Textiles et tissusIndex. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : The technical performance of five selected commercial photochromic dyes applied by screen-printing on textiles was evaluated using a colour measurement methodology that has previously been established and validated. The results of wash fastness assessments were distinctly unusual. With the selected spirooxazine dyes, the degree of photocoloration increased with initial washing and decreased with subsequent washings, while the naphthopyrans behaved more normally, showing a consistent marginal decrease in photocoloration with repeated washing. An explanation is proposed consistent with scanning electron microscopy examination of the binder film degradation and with the structural differences between the dye classes. The dyes in this application showed limited photostability. The incorporation of ultraviolet absorbers was found to increase photostability only to an extent specific to particular ultraviolet absorber/dye combinations. However, the presence of the ultraviolet absorber led to a consistent reduction in the degree of photocoloration of the dyes. In contrast, the incorporation of hindered amine light stabilisers significantly enhanced the photostability of the dyes, providing an increase in resistance to photodegradation of up to fivefold. StatistiqueIndex. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : In recent years, wood-plastic composites (WPCs) have become among the most popular engineering materials. Most of their usage areas are outdoors, where they encounter various damaging factors. The weathering conditions cause significant deterioration to WPC surfaces, which negatively influences their service life. In this study, zinc oxide nanoparticles at different concentrations (1%, 3%, 5%, 10%) were added to a high-density polyethylene-based WPC matrix. The effect of zinc oxide nanoparticles on the weathering performance of WPC was evaluated after 840 hours of an artificial weathering test. The highest colour changes (∆E*) were monitored with control samples exposed for 840 hours. Adding zinc oxide nanoparticles improved the ultraviolet (UV) resistance and decreased the colour changes. The wood flour content also affected the colour changes on the WPC surface. A combination of 10% zinc oxide nanoparticles and 50% wood flour content provided the lowest colour changes. The barrier effect of nanoparticles protected the WPC surfaces from UV light. Zinc oxide nanoparticles also positively affected the load transfer, which restricted the reduction in mechanical properties after the weathering test. The degradation on the surface of WPCs was also investigated using attenuated total reflectance-Fourier Transform–infrared analysis. The changes in the characteristic bands of polymer and wood indicated that surface degradation was inevitable. Light and scanning electron microscopy images also demonstrated micro-cracks and roughness on the surface of WPCs. It is concluded that UV degradation is unavoidable, but zinc oxide nanoparticles can improve surface resistance against weathering conditions. Oxychlorure de bismuth

Pigments métalliques
RéflectanceIndex. décimale : 667.2 Colorants et pigments Résumé : Recent advances mean bismuth oxychloride pigment is being used for variety of purposes. This paper looks at its application in coatings.
The liquid metal look is essentially a smooth, highly reflective, non-grainy appearance. This is accomplished by using either a continuous film or by using very thin platelets, on the order of 30-50 nanometers, to reduce the scattering of light from edges of platelets. It has been desirable in the automotive industry for some time and is now making an appearance in other coating applications, such as teletronics.
This is accomplished by using either a continuous film or by using very thin platelets of a highly reflective pigment. One of the pigments that satisfy these requirements is bismuth oxychloride. This pigment has been better know for applications such as button and costume jewellery coatings, but recent advances make it feasible for less traditional applications as well, such as achieving the liquid metal effect.
Bismuth oxychloride is made by the reaction of bismuth nitrate in acid solution with chloride. By suitably controlling pH and temperature, the formation of BiOCl is thermodynamically preferred over Bi2O3, bismuth oxide. With very fine control of these same parameters the crystals grow as very thin patelets. The chemical reaction is as follows :
Bi(NO3)3 + H2O + 3NaCl --> BiOCl + 2HCl + 3NaNO3
The resulting platelets are about 90nm thick at the edge and somewhat thicker in the middle. It is the shape of these platelets, along with the index refraction (about 2.0), that is responsible for its pearlescent appearance.Note de contenu : - Bi(NO3)3 + H20 + 3NaCl -> BiOCl + 2HCl + 3NaNO3

(Wikipedia)

ThermochromieIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Thermochromic coatings are special effect coatings that change colour when the temperature changes. The colour changing function contributes to its most important benefit: bringing additional functions to routine items, such as a temperature indicating feature, food quality indicator, or authenticity verification. However, thermochromic coatings are usually sensitive to UV light or in-room light exposure. UV light would damage the thermochromic compounds and ruin the colour changing ability and hence, limit its application range. To expand the application of thermochromic coatings, solving the UV-sensitive issue is necessary. The purpose of this study was to find suitable solutions to solve the fading problems of thermochromic coatings.
Design of Experiment (DOE) method and statistical software were used to analyse the correlation of light stabiliser dosage and dry film thickness (DFT) after the QUV¬accelerated weathering test. According to the calculated results, the influence level of a novel light stabiliser (NLS) on colour difference value is 69%, while the influence level of DFT is 20%. Furthermore, we tested the protective effect of different dosages of NLS on the colour changing ability for thermochromic coatings after 72hr QUV exposure. According to our results, 3% and 5% of NLS both provide excellent protection and help the thermochromic coating to maintain its colour changing function after UV light exposure. / mATNote de contenu : - EXPERIMENT : Materials - Equipment - Methods - QUV accelerated weathering test - High temperature optical data test method
