Primaire (revêtement)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Silver and metallic effect finishes remain a popular choice in the coatings market. With end users and designers demanding smoother and more chrome like silver finishes, formulators can utilise vacuum metallised pigments (VMPs) to achieve the desired result. VMPs have gained wider acceptance and are used increasingly in numerous different types of coating. They are quite different from the conventional ball-milled 'cornflake' and 'silver dollar' aluminium types. Traditional aluminium pigments are generally produced from atomised aluminium using a wet milling process'. The mills operate such that the media cascades onto the aluminium powder, gradually flattening the malleable metal into flake form, using a fatty acid lubricant to aid milling.
The VMP is manufactured by vapour deposition of high-purity aluminium onto a flexible web substrate, which has previously been coated with a polymer release coating. The metallised layer is then released from the host substrate and broken down into particles of a size and distribution suitable for application in surface coatings; the pigment has a polymer surface chemistry.
VMPs are typically five to ten times thinner than those of ball-milled types. They have an exceptionally smooth surface that ensures maximum light reflection and they are not prone to the flake surface defects typical of ball-milled pigments (Table 1). The thin flake structure gives enhanced mobility within the paint formulation, allowing for improved orientation. Like all flake pigments, proper orientation is the key. Optimised orientation not only improves reflecting power, but it also contributes to significant improvement in hiding power or opacity. In general, the mirror-like effect and hiding power of VMPs increases with decreasing flake thickness.Note de contenu : - Applications and use of VMPs

Pulvérisation cathodiqueIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Cathodic Electro Deposition (CED) has been relied upon as the sole coat for corrosion resistance primer for automotive body shells since its invention in the late 1960s. Car bodies that are warranted for corrosion resistance for 12 + years often use CED as a primer with confidence.
CED is formulated with a base resin of water-based epoxy due to its excellent corrosion-resistant properties. Parts to be coated are immersed in a CED bath/tank, and CED is applied by passing a direct current across the part to be coated (cathode) and anodes installed in the bath. As deposition is driven by the flow of electrons (current), paint is deposited wherever current density is available. This enables primer to be coated on the innermost parts, corners, and crevices.
CED is popular in the automotive and industrial fields due to its effectiveness in protecting against corrosion.Note de contenu : - Latest developments in CED
