In particular, the effect of ground tire rubber (GTR) and coupling agent (maleated polyethylene, MAPE) content was studied to modify the mechanical properties of these natural fiber composites (NFC). From the samples produced, a complete characterization was performed including morphology, density, hardness, as well as mechanical properties in tension, flexion, and impact. The results indicate that substantial improvement in NFC impact strength occurred after GTR addition, while tensile and flexural moduli/strengths decreased. On the other hand, the addition of a coupling agent was able to improve adhesion between each phase resulting in better composite properties. Overall, the final properties of the composites represent a balance between elasticity/toughness from GTR and rigidity/strength from hemp and MAPE. From the data obtained, a regression model for different properties is presented to design/control the final properties of these composites. Note de contenu : - MATERIALS

Microscopie électronique à balayageIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : The use of natural fiber reinforced composites gains attention due to its weight and reasonable strength in the recent years. Generally, the mechanical performance of the hybrid composites are superior than the mono fiber reinforced composites. In this work, two different types of natural fibers, namely hemp and palmyra fibers, are selected as reinforcement materials for the development of unidirectional fiber reinforced hybrid composites. Composite laminate was fabricated with four different weight percentages (10 wt.%, 20 wt.%, 30 wt.% and 40 wt.%) and three different hybrid ratios (1:1, 1:2, and 2:1) of hemp and palmyra. The influence of fiber percentage and stacking sequence on the mechanical performance such as tensile strength, flexural strength, impact energy, and hardness of the hybrid composites was evaluated. From the results, it was observed that the adding 30 wt. % of hemp and palmyra fiber can increase the tensile strength and flexural strength by a percentage of 112% and 241% respectively. The impact energy absorption and the hardness of the hybrid composites are examined and compared. The experimental results shows that the hybrid composites containing high fiber weight percentage contribute to significant increase in impact energy and hardness. Morphological analysis is done using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Materials - Composite preparation Physical and mechanical testing of hybrid composites

Traction (mécanique)Index. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : We prepared banana fiber (BF)/poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) composites using hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) as a compatibilizer. BF was treated with NaOH aqueous solution (BF-A). Both BF/PBS/HDI and BF-A/PBS/HDI composites were made by applying a batch type twin-kneader at 130 °C. Dumbbell specimens were prepared by an injection molding machine at 130 °C. Effect of concentration of NaOH aq on tensile strength and impact strength, effect of amount of HDI on tensile strength and Izod impact strength, and effect of mixing time on tensile strength and Izod impact strength of BF/PBS/HDI and BF-A/PBS/HDI composites were studied. When contents of HDI in composites were increased, tensile strength increased. In addition, when mixing times were increased, tensile strength increased. Although the mechanical properties of PBS were first degraded with the addition of BF, alkaline treatment to BF and the addition of HDI improved the mechanical properties. This probably due to the promotion of the adhesion between BF and PBS. The surface morphology of the fracture surfaces of the composites were observed with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). It shows that higher mechanical properties can be expected from compatibilized composites based on BF-As with aliphatic polyesters. Traction (mécanique)Index. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Injection molded composites are becoming more widespread in recent years because of their high quality and low cost. However, compared to synthetic fiber composites, it is difficult to maintain a constant fiber volume fraction and uniform distribution for natural fiber composites during the direct injection process. This is mainly because natural fibers are more easily twisted during feeding into the injection machine, owing to their rough surfaces. These feeding difficulties are particularly due to the low bulk densities of natural fibers, especially natural fillers. Additional challenges to the injection process include the concentration and, especially for natural filler reinforced composite. To address these problems, the current study investigates the mechanical properties and morphologies of polypropylene (PP) reinforced by wood powder. Two pre-molding processes, dry-blending and compounding, were compared, and the effects of an additive (crystalline polyalpha olefin (CPAO)) on the mechanical properties of the wood/PP composites were investigated. This investigation is based on tensile, three point bending, and Izod impact tests, and scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation of the fracture surfaces. Results indicated that the composites molded through compounding exhibited better mechanical properties than the samples molded through the direct dry-blending process. In addition, the tensile and bending properties of the composites produced through compounding were found to increase with the addition of CPAO content, because of improved wood powder distribution in the PP matrix. PolypropylèneIndex. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : Low density, easy of availability, less abrasive and biodegradable nature of lignocellulosic materials emphasized their usage for development of thermoplastic composites based on Rice Husk and Polypropylene (RHPP). Mechanical properties of RHPP composites such as tensile, impact strength decreases by the addition of rice husk, preheating of rice husk and its proper size is essential for its effective use as filler in polypropylene composites. Improvement in tensile, impact, hardness and abrasion resistance is possible by adding compatibiliser and reduction of cooling time. Impact strength of the composite increase with temperature, optimum temperature for obtaining good tensile, hardness and abrasion is 200°C. RHPP Composites thus prepared have potential for applications in building and automobile industries.
