. In addition, the effect of weathering on the wood-coating system as a whole is looked at as well. The adhesion measurements were obtained with a mechanical torque device developed at VTT in Finland. Revêtements en phase aqueuse:Peinture en phase aqueuseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Using a modified torque technique, statistically significant differences in adhesion values were detected for waterborne model paints on wood as a function of moisture content, waterborne preservative, and after fungal inoculation. Change in a paint constituent sometimes resulted in a significant change in the adhesion value. The adhesion values of the alkyd emulsion paints tested decreased after inoculation with a blue stain fungus. On the contrary, the adhesion values of the acrylic dispersion paints tested became significantly higher after inoculation. Note de contenu : - Painted wood samples
