Index. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : In this study, we address heat-seal properties of poly (lactic acid) (PLA), blended with Poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT). The objective is to correlate blends crystalline structure and morphology to corresponding heat-seal of blends films. The SEM micrographs show a two-phase elongated morphology where stretched ellipsoids developed through elongational flow during the cast film process. To distinguish the effect of crystallization, we also prepared amorphous and crystalline PBAT films and then compared them to blends with PLA. Heat-sealed areas were created by putting film surfaces in intimate contact for 1 s at the pressure of 0.5 N/mm2 or Pa and in the temperature range of 70 to 140 °C. Thermal analysis shows that the crystalline structure of PBAT has a significant effect on shifting its heat-seal initiation temperature (Tsi) up to 20 °C. Regarding the blends, incorporation of PBAT as a dispersed phase lowers Tsi of blend samples. Here, gradual decrease in PBAT crystallinity caused by the hindering effect of PLA rigid molecules correlates with the shift in heat-seal initiation temperature. As mentioned above, elongated disperse morphology with higher aspect ratio of the dispersed phase compared to spherical dispersed domain, is formed through film cast process. This enhances the adhesion process by providing higher contact area. The blends also show higher toughness and better puncture resistance, which is an asset for flexible packaging applications and would enhance the mechanical performance of the seal layer.
It is generally accepted that the benefit of anisotropic nanofiller addition is strongly dependent on the state of the dispersion of these fillers in a polymer matrix. In this paper the influence of melt-compounding conditions on the dispersion of a needle-like clay, i. e. sepiolite, in poly(∊-caprolactone) (PCL) is investigated. The crystallisation behavior as well as the rheological and mechanical properties of PCL/sepiolite nanocomposites with filler contents up to 5 wt.% are studied. By changing the screw speed during melt-mixing in a micro-compounder, the state of dispersion was varied, with the higher speed leading to better dispersion and breakdown of the sepiolite agglomerates or bundles. Rheometry showed that better dispersed nanocomposites displayed an increase in viscosity due to network formation at slightly higher filler loadings. Likewise, better dispersed composites showed a modest increase in crystallisation temperature at low filler content, accompanied by a decrease in both nucleation efficiency and degree of crystallisation at higher loadings. Better dispersed nanocomposite systems also showed superior mechanical properties, particularly at higher filler loadings. However, overall the reinforcing efficiency of sepiolite in all nanocomposites was relatively low. This was mainly a consequence of the relatively low filler aspect ratio and the simultaneous breakup of sepiolite needles together with a breakdown of bundles during compounding. The results showed that liquid Sn separated when the Sn content was higher than approximately 2?% by volume because of the interfacial tension of up to 167?mN/m and the 106-fold viscosity difference between the liquid Sn and the molten polyethylene. When Sn separation did not occur, the effects of the mixing time and rotary speed on the degree of mixing and the Sn particle size were analyzed using thermogravimetric analysis and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that the effects of mixing time and rotary speed on the degree of mixing and Sn particle size can be combined as the impact of specific energy input. With increasing specific energy input, the degree of mixing initially increased and subsequently remained constant, while the Sn particle size initially decreased and subsequently remained constant. The refinement of the dispersed phase was completed with a low specific energy input, but the homogenization of the dispersed phase required a higher specific energy input to achieve completion, revealing the relationship between distributive mixing and dispersive mixing. Index. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : In this work thermoplastic materials from cellulose fatty acid esters were manufactured, their properties described and application and processing perspectives evaluated. Rheological properties of some cellulose esters in melt were studied under conditions similar to those usually used in industrial polymer processing. Thermoplastic properties of cellulose esters were compared with properties of low density polyethylene under the same conditions. It was discovered that long chain fatty acid cellulose esters could be processed in the same way as commodity polymers, but these materials need further improvement for being industrially applied as thermoplastic polymers. ViscositéIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : The corner vortex phenomenon occurring in entry flow is relevant to both polymer rheology and polymer processing. The famous viscoelastic constitutive equations in numerical computations of fluid mechanics have always had limited relevance at low apparent shear rates. However, three-dimensional (3D) simulations of viscoelastic fluids have been rarely found in advanced rheology. Recently, the GNF-X (eXtended Generalized Newtonian Fluid) constitutive equation of the weighted shear/extensional viscosity developed in advanced rheology of complex fluids has been incorporated into state-of-the-art predictive engineering tools. Thereby, 3D numerical simulations of entry flow were performed for a LDPE (low-density polyethylene) melt. As a validation, the predicted vortex streamlines are in good agreement with related experimental observations. More importantly, the simulation results show the vortex growth with respect to apparent shear rates, contraction ratios, and inlet angles. In particular for extensional viscosity, the stronger extension hardening characteristic yields a large vortex size.
