StaphylocoquesIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : Objective : Washing the hands using cleansers with antiseptic materials is the most popular method for hand hygiene and helps maintain health by preventing food poisoning and bacterial infections. However, repeated hand washing tends to induce eczema of the hand, such as dryness, cracking and erythema. Moreover, eczema on the hand leads to increased levels in Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) on the skin surface in contrast to expectations. Thus, mild hand cleansers which induce less eczema even with repeated washings are desired. Here, we evaluated the efficacy of a hand cleanser formulated with alkyl ether sulphate (AES), alkyl ether carboxylic acid (AEC) and alkyl glucoside (AG) that contains isopropyl methylphenol (IPMP) on skin symptoms and S. aureus levels.
Methods : Eczema of the hand and the presence of S. aureus on the skin surface were analysed prior to and following 4 weeks of usage of the hand cleanser. A soap-based hand cleanser with IPMP was used as a reference cleanser. Eczema and cutaneous conditions were evaluated by visual grading, transepidermal water loss (TEWL), stratum corneum moisture-retention ability (MRA) and skin surface pH.
Results : The repeated use of the soap-based hand cleanser significantly worsened the hand dryness, scaling and cracks on the tips of the fingers and significantly increased the TEWL and decreased the MRA. In contrast, usage of the test cleanser only induced a significant increase in skin dryness but did not induce skin scaling or cracking and did not increase TEWL or decrease the MRA. Corresponding to these changes in skin symptoms, the presence of S. aureus increased the following use of the reference cleanser but not the test cleanser. There was no significant difference in skin surface pH between the two cleansers. Moreover, the increase in S. aureus was significantly correlated to the worsening of skin dryness and scaling.
Conclusion : These results suggest that not only antimicrobial activity but also the mildness, which minimizes cutaneous effects, are important for hand cleansers to prevent the growth of S. aureus. The cleanser formulated with AES, AEC and AG containing IPMP is mild and is effective to promote hand hygiene.DOI : 10.1111/ics.12325 En ligne : http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/ics.12325 Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=27537

These preparations adhere to the surface and are removed only by the combination of mechanics and solvents. Thus, the ingredients are applied locally targeted and distributed evenly over time, which spares material as well as resources and leads to a superior stain removal. The solubility and viscosity of the system is adjustable by small changes within the formulation. Since the hydrophobic gels are chemically inert, almost all active ingredients like surfactants, bleaches, acids, bases, enzymes or solvents can be incorporated in high concentrations. In particular, incompatibilities between cleaning agents may be avoided. For instance, a low pH value can be locally stabilized in alkaline washing liquors in order to remove acid-sensitive soiling. SurfactantsIndex. décimale : 668.1 Agents tensioactifs : savons, détergents Résumé : Beyond their solubilizing property, multifunctional hydrotropes or co-surfactants provide additional value to cleaning formulations. The added value of these multifunctional hydrotropes derives from the synergy with primary surfactants due to low application concentrations, foam control, compatibility with high alkalinity/electrolyte content, reduced environmental impact, low environmental and human toxicity. The product portfolio of AkzoNobel Surface Chemistry includes several classes of multifunctional hydrotropes, such as cationic and amphoteric surfactants, alkyl glucosides and alkyl amide ethoxylates. RhéologieIndex. décimale : 668.1 Agents tensioactifs : savons, détergents Résumé : We present an innovative, natural and readily biodegradable suspension agent that opens new possibilities to homecare formulators. When added to detergent formulas, it brings a very powerful suspension capacity without any perceivable impact on viscosity. The agent is based on activated cellulose fibers obtained through the fermentation of starch using specific bacterial strains. We present rheology measurements that allow us to predict the suspension power of a detergent formula supplemented with the agent, based on its rheology at low shear rates. The yield stress value extracted from Bingham plots highly correlates with the density and size of the objects that can be suspended with the agent. We show the application of the agent in multiple home care formulations, in particular the suspension of decorative visual beads and concentrated fragrance in a typical liquid laundry formula. We describe how it is simple to add the suspension agent to a formula due to its pre-activated liquid format. A formula supplemented with the suspension agent is stable for several months at 45°C, with sustained suspension power and no demixion or change in aspect, highlighting the suitability of the suspension agent for commercial consumer products.
