Abrasion is a function of concentration, hardness and particle size of the material and/or impurity. A mineral with a high concentration of a hard impurity is not necessarily more abrasive. It is also highly dependent on the particle size of the impurity. Note de contenu : - GCC and abrasivity

RechercheIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Early microscopy techniques, such as optical, or the former electronic microscopy techniques, were widely utilised in leather research, mainly as an initial approach, or as additional tool to obtain useful information. Throughout the ages, the developments reached in microscopy technologies have allowed their utilisation as the main, determining tool to get results in many research fields.12
The modern scanning electron microscopy (SEM) technique that we have utilized in leather research, was equipped with an X-ray probe for the microanalysis of the samples and has resulted in being the most required, versatile tool in many applications: hair characterisation, characterisation of micro¬organisms involved in leather damage, investigations on leather defects and their causes, finishing characterisation, surface treatment studies, diagnostic investigations of historic leathers for their value and conservation.
ln the majority of these applications a very small portion of sample was available for the analysis. In spite of this, the technique gave.comprehensive results and was able to solve the most problematic cases of leather damage that we investigated. Particularly, SEM rnicroanalysis is considered to be 'non-destructive' indeed, as X-rays generated by electron interactions do not lead to volume loss of the sample, so it is possible to analyze the same materials repeatedly.
The study provided much interesting feedback, reinforcing our knowledge on all the topics dealt with.Note de contenu : - Morphological studies

Surfaces -- AnalyseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Surface properties of a polymeric coating system have a strong influence on its performance and service life. However, the surface of a polymer coating may have different chemical, physical, and mechanical properties from the bulk. In order to monitor the coating property changes with environmental exposures from the early stages of degradation, nondestructive techniques with the ability to characterize surface properties with micro- to nanoscale spatial resolution are required. In this article, atomic force microscopy has been applied to study surface microstructure and morphological changes during degradation in polymer coatings. Additionally, the use of AFM with a controlled tip-sample environment to study nanochemical heterogeneity and the application of nanoindentation to characterize mechanical properties of coatings surfaces are demonstrated. The results obtained from these nanometer characterization techniques will provide a better understanding of the degradation mechanisms and a fundamental basis for predicting the service life of polymer coatings.

Textiles et tissusIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The aim of this study was to prepare insect repellent textiles and compare the application methods. Bio-based insect repellent agent citronella oil was encapsulated with ethyl cellulose shell with coacervation method. Morphological assessment showed that capsules had smooth surfaces and their shape was spherical. The homogenous size distribution of the capsules was supported and the mean particle size of the optimum formulations was almost 50 μm. Outdoor upholstery fabrics were treated with citronella capsules by coating and printing to compare the application methods. After application, the insecticide effects of the fabrics were investigated and compared with the impregnation method. Insecticide activity was evaluated against common house mosquitoes (Culex pipiens), with respect to cone bioassay of World Health Organization. Mosquitoes tended to stay away from treated fabrics, and mortality rates of mosquitos were noted as 72, 65 and 55% for printing, coating and impregnation, respectively, and the fabrics still showed repellency after five washing cycles. This study showed that the developed product might be used as an alternative to the other products in the market for avoiding mosquito-borne diseases and these results showed that capsules can be transferred by printing and coating processes when compared with the impregnation method.
