A secondary purpose is to maintain the aesthetic aspects and value of expensive good such as cars, trucks and aeroplanes. The cost of corrosion runs to approximately 3-4 % of GDP on an annual basis and therefore has an global economic impact of around US$3.3 billion. Spectroscopie d'impédance électrochimiqueIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Two coating systems were investigated under QUV-340®/Prohesion (ultraviolet/salt fog) alternating exposure. One coating was a conventional primer high-gloss (HG) polyurethane topcoat, and the other was a single ‘self-priming’ (SP) polyurethane coating. Both coating surfaces oxidised from the exposure, but the coating bulk remained intact. Cracks developed in the ‘self-priming’ coating surface, but it remained adhering. The other topcoat showed good weathering resistance, but its primer lost adhesion after exposure. Both coatings initially developed nanoblisters, then increasing surface roughness. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) showed similar corrosion-protective properties during much of the exposure. Evidently, electrochemical measurements alone are not sufficient to monitor deterioration in corrosion-protective coatings. Note de contenu : - Sample preparations

Résistance aux conditions climatiquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : To meet the requirement of improved durability of alkyd resin for use in weatherwork paint for superstructure of ships, an attempt has been made to chemically modify a castor oil alkyd by graft copolymerization with methyl methacrylate and butyl methacrylate in view of their ability to provide polymers with good exterior durability. Characterization of the experimental resins, in respect to physical properties, was carried out using instruments such as a vapor pressure osmometer, rotational viscometer, universal tensile testing instrument (Instron 1123), and differential scanning calorimeter. Performance of the resins was evaluated using a fluorescent UV accelerated weatherometer and multi-head glossmeter. The results reveal substantial improvement in drying and weather resistance properties of castor oil alkyd on graft copolymerization with both methyl methacrylate and butyl methacrylate. The improvement in these properties is marginally superior in the case of MMA grafted alkyds. MMA modification also enhances the mechanical properties of the grafted castor oil alkyd. Revêtements organiquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Reducing the repainting frequency of exterior coatings is a wish for most building owners, therefore, there is a continuous effort to develop longer lasting paints. A new family of pure acrylic binders has been designed to associate on to mineral particles present in a peint formulation, in particular Ti02 but also extenders, to space them optimally and offer a homogeneous peint film with superior exterior durability. Naturel exposure data in different climatic conditions confirm the benefits of this new binder technology, showing superior cheik resistance, gloss and colour retention and efflorescence resistance. The adsorption of these newly designed acrylic binders on to Ti02 pigment results, as well in a boost in hiding, which allows the paint formulator to reduce the pigment level and improve the sustainability profile of the paints. Revêtements organiquesIndex. décimale : 667.6 Peintures Résumé : Solvent-based emulsion paints are still the state of the art for many coating applications. However, interest continues to grow in binders that permit the formulation of solvent-free emulsion based paint systems. This requirement can be met by selecting polymer dispersions with an appropriate minimum film-forming temperature (MFFT). Therefore, the similarities and differences between pure (or straight) acrylic (Ak) and acrylic/styrene (Ak/S) dispersions with different MFFTs will be discussed In the following. Other variables that we considered are the pigment volume concentration (PVC in the range of 46 to 68%), the grade of titanium dioxide pigment and the composition of the extenders used in the formulation. - Hydrophobic binder supports film formation at 5°C
