ThermogravimétrieIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : The majority of native starch is used in the food sector and in the paper industry. Only a small amount is used in polymer engineering. One reason for the reluctance of the plastics processing industry to use starch as a filling material in polymer blends is the unsatisfactory mechanical behavior of starch when combined with thermoplastics. Another reason is the hydrophilicity of starch. In order to make these materials capable of competing, an amelioration of the mechanical properties is compulsory. By means of modifying the native starch and optimizing the compounding process, it is possible to improve the performance of starch blends, and, thus, increase the number of application areas of these materials. For this reason, native starch was modified with a cross-linking agent using a laboratory mixer. Subsequently, the modified starch and poly(lactic acid) were compounded using a co-rotating twin screw extruder. Cross-linking of the native starch in the laboratory mixer resulted in an increase in the mechanical strength of the starch blends. In addition, the blends with cross-linked starch displayed lower moisture absorption levels than blends with native starch as a filling material.

ZincIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The electrochemical characteristics in the degradation process of epoxy zinc-rich coating (80 wt% zinc particles) and epoxy varnish coating in 3.5% NaCl solution were studied comparatively by using open-circuit potential and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests. The coating morphology, the consumption and corrosion products of zinc particles and chemical changes in the coatings were observed and analyzed with the methods of scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The results show that the zinc-rich coating provides effective cathodic protection to the carbon steel substrate at the initial stage and still provides certain cathodic protection in the period when the barrier protection by the formation of zinc corrosion products begins to dominate. Because the zinc particles are conductive and active, the values of the coating resistance and capacitance of zinc-rich coatings are lower than those of the varnish coating. When the value of |Z|0.01Hz decreases to 8 × 104 Ω cm2, the zinc-rich coatings still provide protection to the steel substrate, but when the value decreases to about 2 × 104 Ω cm2, rusted spots were observed on the coating surface. Based on the results, a reference criterion of failure for the zinc-rich epoxy coatings is suggested to be about 5 × 104 Ω cm2 (2 × 104 – 8 × 104 Ω cm2), which is different from the one (106 Ω cm2) reported in the literature for typical organic coatings without conductive particles.

ThermogravimétrieIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : Objectives : This work aimed to design, synthesize and characterize replacement natural moisturizing factor (NMF) composed of modified hygroscopic linear amino acids to pre-empt or repair skin barrier dysfunction.
Methods : Following synthesis and characterization, thermo-gravimetric analysis and quantum mechanics molecular modelling quantified and depicted water binding to the new compounds. Deliquescence relative humidity demonstrated the water-scavenging ability of the compounds, whereas snake skin moisturizing studies showed they increased water uptake into snake skin.
Results : From thermal analysis, N-hydroxyglycine showed greatest water-holding capacity followed by N-hydroxyserine, l-homoserine and ?-hydroxyglycine; coupled with quantum mechanics molecular modelling, between 8 and 12 molecules of water could associate with each molecule of either N-hydroxyglycine, N-hydroxyserine or l-homoserine. All of our modified amino acids were efficacious and induced similar or greater water uptake compared with the established moisturizing compounds hyaluronic acid, glycerine and urea in snake skin. Incorporated at 10% in Oilatum, N-hydroxyserine induced >200% greater moisture uptake into dry snake skin compared to treatment with water alone, with efficacy related to the molecule structure and ability to bind to 12 water molecules. Oilatum cream spiked with all our unnatural amino acid hydrotropes increased water uptake into snake skin compared with Oilatum alone.
The compound series was designed to elucidate some structure – efficacy relationships. Amino acid chirality did not affect the water-holding capacity but did affect uptake into skin. Compounds with high melting points and bond energies tended to decrease water-holding capacity. With isosteric replacement, the more electronegative atoms gave greater water-holding capacities.
Conclusions : This work demonstrates the potential of unnatural amino acid hydrotropes as skin moisturizers and has developed some predictive 'rules' for further design and refinement of chemical structures.Note de contenu : - MATERIALS AND METHODS : Materials - Synthesis of modified linear amino acids - Deliquescence relative humidity - Themogravimetric analysis - (TGA) - Quantum mechanics molecular modeling (QMMM) - Snake skin moisturizing study - Statistical analysis

SouduresIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Fouling control coatings (FCCs) and irregularities (e.g., welding seams) on ship hull surfaces have significant effects on the overall drag performance of ships. In this work, skin frictions of four newly applied FCCs were compared using a pilot-scale rotary setup. Particular attention was given to the effects of coating water absorption on skin friction. Furthermore, to investigate the effects of welding seam height and density (number of welding seams per five meters of ship side) on drag resistance, a new flexible rotor was designed and used for experimentation. It was found, under the conditions selected, that a so-called fouling release (FR) coating caused approximately 5.6% less skin friction (torque) over time than traditional biocide-based antifouling (AF) coatings at a tangential speed of 12 knots. Furthermore, results of immersion experiments and supporting “standard” water absorption experiments showed that water absorption of the FR coating did not result in any significant impacts on skin friction. On the other hand, water absorption was found to actually lower the skin friction of AF coatings. This may be attributed to a smoothening of the coating surface. The effects of welding seam height and density on drag resistance were found to be substantial when welding seam height is above 5 mm, especially at high tangential speeds (above 15 knots). Using an interpolation approach, the pilot-scale welding seam drag data could be used to estimate the drag resistance at approximated full-scale conditions, equivalent to about one welding seam per five meters of ship side. It was shown, in this case, that the contribution of welding seams to ship skin friction could very well be less significant than those of FCCs when the welding seam height is below 5 mm, a representative value for full-scale welding seam height.
