Revêtements protecteursIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Intumescent fire-retardant coatings are widely applied as they combine designable aesthetics and fire protection without compromising substrate properties. When exposed to heat, intumescent fire-retardant coatings expand and build an insulating char. This study presents an investigation of the char by addition of kaolinite, barite, and titania as functional fillers in intumescent coatings. Expansion experiments at 400°C with custom build image analysis showed that kaolinite inhibited (0.03 mm/s, expansion factor ≈ 7), whereas barite acted synergistically on the expansion ability (0.59 mm/s, expansion factor ≈ 85). The resulting char density and the visual inspection showed that barite char was less compact, with cracks and voids. Evaluation of fire performance by single burning item tests resulted in Euroclass C for the barite system and Euroclass A2/B for the titania system. Post-heating chars demonstrated poor thermostability of barite char, and subsequent FTIR spectroscopy revealed that titania char formed the thermostable titanium pyrophosphate. Further inspection of the titania char revealed a uniform closed cell structure with mean bubble sizes of 26–56 µm. Titania coating expands rapidly (0.37 mm/s, expansion factor ≈ 60) and forms a structurally stable tumescent char with a compact and uniform porous structure exhibiting resistance to char oxidation at sustained heating. vision des couleursIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The addition of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 nanoparticles) to a water-based varnish used for finishing tropical woods was studied. Three different concentrations of TiO2 nanoparticles (0%, 1.0%, and 1.5%) were evaluated. The nanoparticles were characterized by means of the transmission electron microscopy and an X-ray diffractometer. The varnish prepared was evaluated for its viscosity, adhesion of the film to the wood, water absorption, and the effects of natural weathering on the color and quality of the varnish. It was found that viscosity decreases as the concentration of TiO2 nanoparticles increases, while no variation was found in the thickness of the film. Except for Gmelina arborea and Tectona grandis, the adhesion was not statistically affected. It was found that, in the 9 species tested, incorporation of TiO2 nanoparticles decreased the values of water absorption. The evaluation of natural weathering showed that the varnish with no added TiO2 nanoparticles degraded completely after 1 year of weathering exposure, while the modified varnish film endured. Less color change was observed in lumber treated with the varnish containing TiO2 nanoparticles. The best performance of the varnish in the nine tropical woods used was observed when TiO2 nanoparticles were added at 1.5% concentration. C’est un métal pauvre, malléable, de couleur argent, qui est remarquable pour sa résistance à l’oxydation13 et sa faible densité. C'est le métal le plus abondant de l'écorce terrestre et le troisième élément le plus abondant après l'oxygène et le silicium ; il représente en moyenne 8 % de la masse des matériaux de la surface solide de notre planète. L'aluminium est trop réactif pour exister à l'état natif dans le milieu naturel : on le trouve au contraire sous forme combinée dans plus de 270 minéraux différents, son minerai principal étant la bauxite, où il est présent sous forme d’oxyde hydraté dont on extrait l’alumine. Il peut aussi être extrait de la néphéline, de la leucite, de la sillimanite, de l'andalousite et de la muscovite.
L'aluminium métallique est très oxydable, mais est immédiatement passivé par une fine couche d'alumine Al2O3 imperméable de quelques micromètres d'épaisseur qui protège la masse métallique de la corrosion. On parle de protection cinétique, par opposition à une protection thermodynamique, car l’aluminium reste en tout état de cause très sensible à l'oxydation. Cette résistance à la corrosion et sa remarquable légèreté en ont fait un matériau très utilisé industriellement.
L'aluminium est un produit industriel important, sous forme pure ou alliée, notamment dans l'aéronautique, les transports et la construction. Sa nature réactive en fait également un catalyseur et un additif dans l'industrie chimique ; il est ainsi utilisé pour accroître la puissance explosive du nitrate d'ammonium.

Produits antisolairesIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : OBJECTIF : L'objectif de cette recherche était de déterminer la taille, la forme et l'agrégation des particules de dioxyde de titane (TiO2) qui sont utilisées dans les crèmes solaires bloquant les UV.
METHODES : Six écrans solaires provenant de divers fournisseurs et deux substances de référence ont été analysés par microscopie électronique (EM) en combinaison avec la spectroscopie à dispersion d’énergie des rayons X (EDS). En raison d'une teneur en matières grasses riches dans les crèmes solaires, il était impossible de visualiser les particules TiO2 sans préparation préalable des échantillons de EM. Différentes méthodes de dégraissage pour le TiO2 des écrans solaires ont été testées. Une méthode nouvelle de préparation d’échantillon a été développée qui a permis de caractériser les TiO2-particules à l'aide d’EM et d’EDS.
RESULTATS : Les agrégats de dioxyde de titane ayant la taille des particules primaires variant entre 15 et 40 nm ont été observés seulement dans cinq produits. Dans la crème solaire avec le plus haut SPF seulement quelques petits agrégats ont été trouvés. Dans l’écran solaire avec le SPF le plus bas les plus grands agrégats de TiO2-particules ont été détectés avec des tailles allant jusqu’à 1.6 µm. Dans l'une des lotions ni TiO2 ni ZnO n'ont été trouvé en dépit de l’étiquetage. Par contre, des particules en forme de diamant d'environ 500 nm ont été observées. Ces particules sont composées d'un matériau organique puisque seulement du carbone a été détecté par EDS.
CONCLUSION : Un procédé de délipidation nouveau pour la préparation d’échantillons de nanoparticules de dioxyde de titane utilisées dans les produits cosmétiques solaires a été développé. Cette méthode a été appliquée à six lotions solaires différentes avec FPS entre 30 et 50+. Les particules TiO2 ont été trouvées dans seulement cinq écrans solaires. Les tailles des particules primaires étaient inférieures à 100 nm et conformément à la réglementation cosmétique européenne doivent figurer sur le paquet avec le terme "nano".Note de contenu : - INTRODUCTION : Control and health's effects
