Although sunscreen is a popular form of protection for some of these conditions, it is unclear whether sunscreen can maintain the mechanical barrier properties of skin. The objective of this study was to determine whether in vitro thin-film mechanical analysis techniques adapted for biological tissue are able to characterize the efficacy of commonly used UV inhibitors and commercial sunscreens to protect the biomechanical barrier properties of stratum corneum (SC) from UV exposure.
METHODS : The biomechanical properties of SC samples were as sayed through measurements of the SC's drying stress profile and delamination energy. The drying stresses within SC were characterized from the curvature of a borosilicate glass substrate onto which SC had been adhered. Delamination energies were characterized using a double-cantilever beam (DCB) cohesion testing method. Successive DCB specimens were prepared from previously separated specimens by adhering new substrates onto each side of the already tested specimen to probe delamination energies deeper into the SC. These properties of the SC were measured before and after UV exposure, both with and without sunscreens applied, to determine the role of sunscreen in preserving the barrier function of SC.
RESULTS : The drying stress in SC starts increasing sooner and rises to a higher plateau stress value after UVA exposure as compared to non-UV-exposed control specimens. For specimens that had sunscreen applied, the UVA-exposed and non-UV-exposed SC had similar drying stress profiles. Additionally, specimens exposed to UVB without protection from sunscreen exhibited significantly lower delamination energies than non-UV-exposed controls. With commercial sunscreen applied, the delamination energy for UV-exposed and non-UV-exposed tissue was consistent, even up to large doses of UVB.
CONCLUSION : In vitro thin-film mechanical analysis techniques can readily characterize the effects of SC's exposure to UV radiation. The methods used in this study demonstrated commercial sunscreens were able to preserve the biomechanical properties of SC during UV exposure, thus indicating the barrier function of SC was also maintained.Note de contenu : - Stratum corneum preparation

Accordingly, we aimed to characterize skin of African descent (African American skin) versus Caucasian skin through biophysical and clinical investigations. Additionally, clinical changes in some skin features as a function of age are reported.
In a first study, in vivo biophysical experiments were performed on the skin of 130 African American and 80 Caucasian women aged 18 to 87 living in the U.S. They included determination of the skin microrelief, color and color evenness, sebaceous function, surface hydration, mechanical properties, and skin structures (epidermis, subepidermal non-echogenic band, dermal epidermal junction, papillary-dermis and dermis). A second study involved a larger cohort of 200 African American and Caucasian women, aged 18-87, who were split into twelve matched 5-year age groups, in order to record age-related changes. Standardized photographs of the face were taken, focusing on various skin features. These included eye bags, under eye wrinkles, crow's feet.
These studies revealed that most of these skin features are common to both the Caucasian and African American populations. Nevertheless, some features were more prominent in or specific to the African American population including
• thicker epidermis and dermal-epidermal junction,
• thicker papillary dermis,
• stronger mechanical properties,
• specific clinical signs such as less depth of vertical upper lip wrinkles and
• more hyperpigmetation as well as pig mentary growths.
Moreover, clinical results showed that expression lines and tissue sagging appear at a later age in this population.
In addition, African American and Caucasian atlases were developed that can be used as an objective tool to evaluate product effectiveness, compare as well as identify the best products, and support efficacy claims.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Study 1 - Biophysical measurements - Color heterogeneity - Sebaceous function - Thickness of the dermal-epidermal junction and epidermis - Study 2 - Clinical

Ressources renouvelablesIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : Consumer wishes change based on a growing consciousness for the environment and people. Also, regulations change and evolve due to current and updated scientific findings. This also affects the range of commonly used UV filters. As an industry, we develop products that address these trends and meet those requirements. Consequently, we must find innovative ways to develop and optimize sunscreen products where SPF boosters play an important role.
SPF boosters shall increase the value of SPF and preferably UVA-PF and allow to reach higher sun protection factors with the same amount of UV filters. These products are not considered as UV filters because they, alone, do not significantly contribute to SPF or UVA. But they can help sunscreen formulators to answer the demands for high SPF products while considering a limited choice of UV filters.
In the pursuit of developing a SPF booster based on renewable and biodegradable raw materials we have evaluated potential candidates for their efficacy. These were incorporated in sunscreen preparations and compared to a placebo formulation without SPF booster, starting with in-vitro measurements of the UV absorbance based on ISO 24443:2021, followed by evaluation of the impact of the SPF booster concentration. The most promising candidates were further tested on their performance in water-in-oil as well as oil-in-water emulsion systems and with mineral and organic UV filters according to the different in-vivo methods ISO 24444:2019, FDA monograph standard 21CFR201.327 and hybrid diffuse reflectance spectroscopy.
To extend the set of data the influence of UVA and UVB absorbance was examined as well as the impact on the sensorial profile when adding a SPF booster to an already existing formulation.
Showing outstanding efficacy in in-vitro and in-vivo evaluations of the sunscreen protective properties the wax blend SymEffectâ„¢ UV performs in different emulsion systems and works with a variety of UV filter combinations to boost the SPF. Additionally, the balance between UVA and UVB absorbance of the initial sunscreen formulations is kept on the same level when including the wax blend, and the final sensory profile is comparable to the placebo formulations.Note de contenu : - Materials and methods
