Spectroscopie d'impédance électrochimiqueIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A study of the weathering mechanism of innovative polyurethane powder coatings has been performed. UV-B irradiation and condensation cycle accelerated tests were carried out on two different polyurethane powder coating formulations for outdoor applications. Using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and microscope observation, it was possible to analyze the photochemical and morphological modifications. In addition, the color and gloss changes were measured. Organic coatings are often in contact with solvents in particular during cleaning actions. The chemical resistance was then studied considering the evolution of the corrosion barrier property of the coating as a function of the solvent contact time. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements were carried out. Methylethylketone (polar) and xylene (apolar) were considered as representative solvents. Due to the strong polarity, the first solvent showed a strong interaction with the hydrogen bonds between the polyurethane chains causing the solvent uptake. The amount of solvent uptake depends on the coating chains rigidity caused by the different polyester resin monomers. The apolar xylene presented no significant interaction with the coatings. Revêtements protecteursIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Industries that work with acidic chemicals in their processes need to make choices on how to properly contain the substances and avoid rapid corrosion of equipment. Certain organic coatings and linings can be used in such environments, either to protect vulnerable construction materials, or, in combination with fiber reinforcement, to replace them. However, degradation mechanisms of organic coatings in acid service are not thoroughly understood and relevant quantitative investigations are scarce. This review describes the uses and limitations of acid-resistant coatings in the chemical industry, with a comparison to alternative resistant materials based on metals or ceramics. In addition, coating degradation phenomena, caused by acid exposure, are mapped to the extent possible, and analysis methods for detecting coating degradation type and severity are listed and discussed. It is concluded that more knowledge on chemical and physical degradation mechanisms is required, and that improvements in resistance to elevated temperatures and abrasion would decrease the risk of use and increase the potential application areas of organic coatings exposed to acidic environments in the chemical industry. Revêtements en phase aqueuse:Peinture en phase aqueuseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Wood is a renewable material that has been recognized for a long time as a valuable material for construction and engineering. Sound, solid wood can last for centuries. Nevertheless, wood is susceptible to biological and physical degradation. Therefore it needs to be protected properly, all the more when using less durable species. A variety of finishes can be applied. These coatings must meet certain minimum requirements, among which are sufficient penetration, resistance to physical and biological discoloration, and good adhesion. The last is considered the utmost important factor for the overall performance of a coating. Without an adequate anchoring to the wood, the coating will peel off prematurely and, thus, affect the lifetime of the substrate. In this article, the impact of the type of coating used, the wood species, and preweathering of the wood on adhesion are disclosed. In addition, the effect of weathering on the wood-coating system as a whole is looked at as well. The adhesion measurements were obtained with a mechanical torque device developed at VTT in Finland.
